TUM SEED Center

Technical University of Munich

Center for Sustainable Energies and Entrepreneurship and Development in Global South
“Microgrid Design and Optimization” Workshop
10th-14th of June, 2024 - Munich, Germany

Objectives
The TUM SEED Center is dedicated to facilitating high-quality academic exchanges in
sustainable energy and entrepreneurship. With a specific focus on the Global South, our center
recognizes microgrids' pivotal role as sustainable solutions to promote interconnectivity and
catalyze economic development. In this endeavor, we are pleased to announce an exciting
opportunity for fellow students eager to acquire knowledge on microgrids' planning, design, and
optimization. We aim to equip participants with the skills and insights necessary to contribute
meaningfully to advancing sustainable energy solutions and entrepreneurship in their respective
regions, fostering a brighter future for communities worldwide.

The objectives of the workshop are:

a. Provide Participants from Diverse Disciplines with an Essential Foundation in Power
Systems and Microgrid Design.
b. Emphasize Essential Design Principles and Methods for Microgrid Components.
c. Equip participants with skills in open-source optimization and microgrid simulation tools
to validate microgrid designs.

The expected outcomes of the workshop are:

a. Participants will gain the ability to design, validate, and supervise microgrid plans.
b. Acquiring basic skills in using Pandapower, an open-source tool, to simulate microgrids
and share their knowledge at their home universities.
c. Participants will become familiar with deterministic and stochastic optimization
techniques and understand their importance in robust microgrid design.

Workshop Format
The workshop is a 3-day offline (in-person) event from 10-14th June 2024 at the Technical
University of Munich Campus, (city), Bavaria, Germany. The workshop will include classroom
lectures, tutorials, and a final project using the discussed open-source tools to implement the
learned concepts. The TUM SEED Center will cover the transport, accommodation, and related
expenses.

Targeted Participants
The workshop is intended for young students at the master's or Ph.D. level. Those with an
essential background in Python are ideal candidates for the course as they can familiarize
themselves with the tools faster and later share their newfound knowledge with their peers at
their home university. As discussed, the SEED partner universities are invited/expected to send
representatives to the workshop and to apply for the mobility grant accordingly.

Pre-requisites

a. Basic knowledge of Python is a strict prerequisite for participation.

b. Bring your laptops for the workshop. (We will send all participants a separate file with
step-by-step installation instructions for the required tools.)
c. Please prepare the following living lab data and bring it with you: Hourly load profile,
topology, Hourly PV generation/ installed PV capacity, and solar irradiation of region and
cables). By the workshop's final day, each participant should be capable of simulating
the living lab using the learned open-source tools.
d. Please bring a list of technical challenges you faced/ are facing during your microgrids'
design and operation phase.
