STRUCTURE OF DNA
Usually, the DNA is made up of molecules called
nucleotides. But what are they consist of? Each
nucleotide is made up of a phosphate group, a five-
carbon sugar called deoxyribose and a nitrogenous
base. The DNA molecules have antiparallel
structures (double-helix) that run in opposite
directions of one another.

The DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is a double-

stranded nucleic acid located in the nucleus of the
cell. It is referred as the “blueprint of life” acting as a
long-term storage of genetic information.

STRUCTURE OF RNA
Similar to DNA, RNA is also made up of molecules
known as nucleotides. Each molecule contains a
phosphate group, a five-carbon sugar called ribose,
and a nitrogenous base too. These are the four types
of nitrogenous bases according to their
complementary pairing:

body.

DNA and RNA? Anyone?”

Student D: “DNA is the

long-term blueprint,
while RNA is the
temporary messenger.
DNA stays in the
nucleus and gives
instructions, while RNA
carries those
instructions to where
they're needed in the
cell.”

“Now, in this table you can see the different types of

RNA”

All of these three types of RNA together with DNA

work to build the proteins that the body needs. Thus,
the DNA and RNA are intertwined with each other.
But how are the two different in their structures? Let
us examine the table below.

NSCRRATTPNIOI- is the process that rewrites the

genetic code in the DNA into messenger RNA
(mRNA). It follows the base pairing principle,
except that in DNA, adenine pairs with thymine,
while in RNA adenine pairs with uracil.

SLTTRAIONSL- is the second step in the gene

expression wherein the codons (three nitrogen bases)
are translated. It is the process by which the
information in the mRNA is translated into the
sequence of amino acids in proteins.

In cell the DNA is in the nucleus so therefore

there is a transcription in the nucleus. In the steps
of transcription an enzyme called RNA
polymerase will connect complementary RNA
bases to the DNA. These RNA bases are bonded
together to form a single stranded mRNA.

“Remember that m in mRNA strands for messenger.

Messenger RNA consist of a message made of RNA
that has been based on the DNA”

In eukaryotes, mRNA can get out of the nucleus.

The mRNA can go out of the nucleus into
cytoplasm where it’s going to attach to a
ribosome.
RIBOSOMES MAKE PROTEIN.
