LESSON 1: Electron Configuration

Electron configuration describes the arrangement
of electrons around the nucleus of an atom in
energy levels, sub levels, and orbitals. It is written
in the form 1s²where 1is the number of energy
level, sis the sub level and ² is the number of
electrons.

Figure 1 is a picture I have here the Periodic

Table of Elements, The teacher show that
periodic table can be divided into four regions
or block; s, p, d and f blocks.
Four types or sub-levels; s, p, d, and f
s-Block (SHARP)
- The first two groups of the periodic
table, Group IA and Group IIA
because it can hold only 2 electrons
the s-block metals are either alkali
metals and alkaline earth metals. Are
soft and have low melting points.

p-Block (PRINCIPAL)
-P-block elements include the last six elements
consist of Group IIIA through Group VIIIA of
the periodic table, excluding helium. The p-
block elements include all of the nonmetals
except for hydrogen and helium. P sub level
can hold up to 6 electrons.

d-Block (DIFFUSE)
-D-block elements are transition metals of
element consist of Groups IB until Group
VIIIB. D sub level can hold up to 10 electrons.

f-Block (FUNDAMENTAL)
- These

transition elements usually the lanthanide and

actinide series, including lanthanum and
actinium sub level can hold up to 14 electrons.

After the discussion the teacher shows

Table 1 the maximum number of
Student E: 2 electrons
electrons that can exist in energy sub
levels. Students answer the table Student F: 6 electrons
given.
Student G: 10 electrons

Type of sub levels Maximum number of Student H: 14 electrons

p 6 Electrons
d 10 Electrons
f 14 Electrons

Very good, everyone! Thank you.

Remember: We can distribute number

of electrons lower than the maximum
number required but never greater on
the designated maximum number.
Now, how are we going to write the
electron configuration of a given
element? Let us use a step by step
procedure to understand it easily.

Step 1. Determine the atomic number

of the element that we are going to
use.
Step 2. We are going to use the
electron configuration mnemonic
device.

Following the arrows and the maximum

number of electrons in each sub-level, the
electron configuration can be written as:
1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² 3d¹⁰ 4p⁶ 5s² 4d¹⁰5p⁶ 6s²
4f¹⁴ 5d¹⁰6p⁶ 7s² 5f¹⁴ 6d¹⁰ 7p⁶
Note: The numbers 2,2,6,2,3 written as
superscripts represent electrons so the total
should be 15 while the coefficients 1,2 and 3
represent the energy level occupied by
electrons.

As an example, let’s write the electron

configuration of Phosphorus with atomic
number 15 and therefore, has 15 electrons.

P
15

Phosphorus
30.974

15P 1s²2s²2p⁶ 3s² 3p³

D. Discussing new Electrons in the outermost highest energy level
concepts and called valence electrons
practicing new skills
#1 Valence Electron
( EXPLORE) -play an important role in forming chemical
bonds since they can be lost, gained, or shared
with other atoms thus, determining the
chemical activity of an atom.

Now, let’s find out how many valence

electrons Aluminum atom has ¹³Al
1s²2s²2p⁶3s²3p¹ electron configuration. What is
the valence electron of Aluminum?

E. Developing Mastery Now, let us analyze the relationship between
(Leads to formative electron configuration of elements and their
Assessment) position in the Periodic Table by doing this
(EXPLAIN) activity.
FILL THE TABLE!

Directions:
1. Complete table 1.
2. Use the Periodic table of elements to know
the period and group of the given elements.
3. I will ask the students to complete the table
on the board. They will select their responses
from the pieces of paper given.
4. Analyze the electron configuration of
elements that belong to the same period and
group.

What have you observed about the elements

from the same period after completing the
table?

Student O: I noticed that

elements in the same period
have the same number of
energy levels occupied.

You got it right, Student V!

What about elements that belong to the same

group?

Student P:I found out that

elements in the same group
have the same number of
valence electrons.

Very good! Your answer is right, Student W!

F. Finding practical I created an animated video about our topic. Student Q: I think I got it. In

G. Making To elaborate our topic for today, I prepare a

generalizations and game which is the “ELECTRON
abstraction about the CONFIGURATION BINGO”
lesson
(ELABORATE) Note: The test will be administered using
Electron Configuration Bingo Card, a free card
game in which the students will be given cards.
Objective:
1. Identify elements given their electron
configurations.

Materials: (per student)

 1 bingo card
 25 bingo markers (I recommend using 25
pennies)
 periodic table

Procedures:

1. I will call out the electron configuration of

an element.
2. From the question, determine the electron
configuration. Mark your card appropriately.
For example, if the question is “1s ²2s²2p⁶”,
you may mark your card only if you have
element Ne.
3. The winner of the game is the first person to
have 5 squares in a row marked.
