Modular Learning

Abstract

This survey was conducted chiefly to decipher the effects of modular learning to
learners. The survey sought to answer the following queries: Does modular kind of
learning give you the satisfaction in learning?, Do you learn anything from modular
learning?, Is modular learning way better than face to face learning?, Do you get to
understand what you are supposed to be learning in every module given?, and Do you
feel pressured when given a lot of modules to be answered for only a short period of
time without the right material or resources provided and no clear instructions given?
This study used the Yes/No survey method abetted with the descriptive researcher-
made questionnaire as the main tool in gathering the data from the respondents. After
the data were gathered and analyzed, we found out that students feel pressured in
answering modules for only a short period of time and that modular learning doesn’t
give a satisfaction in learning. Based on the conclusion, it is recommended that the
teachers and parents should work together to make students more involved in the new
education system as it is here to stay.

Introduction

In the sphere of education, it is very important to be flexible in adapting

whatever the means is available. When the pandemic started, lots of departments got
panicked and most businesses crippled down. The department of education was also
definitely affected by the crisis. Since then, the education bureau made a way out of
the situation and started the modular learning. It is a kind of approach to learning
where basically students need not to report to school every now and then. They are
instead provided with the materials they have to answer for a week and submit it to
school once a week. Modular learning also includes online learning where the
students learn and interact at the comfort of their homes. Though this, the students are
able to continue their studies and slowly make their dreams come to reality despite the
virus lurking around.

MAIN BODY

Modular learning has been our medium of learning since the pandemic started.
It has shaped the traditional system of learning into a modern and technology-based
kind of learning. Since the modular learning has been used for a couple of years now,
we were interested to see how other students perceive this kind of approach.
As mentioned before, we did a survey, a Yes/No survey with some questions
that would somehow evaluate what modular learning is to some students. First, we
asked if this kind of approach is satisfactorily good in acquiring knowledge and 10 out
of 10 responded No. This means that for the majority, modular learning is not an
effective way of absorbing information. Since they don’t get to fully understand the
lesson. Second, we asked if they ever get any learning from modular approach and
wonderfully 10 out of 10 responded Yes to this. Which means that despite the very
passive form of teaching and learning process, students still get the chance to learn
something from it.
They tried their best to read and comprehend the lesson on their own. Third,
we asked if whether or not modular learning better than face-to-face learning, and not
surprisingly 10 out 0f 10 responded No. This is very obvious, since a lot of students
struggle with this kind of approach compared to a face-to-face one where they get to
interact with people and ask clarifications from the teachers whenever a problem
arises. This is something they cannot do in modular learning. Modular learning limits
their interaction with their classmates and hinder the students’ motivation to learn
more. Fourth, we also asked if they get to understand what they are supposed to be
learning in every module given, and this got 1 student who responded Yes and 9 who
responded No. Which basically means that it depends on how well a student can
comprehend better than the other. More so, it also calls the attention of a responsible
adult available in the family, to whom a student can ask for help to understand a
certain text. And fifth, we asked if the students ever feel pressured in completing
modules in just a short amount of time without the right materials or resources and
clear instructions given, and this got 10 out of 10 who responded Yes. Well, this is
unfortunately true since a few suicidal incidents due to mental pressure had been
reported recently. Students say they feel pressured when they are given a limited
period to answer loads of material without even clear instructions of what to do. They
get the feeling of being anxious running against time despite having no prior lessons
given due to the kind of approach to teaching. However, students try their best to
answer the given materials and comply with what were asked for the sole purpose of
knowledge acquisition.

Conclusion

There were conclusions drawn based on the result of obtained from the survey.

Modular learning is a kind of challenge to both learners and teachers that both
are trying to adapt well. Students may feel pressured since they’ve been exposed to a
conventional way of teaching and learning process way before the pandemic
happened. Students and teachers are both internalizing modular way of learning and
teaching since it only happened due to the pandemic. For sure, students may feel that
modular learning is not as effective as face-to-face learning but it is our only way at
the moment to continue the flow of education, to progress and make dreams a reality.
As far as we know, this is probably here to stay so we have to make efforts to adapt
well into this kind of approach and if possible make ourselves comfortable integrating
technology if we feel the need to.
