T h e C r e s t is headed by five stars which symbolize Equality, Peace, Progress,
Justice and Democracy. These are ideals on which a brotherhood of persons can
be built. Below, there is the torch that signifies the light of knowledge and the love
of learning. Encompassing it are five rings symbolizing sport and the part it can
play to link persons together. The five horizontal bands denote the five houses as
rivals in competition but steadfast in fraternity.

PRESENTATION PAY SPEECH
17 APRIL 1999
Speech by our Principal,
Mr Gan Chee Hau
Our Guest-of-Honour, Ms Tan Teng Wan, Deputy Director, Educational
Technology Development Branch, MOE, Mr Tan Boon Chiang, Chairman,
School Advisory Committee, Mr Manjit Singh, President, Alumni
Association, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Good
afternoon and welcome to our 36th Speech and Prize Presentation Day.
In the 35th Annual Speech Day in July 1998, I reported that it was a good year for the school,
l a m pleased to report this time round, we have a better year and we achieved several 'firsts'.
One of the 'firsts' for the school was that the fishes in our school pond gave birth to more than a thousand
baby fishes. We happily gave away these baby fishes to our staff members and other schools, thinking
that they were koi. Right now, there are some tilapias assuming the false identity of koi in the aquariums
and ponds in Singapore.
In the GCE 'IN' (Academic) Level examination, 94 % of our pupils, compared to the national figure of 76%,
did well enough to qualify for places in Secondary Five. This figure is 8% better than the 86% achieved in
the 1997 examinations. The top pupil, Charles Wong, who scored grades 1 in 5 subjects, was one of
the top 12 pupils in Singapore. Our school was identified as one of 19 schools with good performance.
In the GCE 'N' (Technical) Level examination, the 1998 cohort of pupils did better. 85% secured 5 or 6
passes as compared to 65% in 1997, an improvement of 20%.
The GCE 'O' level results improved when compared with the previous year's results. 82% of our
Express course pupils qualified for entry into the JCs compared to the previous year's 76%. From the
Normal course, 33% qualified for Pre-U or JC compared to the previous year's 28%. The Normal course
pupils of 1998 performed as well as the 1997 cohort on most measures. They scored higher than
national averages in distinctions in 10 out of 12 subjects.
In the Express course, we have made improvements in the percentage of pupils securing 5 and
7 passes, which were respectively 97% and 85%. The percentage of pupils securing at least
3 distinctions remained at 64% and the percentage of distinctions scored in all subjects was 45%.
We suffered a drop in the number of students who scored 5 or more distinctions. However, the 29%
who scored at least 5 distinctions is still quite high. At the upper end, we have 3 students securing
9 distinctions and 8 securing 8 distinctions. This is an improvement over the previous year of 5 pupils
with 8 distinctions. The top student, Ambica Ashok, scored 9 Al's, a 'first' in Swiss Cottage history.
She is also one of the 2 top Indian pupils in Singapore.

36th ANNUAL SPEECH & PRIZE
PRESENTATION PAY SPEECH
17 APRIL 1999
Our teachers will continue to work hard to address some of our weaknesses, build on our strengths
and make improvements in the coming years. You may have noticed that I have given more statistics
on distinctions than passes. The reason is that our pupils have the capability to perform very well
academically. 1 am confident that our team of dedicated teachers can provide the best for our pupils.
l would like to re-cap some of the achievements of the ECA programmes that the school offers in the
all-round development of our pupils.
Our Swiss Computer Club once again emerged with honours in the Inter-school Robotics
Competition organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I recall their previous year's winning entry,
Tic-Tac-Toe. It performed as expected in clinching the first prize and wisely chose to stall than beat me at
Tic-Tac-Toe. This year, their Smart Delivery Robot showed its cleverness by receiving the first prize in that
category. Our robots are getting as smart as our pupils.
There are many unofficial Swiss Cottage WebPages set up by present and former students.
I am pleased to announce that our instructor, Mr Pilla and the Computer Club members have set up our
HomePage. For obvious reasons, we call it 'The Official Swiss Cottage Secondary School HomePage".
The St John Ambulance Brigade continued to excel in their competitions. They were once again the
National Champion for Footdrill in the Ambulance Cadet Category. In the Ambulance Adult
Category, they were National Champions for Footdrill and First Aid (short case & long case).
They achieved a 'first' for their Unit by being the National Overall Champion - a feat that has eluded our
boys for many years. The team will represent Singapore in the forthcoming Singapore/Malaysia
First Aid Competition. Our SJAB also collected the highest amount among schools for the SJAB Flag Day.
For the National Youth Achievement Award this year, 57 SJAB members have received their Bronze
Awards to-date. These 57 SJAB members, 55 NPCC members and about 40 Scouts & Guides are
working towards achieving either the Silver or Bronze awards.
Our Swiss Falcon Scout Troop achieved a 'first'. They won the Frank Cooper Sands Award for
good performance by a school unit for the second year. Our Scouts and their sister Guides also formed
part of the supporting contingent for.the SYF and NDP '98. The Scouts contingent commander for
the NDP '98 was from our unit.
The Boy's Brigade, Guides, NPCC and NCC(Air) have been very active too. Our NCC 04 cadets
mounted the Guard-of Honour for the NCC Day Parade at Khatib Camp. NPCC members went on a trip
to Brisbane/Gold Coast this March, In between learning about the life and culture of Australians, they
had a 'screaming' time on the roller coasters. These uniformed groups have provided members
with knowledge and skills, especially important life skills. I am also pleased to report that most
members have performed community service and raised funds for charitable organizations in a spirit
of caring and sharing.
Swiss Winds continued to give performances for the public, and at school and community
functions. They formed part of the combined school band at the National Day Parade. The Band
successfully held a concert at the Victoria Concert Hall on 4 Aug, last year. Last December, they
staged a series of Christmas performances at shopping malls, complete with budding singers and
dancers. We may have to start a talent management scheme to chart their careers. Last week,
they scored a 'first' for Swiss Winds in the SYF Band Competition. They won a 'Gold', after a long string
of silver in past competitions.
The cultural groups, including the Dikir Barat and the various dance groups have practised
very hard and performed very well at functions. We are hopeful that the Chinese Dance will secure a
medal in the recently concluded SYF Dance competition and likewise for the Chinese Orchestra in their
competition next week.
I have to add at this juncture that ex-pupils in various other ECA groups such as the Scouts, Guides,

NPCC, NCC(Air), Swiss Winds, Dikir Barat, Chinese Orchestra and SJAB have continued to maintain links
with the present members and we appreciate their strong contributions.
In the area of sports and games, we only reached the Final Four of West Zone competitions in one
sport in 1998. This year, our teams reached the Final Four of zone competitions and
participated in the National Finals in 4 games, namely 'B' Division Soccer, 'B' Division Netball, 'C Division
, Basketball and 'B' Division Table Tennis. I have to add that the first three were hard-fought achievements
as the West zone has most of the best teams in these competitions. For Table Tennis, few schools
were willing to participate in the sport and our girls qualified as one of the only 4 teams from the zone.
Credit goes to our girls for having the guts and determination to compete against superior teams in
the national tournament.
In the Singapore Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad, the senior team came in 10th
position and the junior team 17th. Five students won the Gold Awards in the individual category.
In the "Fun with Technoscience Competition" organised by the Singapore Science Centre and the
"Junior Solar Sprint Competition" organised by the Singapore Polytechnic, our teams came in third
positions. A group of students went on an educational tour of China. They formed part of a group of
students from the schools in our Cluster West 1.
I have highlighted these achievements to provide you with an idea of the varied programmes we
offer in the all-round development of our pupils. We emphasise good academic achievement,
sound social values and skills as well as a strong sense of community spirit and concern for the
less fortunate. We strive to nurture every Swiss Cottage pupil to be responsible, thoughtful, capable
and ready to serve and lead.
I am proud to have a dedicated staff. Many have worked beyond the school hours, to develop
these qualities in our pupils. I am indeed very grateful to them. Together, we will bring the school into
the next millennium. We are committed to achieving our vision of "A Vibrant Learning Community".
Collectively, the school leadership and staff will identify areas for innovation and improvement,
develop programmes, network and collaborate with parents, community groups and organisations.
Many changes will occur in the next few years. I am pleased to report that our teachers are
upgrading themselves professionally to handle new technology and teaching pedagogy.
,They are dedicated and adaptable to the changes that are taking place in education.
In terms of infrastructure, work on a new classroom block, a computer block and sports
facilities is almost completed. We have added special rooms including a new gym, music room, dance
& drama studio and an orchestra room to complement our existing facilities. In the works are outdoor
adventure stations including a flying fox and a rock-wall. I believe one of our two VPs is considering
to be the 'first' to zoom down from the hall building to the technical block using the flying fox. By the
year 2000, we will have all the new facilities in place and with the school operating single session, we will
have more flexibility in providing various programmes for the all-round development of our pupils.
My congratulations to all the academic prize winners who will be receiving their awards today.
The ECA awards will be given during our National Day celebrations.
I would like to thank the Speech Day Committee, teachers, non-teaching staff and pupils for working
very hard to make today's function a memorable one.
I wish to record my appreciation to the Chairman, Mr Tan Boon Chiang and members of the SAC for
their invaluable advice and contribution. To the President, Mr Manjit Singh and members of the Swiss
Alumni, thank you for helping to foster closer ties with our ex-students.
To our Guest of Honour, colleagues, friends, parents and ex-students, thank you for your strong
support today.

VISIT BY JAPANESE STUDENTS
22 JULY 1999
On 22 July 1999, Swiss Cottage Cultural exchange
Secondary School played host to a
group of 20 students accompanied
by 2 teachers from the Soja Minami
High Senior High School from Japan.
The Swiss Prefectorial Board and
leaders of various ECA groups had
an enjoyable time exchanging
information with our J a p a n e s e
guests.
Our Head Prefect, Cindy Huang, gave a welcome speech. As we were in the midst of the
Racial Harmony Week, our pupils put on a culturally mixed performance to entertain our guests.
This was followed by a time of interaction among our guests and the Swiss pupils. Some of
the Japanese students learnt to make
Cultural exchange 'ketupat', a local Malay delicacy
under the guidance of the Malay
pupils. A few students showed off
their talent in calligraphy, after a
demonstration by the Swiss
Calligraphy Club.

VISIT BY JAPANESE STUDENTS
22 JULY 1999
The Japanese students particularly enjoyed the 'limbo rock' and 'bamboo dance' put on by
the NPCC boys.
Next, our guests were invited to a tour around the school premises. At the end of the tour,
they had a taste of Singapore's 'satay', courtesy of the Swiss Guides. Their reaction was 'HOT,
HOT and we had to take them to water coolers to cool their tongues.
After that, they proceeded to the canteen for lunch. Unfortunately they were not used to the
some of the spicy sweet stuff, which local students enjoy.
Time flew quickly. Before we knew it, it was time to say goodbye. However, I believe the
friendship between the two schools will continue to grow with each visit.

DRAMA NIGHT
31 JULY 1999
The moment of truth had arrived. The judges had just tallied up the votes and the emcees were getting
ready to announce the winners. All the participants were by the left aisle, anxiously waiting for the results.
Some were clutching their hands tightly to their chests, others were hugging their friends and biting their
nails. The sense of anticipation and excitement hung heavily in the air. Everyone was hoping that their
class would win.
It took a long time for the emcees to come onstage. Meanwhile, I was thinking of the happenings,
which had led to this significant night.
it was in May when we were told of the competition. A few of our classmates came together and
wrote a script. It was inspired by two movies, " Armageddon" and " Money No Enough". It was a rather
complicated script and our class was unsure if we could pull it off.
Nevertheless, we set to work on it enthusiastically, but the process was slow. That changed when our
school hired the services of a drama group, "Dramanation". They revised the script with us and advised
us to take only the first part of the script. We did just that and under the guidance of the instructors for over
two weeks, we improved in our acting. So did the rest of the participants from Secondary One, Two and
Three classes.
Before we could proceed to the finals, we needed to pass the preliminary rounds. It was held in the
Music Room. We were the first class to perform. We were extremely nervous but we gave it our best shot.
Later on, we watched the sketches put on by other classes. The performances by Secondary 2E2 and
2E4 were marvelous. As expected, they got into the finals. Imagine our elation when we were also
selected for the finals. We were motivated to do our best.
We slogged it out during June and July to perfect our sketch. Our English teacher also gave us
advice on our acting and speech. We were serious in our attitude. We wanted to win. Drama Night
finally arrived.
The air was filled with the nervous chatter of the actors. My friend and I decided to take a peek at the
audience. To our amazement, we saw that the hall was full. It was a grand affair. The stage was
prepared; music was aired through the speakers and teachers were rushing around, ensuring that
everything would run smoothly.
We quickly scurried back to our classroom. There, the cast members were chattering busily in an
attempt to calm their nerves. At half past seven, Secondary lEl went onstage. We became edgy.
The clapping signaled the end of the play and the next sketch was announced. As each class was
summoned onstage, my heart started beating faster. We were so tense that we huddled together and
whispered words of encouragement to each other. It was during that time that I finally noticed how close
our class had become. I had thought that we lacked class spirit but through this competition, we were
more united. I felt great being part of a team. All too soon, our turn came. We took up our positions.
Suddenly, an air of calm overcame my nervousness. My classmates and I were immersed in our roles.
Our sketch drew much laughter from the audience and that inspired us.
Take my picture. Make sure 2E1 - the winners You'11 have to choose - Hey, don't look at me.

60
DRAMA NIGHT
31 JULY 1999
The applause at the end of the performance was the sweetest I had ever heard. The audience
loved our play. We were overjoyed. However, judging by the applause for the other classes,
we knew that we were in for a tough competition. I was jolted from my thoughts by my friends.
The emcees had received the results. We had our hopes pinned on the Third prize as we thought that
that was our best chance.
'The Third prize goes to Secondary 3E6!" the emcees announced. We cheered for them. We held on
to our hope. There were still two more places up for grabs. We were now eyeing the 2nd prize.
Unfortunately, the second prize went to Secondary 2E4. We cheered for them but we felt gloomy.
We thought that another class would clinch the top prize. We hung our heads. " Now, the champion is..."
There was a long pause. "... Secondary 2E1...." 1 stood there in shock. I thought my ears were playing
tricks on me but the faces of my friends confirmed it. WE HAD WON. l screamed along with them.
We skipped our way up to the stage. I was near to tears during the prize presentation. All our hard
work had paid off. The applause was tremendous. That moment was precious and irreplaceable.
We took our leave but my teacher stopped me. "I think you should stay here." I had a vague feeling
about what was going to happen next. I was right. I won the "Best Actress" award. When 1 went
backstage, people were hugging and congratulating me. It was a night of pure joy for me.
Unfortunately, that night was also a night of disappointment for the other classes. They had worked
as hard as we did. I felt really sorry for them. But they did their best. They were winners too.
Although I had won the "Best Actress" award, I was even happier to win the "Best Sketch" award.
It was one time that our class was united to do something great. The feeling of togetherness
was fantastic.

MATHEMATICS DEPT
1999
The Department provides training in critical and creative thinking skills. Our pupils have done
well in the Mathematics Olympiad and Australian Mathematics Competition. Besides strongly
encouraging them to participate in external competitions, various inter-class competitions and
activities have been organised to enhance their interest in the subject. In addition, enrichment
and remedial lessons have been conducted to stretch the potential of the better students and
help weaker ones respectively. For example, after the examinations in the first semester,
a Maths Day was organised for Secondary Three pupils. After attending a lecture in the morning,
they were taken to Suntec City where they had to solve 35 problem sums. During the June
holidays, there was a two-day Maths Camp for Secondary Two pupils in the Cluster West One
schools. Some problem-solving activities were organised in West Mall, Lot 1 Shopping Centre
and CDANS. They also had to make use of The New Paper to solve the problems.
They enjoyed themselves tremendously.
The following are the results for both the external and internal Mathematics ComDetitions.

Mr S Radhakrishnan
Aims
It is our desire to educate our pupils academically, as well as enrich their lives by exposing
them to the wider aspects of arts and culture of Tamil Language.
Activities
Various activities have been conducted for them. These included a visit to the Night Safari
Zoo in the first semester and a learning journey to the Ngee Ann Polytechnic to view the Arts and
Cultural Exhibition held there. A quiz, debate, essay writing and singing competitions were held
on 28th August in our school for all the levels.
Achievements
Ten of our Tamil pupils participated in the Anti- Drug Abuse Quiz organised by SANA for Indian
Students. V. Sreenivasan (4N3), S. Devarajan (4E5) and Mageswari (5N1) made it to the finals and
did us proud. They won the Second Prize of ONE hundred dollars. National Junior College was
awarded the First Prize.
Four pupils, two from the Lower Secondary and two from the Upper Secondary levels took
part in the Creative Writing Competitions organised by the Languages and Literature Branch at
Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre.
Our pupils from the Lower Secondary and the Upper Secondary classes took part in the
National IT Competition held by the Tamil Language Movement. Although they did not win any
prizes, the event has inspired them to develop their skills. Mr S Radhakrishnan won the First Prize
in the Open Category of the IT Competition. We would like to congratulate him on his victory!
Greenridge Secondary School organised an Oratorical Competition and our pupil Thavasathe (2N l),
won the Second Prize in the Lower Secondary category. S. Hema (4N3) came in Third in the
Upper Secondary category.
We hosted a singing competition for Custer West One schools and our pupils won several
prizes. Mythili (1E2) won the First Prize and Kavitha (2T) received a Consolation Prize in the Lower
Secondary category. Suresh (4E4) won the Third Prize and Yogeetha (4E2) received a
Consolation Prize.
Future Plans
We wish to encourage our pupils to take on more challenging roles in major projects; to plan
and organise meaningful activities. Our aim is to develop all-rounded pupils.

PREFECTORIAL BOARD
1999
Teachers-In-Charge : Mrs Chin Kim Yoon
Ms Susan Lim
Mr Yong Ah Sau
Mr Simon Wong
Membership : 120
Aims
• To develop leaders
• To assist the school in maintaining a high standard of discipline
• To render service at all school functions
Activities
The Board started the year's programme by organising and supervising the Secondary One
Orientation in January. Besides the normal familiarisation activities regarding school culture and
facilities, the Board conducted bonding and team-building exercises to develop the Swiss spirit
among the new members of the Swiss family.
The highlight of the Board's calendar was the Prefects' investiture on 24 February. The pomp,
ceremony and dignity of the occasion reflected the honour and respect the School held for
the prefects.
The annual Prefects' Camp held from 3 to 5 September underlined the importance of esprit de
corps. The camp provided induction and training programmes for the newly appointed
Secondary One prefects. It also renewed the team spirit of the senior prefects. An additional
enrichment item was the EQ Workshop.
The Secondary Two prefects attended a leadership course at NACTI in June while the
Secondary Three prefects were immersed in another leadership programme organised by
the school's ODAC Club.
On 22 July, the Board and other ECA leaders played host to a group of Japanese students
from the Soja Minami Senior High School. A cultural display of ethnic songs, dances, traditional
games and food delighted and thrilled the visitors.
75
PREFECTORIAL BOARD
1999
Attendance by the Board at Cluster schools' investitures strengthened and widened the
network among the Cluster prefects and promoted the exchange of ideas.
The Board also served at the major school functions such as Sports Day, Annual Speech
and Prize Presentation Day, Teachers' Day, Swiss Open House Day and Parent Support
Group Meetings.
One key departure from the usual activities of the Board was the introduction of Akido,
a martial art form practised by police personnel. The weekly lessons conducted by a
professional instructor raised the image of the prefects to that of a well-armed, yet well-
disciplined group.
The grand finale in the Board's calendar was the Farewell Night held to honour and thank
the graduating prefects for their service and contribution to the School. The senior prefects
were showered with gifts and presented with Certificates of Appreciation.
Future Plans
The Board intends to widen the scope of the skills and knowledge of all prefects with special
emphasis on public speaking, social etiquette, personal grooming and effective communication.
The aim is not merely to develop leaders within the school community, but to develop leaders
for life!

Vice-President : Chan Sheh Wei
Secretary : Khor Mei Zhen
Asst Secretary : Brenda Fang Caiyu
Treasurer : Marianne Teoh
Designer : Chou Huishan
Assistant Designer : Chen Shiyin

Membership : 39
Venue : Art Room
Aims
• To raise an awareness and appreciation of art within historical, cultural, social and
environmental contexts.
• Encourage creativity, experimentation and innovation through the inventive use of materials
and techniques.
• Foster confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of achievement in art.
• To cultivate a thinking and inquiring mind.
• To contribute services to the school through stage decorations during school functions.
Activities
Members meet every Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon. In order to promote more than a
cursory interest in Art and Crafts, field trips and excursions were organised. During an exhibition
at La Salle SIA School of Art, students were introduced to various art forms such as, jewellery
making, multi media design, interior designing, dancing, pottery and fashion designing.
They were even exposed to the art of sand sculpting in Sentosa where an international
competition/exhibition was held along the entire stretch of the beach.
We are the artists behind the various stage decorations put up on stage during annual school
events, such as, Speech Day, Racial Harmony Day, Open House, National Day, Orientation Day,
Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Celebrations. This task requires us to do big-scale yet
challenging projects and hence takes up a lot of patience and time. We learn to explore, organise,
develop and translate our ideas into stage decorations that provide an aesthetic appeal to
Swiss students.
Achievements
We have put up a mini-exhibition on Orientation Day and Swiss Open House Day which
showcased students' works and projects such as; drawings, paintings, graphic designs, crafts
and interior/architecture projects. We even demonstrated
various crafts that we have learnt on these two occasions. Sentosa Sandsation: Sand sculpting
This demonstration includes Paper Tole, Stained Glass
and Ceramic painting, Sandart and Stencilling.
Future Plans
We are currently working on more plans to render
our services to the school. We hope to do more than
stage decorations and mural paintings. With the
implementation of the Art Enrichment Programme in the
year 2000, the Swiss Art Club looks forward to providing
their support so as to achieve a more vibrant learning
environment in Swiss Cottage.

Activities
A selection of players was done in January from the Sec l pupil cohort. Talented players were
grouped to represent the school teams in the inter-school tournaments.
The school sent both the 'B' and 'C teams to the West zone inter-School Badminton
Tournaments in February and March. We did not qualify for the second round but it was a learning
experience for the boys who played against some of the best players in Singapore schools.
For the rest of the members, regular practices were held every week under the guidance of
teachers. They played friendly games against each other and brushed up their skills.
Future Plans
The number of girls playing badminton is rather small, about 10 member altogether. With an
almost equal number of boys and girls in the school annual enrolment we hope to be able to raise
a team of girls to represent the school in competitions. This will be our target in the
coming years.

either type of chess during the weekly meetings. A trainer has also been engaged to teach the
members important strategies. We hope that members will be well trained and equipped for
national competitions.
Achievements
Besides regular chess sessions, members also organise competitions for themselves and the
school. One such competition for the school was organised after the first semestral examinations.
They also had an internal competition during the Swiss Open House.
Furute Plans
The new room for the Chess Club will be ready in 2000. it will be air-conditioned so that

Activities
1999 has been a busy and exciting year for the Swiss Chinese Orchestra. In addition to performing
at various school functions, the Orchestra also participated in the Singapore Youth Festival Music
Competition (Chinese Plucking Instrumental Ensemble Section) and was awarded the bronze award.
We also organised Orchestra Nite 1999, a full concert of Chinese instrumental music, and our members'
hours of practices were rewarded with compliments from the audience. In August, the Orchestra was
also well received when we performed at the Hong Kah National Day Observance Ceremony.
Apart from normal practices, music camps were also organised during the school vacations for ;
training as well as social interaction among the members. Internal music-exchanges were introduced
this vear to encorage individual excellence in skills and showmanship. Our members were also
e x p o s e d to good music by attending
noteworthy performances by other orchestras.
Whenever opportunities arose, our
members were sent for training and enrichment
courses. During the June holidays, three of our
members attended a national music camp
organised by the ECAC, MOE. The members
returned with great inspiration and shared their
experiences with the other members who
looked forward to participating in the activity
next year. Two of our members attended a
conducting course in September and will be
conducting some pieces next year. A team
comprising twelve members attended the WITS training work shop and their project came in as one of
the finalists in the school's WITS competition for students.
In line with the goal of providing our members with a more exciting and rounded experience in the
ECA, other enrichment activities were also incorporated into our programme this year. Our members
were exposed to Chinese-riddle solving, a new skill which they put into practice during our Mid-autumn
Festival Celebration. Folk- dancing and Chinese Chess sessions were also included in our programme
to inject more fun into our activities.
Future Plans
We would like to recruit more members and continue to enhance music appreciation among our
members. More enrichment activities will be conducted when possible to provide our members with a
more exciting and enriching experience in Swiss.

Aims
To keep up with the increasing pace of information Technology (IT), the presence of a
computer club in the school is vital. The term "computer club" often reminds others of a passive
club whose members face computers everyday and members are practically known as nerds.
However, the Swiss Computer Club has broken away from the norm by introducing outdoor
activities. Our club not only trains our members mentally but also physically, cultivating all-round
pupils for our school.
Nowadays, computers have become part and parcel of our lives. Without the invention of
computers, life will be quite tedious and boring. Therefore, having knowledge of computers is
very important. Our club trains our members in different aspects of information technology, mainly,
Internet, Micromouse, Multimedia, Programming and Robotics departments, according
to the members' interests. Our club also organises computer courses to further enhance
their knowledge.
ctivities
Our weekly meetings
consist of Basic Computer
Training,during which
members are separated
nto different departments
o imbibe computer
knowledge from the
seniors, and outdoor
activities, which include,
Captain's Ball, basketball
and the like. The
ntroduction of activities
has been well received
and will be continued for
he following terms.
88
COMPUTER CLUB
1999
At the start of every year, we will have our Sec One Orientation (a.k.a. DeOrient). This is the
most important event in the club's calendar. The recruitment of Sec One members brings the
pupils interested in computers together in our club, where they can gain new
knowledge through discussions. In De Orient, Multimedia presentations, our mice from the
Micromouse department,
Programming demonstrations and robots will be displayed. Our well publicised orientation
programmes have been receiving tremendous response from the newcomers. More than a
hundred Sec Ones sign up each year, but due to space constraints in our computer lab, we can
only take in thirty. Therefore, the Sec Ones undergo a selection procedure by taking an Aptitude
Test that comprises intellectual and computer-based questions.
Following this is our annual June holiday camp that aims to strengthen bonds among
members, promote teamwork and co-operation, and train them for leadership and discipline.
These qualities are important in competitions which require team participation and camaraderie.
Our farewell party, known as "Valedicere", is held every August to thank the seniors for their
service to the club and the school. It is also the time when the new committee for the next year
officially take over all duties from the seniors. On 28th and 29th October last year, we held an
exhibition, open to all students and staff, to publicise our activities. Some Multimedia projects and
web pages done by our very own members, and PowerPoint presentations done by Sec One
members were displayed.
Achievements
The competitions in which we take part almost every year are the Inter-school Robotics
Competition, Inter-school Micromouse Competition and Singapore Robotic Games. Others
include Graphical user Interface (GUI) Competition, Multimedia Greeting Disk Competition, Ana
Snatch Robot Competition and National Software Competition (NSC).
In April, our members participated in the Interschool Micromouse Competition when we
qualified for the finals. This has been an improvement. However, we hope to achieve better
results next year. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to take part in the Singapore
Robotic Games this year.
Future Plans
The Swiss Computer Club strives to soar higher and and gain greater recognition among our
peers. We hope to make the learning and usage of computers an enjoyable and interesting
process through all our activities. Together with the tremendous support we have received from
the teachers and our fellow pupils, the Swiss Computer Club is confident of realizing our future
vision - bagging a huge collection of trophies, instilling greater commitment in members,
developing more potential in the fields
of technology, and rendering more
IT services to our school thus
continuing to "Blaze a Path of Glory"!
As the school has a webpage on
the Internet, our club is in charge of
maintaining the webpage. Thus, the
need to set up an internet Department.
Doing a w e b p a g e also requires
programming - HTML and JavaScript -
so we have merged both departments
together, our new 'Internet cum
Programming' section.

GIRL GUIDES
1999
Teachers-ln-Charge : Ms Ng Huey Leng
Ms Tan Chiew Hia
Adult Leader : Goh Liyan
Treasurer : Chew Sihui
Membership : 66
Aims
• To provide girls with the opportunity of self-training in the development of character, in the
realisation of responsible citizenship and promotion of service to the community
• To maintain high ethical standards based on the aims and principles embodied in
the "Promise and Law" as laid down by the Founder
• To encourage local and international goodwill and understanding by establishing friendly
relations with the girls of other schools and nations.
Activities
The Guides meet for four hours every Saturday morning. Colour party and roll call
repectively is a common custom in a Guides Company. During the meeting, we conduct
the Guides 5-point programme, namely Personal and Social Development, Home, Outdoor,,
Community and International Awareness. The modules of the programme is evenly
distributed throughout the year. There are also interesting and useful skills which we
learn, such as knotting, canoeing, pitching tents, cooking outdoors and organising
special events. Besides training and fellowshipping among our own Guides, we
also attend different campfires held by other schools during the year. Twice a year,
an enrolment and a training camp would be planned to equip our new and old Guides
with the necessary skills. We also enrol in training programmes provided by our Guides
Association. Lastly, the traditional Passing-out-Parade, usually on a sentimental note, marks
the handing over of responsibilities to a fresh group of new guide leaders.
Achievements
To date, 18 girl guides received the Silver Award in the Guides 5-point programme and
18 received the Bronze Award. 80% of the graduating guides achieved 40% proficiency badges
while the rest are making good progress. We started off with the NYAA Project this year, looking
ahead to achieving the Silver and Bronze Awards in the year 2000. 40% of the guides completed
the first module which was Archery.
On our annual Thinking Day on 22 February, we organised a joint event with the Scout whose
Founder's Day falls on the same date. Different ECA groups were invited and friendly relations
were further enhanced.
Participation in the beach clean-up organised by Sembawang-Hong Kah Community
Development Council boosted our contribution in community service this year, we sent twenty
girl guides who use canoes to clean the beaches in Sembawang and the group received
certificates of participation, it was also meaningful time spent with other ECA participants from
various schools as we shared our ideas. The West Guide Division Day was another highlight in
March. Eighteen girl guides joined the Food and Nutrition Competition and were awarded for their
participation.
To further boost our contribution to community service, ten girl guides took part in the
St Luke's Hospital Flag Day which was a charity drive to assist the elderly in the Home. A handful
of guides also volunteered their services in school community projects at the Old Folk's Home
and the Children's Home.
As a move to support our Guides Association, we heeded the call to sell cookies. It is
heartening to note that a considerable figure of 90 tins and 25 bags of cookies were sold.

GIRL GUIDES
1999
Later in the year, six girl guides would be competing in the Camp Challenge organised by
Guides Association. Preparation is currently carried out.
Future Plans
• Besides implementing the Guides 5-point programme and the Proficiency Badge
Scheme, we will also continue to press on for the NYAA Programme; we hope to achieve 20%
in Silver Award and 70% in Bronze Award in Year 2000 and 2001.
• To lay a stronger foundation in community services, it is our plan to adopt a primary school
and conduct remediation work to the younger children for at least six months every year.
At scheduled periods, trips to the Children's Home and Old Folk's Home will also be arranged.
Ad-hoc community projects will be adopted to accomplish the Guiding objectives.
• It is our vision also to become a strong Guides group by building up our guiding skills,
together with the important survival skills in the Year 2000. We will attend more training
programmes and invite professionals to teach us.

MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE CLUB
1999
Teachers-in-Charge : Mrs Sally Yu
Mdm Choo Beng Hong
Mrs Yeo Poh Leng
Membership : 27
Aim
Our meetings enable students to find out more about Mathematics and Science, acquire
knowledge that goes beyond the textbooks and also to learn and discover new things through
field trips, experiments and activities.
The members visited the Singapore Science Centre to further broaden their horizons in
mathematics and science. We visited the Snow Festival and Energy Exhibition and also went for
short courses and seminars such as Reef insight during which students get to know more about
coral reefs and the dangers they are facing. Participation in Brain Station required members to
apply their mathematics knowledge to solve challenging puzzles.
Recently, we had 2 major activities. One was the Maths & Science Extravaganza Showcase
during the Swiss Open House 1999. The other was the Swiss Challenge meant for the whole
school. 5 representatives from each class were sent to participate in this activity.
Future Plans
Our club intends to have more of the longer courses at the Singapore Science Centre (SSC).
There would also be more field trips. Examples are excursions to SSC, farms as well as other
various places of interest like the Singapore Zoo to further enhance our members interest in
mathematics and in science. We also intend to participate in competitions organized by the
Singapore Polytechnic and SSC. We are also striving for a membership of 40 students next year.

Aim
To increase purposeful usage of the library, i.e., for collaborative interdisciplinary projects.
Activities
The pupil librarians are on duty once a week and are mainly occupied with the routine work
of manning the school library viz. shelving of books, repairing of books etc. When pupils have
any requests as to where to find a particular book, the librarians or teachers in charge will
attend to them. We also provide photocopying services.
Laser discs, video tapes and CD-Roms are also available for use in the library. The
computers are for the pupils to surf the Net and do their project work. Book displays were also
arranged with book suppliers for both teachers and the pupils.
Achievements
We have also recently formed a team to publish the library newsletter and our maiden issue
was out last term. The pupils were from the Lower Secondary classes and we hope to be able
to improve on our next issue. For the Swiss Open Day we set up a book cum CD-Rom display.

NATIONAL CAPET CORPS (AIR)
1999
Teachers-ln-Charge : Mr Ho Joo Seng
Mrs Lim Lai Kuen
Membership : 112
Aims
• To develop future leaders who are physically and mentally fit
• To maintain high standards of discipline and conduct.
Activities
Swiss NCC (Air) is an open unit. This means that our cadets report to the NCC (Air) HQ at
Changi Airbase once a week for their regular training in foot-drill and lectures in Aeronautics and
Aviation Technology. Other courses and activities are also conducted there.
Cadets attend an Annual Training Camp to get their Silver and Gold Wings and Specialist
Badges. They also take part in an annual range practice where they learn to shoot with the M16
rifle for their Marksmanship Badges.
One of the main aspirations for all cadets is to get the RSAF Badge (formerly SAF Army Badge)
which enables them to become auxiliary instructors during National Service. This badge is awarded
to them only when they have gone through a tough training course conducted by the commandos
and soldiers from 3SIR (Third Singapore Infantry Regiment.)
Other courses are also organised for them. These include SANA (Singapore Anti Narcotics
Association), Civil Defence, Scuba diving, Canoeing, and even Mountain Climbing and Trekking.
Therefore you can see that the cadet has a balanced adventurous and intellectual slate of
activities. Over and above these, they get to interact with the air cadets from all over the world
through the IACE (International Air Cadet Exchange) Programme. Visits are regularly exchanged
among the cadets from member countries to form strong ties of goodwill and friendship as well
as to foster understanding of the diverse cultures and ways of life of the cadets.
Achievements
Swiss NCC (Air) was given the honour of mounting the Guard-of-Honour for this year's National
Day Parade in school. It was the first time in our history that we were given this honour. With great
enthusiasm and determination and lots of sweat, the cadets rose above their expectations and
went on to put up a wonderful show.
Future Plans
Swiss NCC (Air) has become a mature ECA. It has continued to attract keen interest from the
students posted to the school. It is time that we look forward to the day when we have full-time
officers from the school. The Corps should be school-based and training can be carried
out in school.

Membership : 41
Aims
• To promote netball as a healthy activity among Swiss girls
• To strive to be the top three among schools in the West zone
• To be the top ten teams for netball in Singapore schools
• To train and nurture players of national standard in the Swiss Netball team.
Activities '
• Weekly Schedule
Training and practice sessions are held twice a week under the coaching of Miss Rosa Shen. One
practice each is held on Thursday afternoons and Wednesday mornings for the 'B' and 'C teams
respectively. The combined training session is held on Saturday mornings when the girls are able to
train together and hone their individual skills. This not only promotes esprit de corps but also enhances
cohesiveness and sportsmanship.
• Clinic Sessions
in order to better equip our girls with the rules of the game and master competition strategies, National
Coach, Mr Goh Seng Tat, conducted three clinic sessions in July and August during which we were able
to clarify anomalies in the enforcement of rules during matches as well as gain s o m e pointers in attack
and defence strategies.
• Friendly Matches
in August, we played a friendly match with Yuhua Secondary School when the B' girls trounced the
Yuhua team at six quarters of play. Though we were trailing by 2 points after the first quarter, through
sheer determination and team work, we took the lead from the second quarter. It was a good start for
our pre-seasonal training as we gird ourselves for the West Zone Tournament early next year.
However, victory w a s not for the 'C girls, due to lack of experience in competition skills and
coordination on the court. Still, they displayed great resilience and sportsmanship as they did their
level best. We shall be playing more friendly matches after the final examination is over.
• Annual Events
We help the PE department to organise and umpire inter-class netball matches during the post-exam
period. In this way, we hope to promote netball as a healthy game among the Swiss girls. The farewell
party for our graduating seniors held at the close of the ECA calendar year is a feature of the camaraderie
and fun in the team.
Achievements
Early this year, both our 'B' and 'C teams participated in the West Zone Netball Tournament held
annually. Both trained rigorously and fought hard against schools in the line-up. Our 'B' team emerged fourth
in the West Zone, thus qualifying for the Nationals during which we played against veterans like Nanyang
Girls, River Valley High, Methodist Girls, St. Hilda's and CHU Katong. A notable match was the one against
Fairfield Methodist during which we beat them by a narrow margin of two points after a tough fight. It w a s a
great moment of triumph for Swiss netball as with this victory we clinched the fourth position in the West Zone
and one of the top sixteen schools in Singapore. Our 'C team lost
to better teams as Kranji Secondary and River Valley High. 4th in WZ Top 16 in S' pore
Having been able to compete against so many schools is in
itself an honour and a great learning experience in competitive
sports. The m a t c h e s h a v e also brought us closer to our
opponents off-court and broadened our horizons as we strive to
improve in our standard of play.
Future Plans
As we identify our weaknesses and strive towards excellence
in the game, we shall be playing more friendlies with CHU Toa
Payoh, Singapore Chinese Girls, Commonwealth Secondary and
others for greater exposure to the wider netball fraternity. Come
next year, our Swiss Netball team shall perform even better not
only in the West Zone but also in the National Tournaments.

our aims set this year. Both will be participating in the Inter-School West-Zone Soccer
Championship in February 2000.
Achievements
The year 1999 saw us perform better compared to 1998. The 'B' division team has done the
school proud by clinching the 4th placing in the Inter-School West Zone Soccer Championship.
The team played their very best during the initial group stage and their efforts paid off. The team
is currently one of the top 16 teams in Singapore. This was unlike last year when we could only
manage to qualify for the 2nd round in the West Zone games.
Future Plans
The boys are training conscientiously in preparation for the Zonal and National
Schools Championships next year and they aim to better their performance and emerge among
the top ten schools in the year 2000.

SCOUT GROUP
1999
Group Scout Leader : Mr Lim Jason
Membership : 56
Aims
We aim to instil in our Scouts strength of character, ruggedness, a keen sense of
independence and adventure.
Activities and Achievements
• Orientation '99
All the Scouts worked very hard during the recruitment drive. We set up a campsite,
a 3-storey watchtower and cooked a chicken for the Sec. l students to taste. But the main
attraction was the aerial runway that we set up in the quadrangle. The Sec. l students had
much fun zooming down from the platform to a soft landing. We managed to recruit 28
new Scouts this year. A great improvement!
• Scout Founder's Day and Guide Thinking Day
This year, the Falcon Scouts and the Swiss Guides had a combined campfire to
c o m m e m o r a t e the founder of the Scout
and Guide movement, Lord Baden-Powell.
It was an internal campfire - only various ECA
groups and the staff of Swiss Cottage were
invited instead of the usual invitation to Scout
Troops and Guide Companies of other schools.
Everyone present had great fun that night and it
was a memorable evening for all.
• Archery
The NYAA aspirants from the Scouts and Guides
were the pioneer batch in the school to attend
the archery course. They passed the Physical
Recreation section requirements and are on their
way to completing their NYAA Award.
• West Area Patrol Leader Training Camp
The camp was held at Ghim Moh Secondary
School in the June holidays. The Sec.2 Scouts
attended the camp where they learnt to be
proficient in skills like knotting, map reading and
first aid. They also learnt to be responsible
enough to take up the post of Patrol Leader,
which was the objective of the camp.

• National Day Parade 1999
Five Falcon Scouts took part in this national celebration in a contingent of 50 Scouts
representing the Singapore Scout Association. Of the five Falcon Scouts, three were awarded
the 3rd year Parade Badge. This is the highest level of Parade Badge awarded by
the Singapore Scout Association.
• West Area Field Day 1999
This year, the Falcon Scouts put up a fun' stall for the Cadet Scouts called 'SuperBowl', a
fusion of soccer and bowling. The participants for the Scout Sports trained very hard for
the events and their efforts paid off; they came on par with another Scout unit after rounds
of various gruelling contests, winning the Han Lim Juan Area Commissioner's Challenge
Shield for the first time in our school's Scout history.
Future Plans
Our Falcon Scout Troop has been actively participating in HQ activities. We plan to
participate in more competitions like the National Patrol Camp and the National Campcraft
and Pioneering Competition to test ourselves against our fellow Scouts in Singapore,
in the coming years, we hope to s e e the Falcon Scout Troop rising to become
one of the more competent and active Scout Troops in Singapore.

• SYF Band Competition/Band Fiesta
The highlight of the year was being awarded the Gold Medal at the SYF Band
Competition in April. The band, under the guidance of our band director, Mr Anthony Chew,
had put in lots of hard work and time in preparing for the competition. We were indeed thrilled
that despite stiff competition from other school bands, we were awarded the Gold Medal.
In conjunction with the band competition, we were invited to perform at the Botanical Gardens
Band Fiesta in July alongside other Gold Medallists. It was indeed an enriching experience.
The band was also invited to be the band in-attendance for SYF presentation II held
at the Kallang Theatre in July.
• Annual Dinner
The annual dinner was held on 20th August at Pin Hsiang restaurant in RELC building. It was

Activities
• Annual Event - Swiss Sports Meet
Our House members practised conscientiously from February to mid-April, on a weekly basis,
for the events for which they had signed up at the Annual Sports Meet. The Secondary One
members showed much enthusiasm and they contributed much to our victories. The 'C
Division girls relay teams consisted mainly of Secondary One students and they did
quite well, too.
Achievements
There was fierce competition amongst the Houses for the Track Events, but we still
managed to get a few prizes for the first three positions. We came in first in the
4 X l 00m 'B' Division Girls Relay Although we did not manage to be the Champion House this
year, we maintained our 4th position. We believe that we can achieve better results if
we strive harder.
Future Plans
We will strive harder in order to excel in the next Sports Meet.

Green House
The various houses play a significant role in the school. One of them is Green House, which has been
doing consistently well in the past few Sport Meets. The Green House motto is Together we strive, together
we excel', which means unity is our strength.
We believe that by giving our full support to fellow members who took part in the races, it would boost
their spirit and confidence, especially in the long distance events. On the whole, the members in the Green
House has developed a sense of belonging and loyalty.
Sports' Day
The 36th Annual Track and Field Championships 1999 was held on 22nd May at Bukit Gombak
Stadium. On that morning, students were properly attired in their own house T-shirts. All the participants
were very excited and nervous about the race.
When the first race began, the Green House non-participant members actively showed their
support for the competitors by their loud cheers. In fact, with their moral support, Green House won quite
a number of events.
Unfortunately, we had to be satisfied with 3rd position. However, we were not disheartened
as our energetic and cheerful leaders were awarded with the title, Best Cheerleading Team. Finally during
the prize presentation, the Green House Heroes were awarded
with trophies and medals.
This has inspired the next generation of Green House
members to do well in the next Sports Meet and to bring
honour to Green House.
Achievements
• Best Cheerleading Team.
• Third at the 36th Annual Track and Field Championships.
Future Plans
We strive to do our level best and clinch the
Championship Trophy in Sports Meet 2000.

A Good Neighbour
Father left home for war-time service when I was at the tender age of four. I never did
have a clear impression of how he looked. Was he well built? Was he handsome? Had he
ever carried me in his arms? I did not know, and I never got to know.
Mother and 1 were the only ones at home. We had the whole three-room flat to
ourselves. Standing at 1.54m, Mother was a strong-willed woman. Despite earning a
small salary as a factory worker, she was determined to give us at least three meals a day.
She w a s out early in the morning, leaving two b o w l s of porridge on the
table - one for breakfast and one for lunch. She would come back at about six o' clock in
the evening with a packet of rice and fried v e g e t a b l e s , then rush off to
work again.
Due to this, I was normally the only one at home. My only companion was Mrs. Tan.
She lived next door to us and had retired. Her husband had died, leaving her with a
small fortune, enough to support her till the day she died. She was tall and thin,
unlike my mother. Her hair was always tied in a neat bun: not a single strand was
out of place. She was fragile-looking; a strong gale would probably blow her off
her feet. She was a friendly old woman who kept a smile on her face every minute
of the day.
She knew about my family and understood the fact that l w a s lonely and
wanted company. She would sit at the corridor of my house all through the day,
telling me stories about princes and princesses, knights and warriors. Day after day,
1 would listen quietly to her stories that never seemed to end.
120
From then onwards, the two of them became friends and were always helping
one another. Mrs. Tan took care of me, and in turn, Mother would, whenever she was
free, cook a few meals for her, a goodwill gesture to someone who truly had been a
good neighbour.
This composition won the Third Prize in an essay writing competition, "Good Neighbour
Week 99," organized by the Hong Kah North Constituency.
The Internet also provides a means of communication between people from different
parts of the world. This is done through the system of electronic mail, more commonly
known as email. People from different parts of the world can now send and receive letters
and other computer-generated files within a matter of seconds. Most prefer to use this
mode of communication as they are afforded the convenience of not having to spend time
manually writing letters, getting envelopes and stamps and putting the finished documents
in the postbox. Upper-end users may also benefit from voice and video-conferencing that
can take place in real time at almost negligible cost.
But just as a coin has two sides, so does having access to the World-Wide-Web have
its disadvantages. The use of the Internet gives rise to chat sessions amongst users
via the computer. People, especially the youth of today, seem to be enamoured by
this and they spend and oftentimes waste much of their invaluable time on this. Thus,
they tend to neglect their studies and so not perform well academically.
121
There are also certain harmful programs or viruses lurking about in this massive
world-wide network of computers. Some of these can accidentally get into one's
personal computer while accessing the internet. These can damage computer software,
hence resulting in breakdowns. A recent example of such a virus is the one named
'Chernobyl' which affected information systems worldwide. Most of the time, the damage
can easily be rectified, but there are occasions when this is permanent, what results is
a great loss of money and loads of inconvenience when expensive hardware becomes
nothing but a worthless piece of junk.
Reviewing the above discussion, it would be prudent to say that having access
to the World-Wide-Web does have its pros and cons, in the final analysis, whether
the World-Wide-Web is a blessing or a curse depends on how one deals with the
whole situation.

Dear Diary...
The drizzle has stopped. There is a calm silence after the rain. Nobody is awake, not
even my brother. My mother and brother are lying on the damp makeshift bed in this
refugee camp. I am listening to the morning noise around me. Do you know that it has
been a long while since I felt so serene? Should this peace last, I would be delighted.
1 yearn to indulge in this tranquility. But I cannot bring my mind to a peaceful state.
The worries are countless. Just thinking about the events that occurred yesterday is enough
to send me into a state of emotional turmoil.
Yesterday was a historical day. It was the start of hostilities between the communists
and capitalists. This war seems meaningless. We are a nation, yet there is fighting among
ourselves.
My father was sent to the war front, fighting for an abstract cause we could not
comprehend. My mother cried when my father was dragged away to fight. She knew it
would be our last glimpse of him. I felt her despair. I did not know
at to do except to step forward to give her a hug. We were
locked in the embrace for a long time. At that moment, I was
afraid to let go, afraid to lose her.
122
an eerie orange glow from the burning building. There was chaos. People screamed and
ran around aimlessly. 1 did not know what to do. All l could do was to cower in the warmth
of the stranger's chest. The next moment, 1 found myself in a refugee camp in a dense
forest. The place was a disturbing sight. There were many people looking very distraught.
Everyone looked so forlorn. The children were crying. The women were mourning.
They looked as helpless as 1 felt. There were so many innocent victims. I just could not
understand the need for war.
I went in search of my mother and brother. It was in vain. But I stumbled over the
actual war front. There, 1 saw someone engaged in a cold and brutal game to eliminate his
enemy. He was stabbing his enemy with his hunting knife, mercilessly. I felt spiritually and
morally lost. 1 could not bring myself to believe that human beings could be so cruel. 1 ran
back to the refugee camp. I managed to find my mother and brother in a hut. She was
crying again. Looking at her pale face, l could not bear to tell her what I had seen.
In the daily world of television images, it was easy for me as an onlooker to dismiss war as
just another piece of news. I used to detach myself from the suffering of both the civilian
and military participants. But, now, I feel their deep hurt.
We are stranded in this tree-dense area. I am very hungry and thirsty. But I do not
know where to search for water and food. I feel so useless. I cannot cheer my mother up.
I am putting a brave front to hide the vulnerable me. Actually, my heart has been broken
into a million bits.
I know that I have to come to terms with these conditions, but it is a painful struggle.
And Dreams, I cannot help wishing you were real, guiding me through the dark tunnels.
Being the eldest, I naturally took great satisfaction in assuming the role of the leader.
I practically took over the night's proceedings and left my sibling to decorate the house,
print the card and buy the present. I insisted on doing everything else myself;
I even wanted to cook the dinner personally and bake the cake!
That much awaited day came, and I was literally bubbling over with excitement. It was
nearly impossible to conceal my enthusiasm that morning, and when my mother finally left
the house for work, both my sister and I heaved a sigh of relief. We quickly set to work, she
in decorating the house, and I in preparing the meal. I had come up with a menu full of
exotic dishes, never once stopping to consider the fact that I had never stepped into the
kitchen before. The only cookery lessons I had came from television.
l23
The soup was rather easy to prepare or so it seemed.
I emptied two cans of cream of mushroom soup into a pot
and left it to boil. What I had failed to realize was that I had
to dilute each can with four glasses of water. The result
w a s a real witches' b r e w of s o u p c o n c e n t r a t e .
Happily, and totally oblivious of the culinary disaster to come,
I left the pot to simmer while I turned my attention to the
main course: black pepper steak.
About an hour later, I decided to check on my soup. Strangely, it looked rather thick but
after catching a whiff of its aroma, I decided that all was well. New generation soup, I
concluded. Confident of success, l did not even bother to taste it.
Subsequently, the oven's timer rang and I took the three dripping wet pieces of meat to
the oven to bake. 1 then proceeded to work on my chocolate cake. 1 broke all the rules of
the bake book and mixed everything together in a plastic basin. No need to complicate
matters by going through all the stages, I thought.
My sister came in to remind me that mother was returning soon. The look that
registered on her face was that of shock as she observed the state the kitchen was in.
I hurriedly cut her off, assuring her that I would clean the mess up in no time at all.
The timer rang again reminding me to take the meat out. That having been done,
I frantically shoved the cake mix inside. I then set the steak into three plates. It was odd
that they were not as hot as l had expected.
When mother arrived, I somehow managed to persuade her not to enter the kitchen.
She was as pleased as Punch when she saw that the dining table had been set. Once she
was seated, I served her with a bowl of soup. I waited expectantly for the praises to flow.
To say that she finally managed to choke down the first spoonful was an understatement.
Her face nearly turned purple! Embarrassed, 1 then assured her that the steak was different
and of superior quality. Hesitantly, both she and my sister took a bite each. They never got
past the spicy concoction that I had created and it took nearly all the ice cubes in the
freezer to cool them down.
Seeing that l was nearly in tears, my mother asked, "What about the cake?"
124
Describe an occasion when things did not
turn out as expected.
I switched off my computer and went to bed, feeling ecstatic about what was going to
happen on the following day. It was the big match between my class and 4E3. This match
was part of the E-League, a soccer league organized by the students in Secondary 4
Express. As this was our last year at Swiss Cottage, we decided to mark our departure
with a soccer league in which every class would send a few representatives to play.
I was the captain of my class team and I could not wait for the next day to come.
Finally, after almost an hour of tossing and turning, I drifted off to sleep, envisioning the
fantastic goals that I would score during the match.
When I woke up, I hurriedly did my chores and left for school. "Deva! Pay attention
in class! And wipe that silly grin off your face!" shouted Mrs. Tan, my form teacher. I had
not realized the fact that I was grinning from ear to ear, like a two-year old who had
just discovered the joys of chocolate. I looked at my friend, who responded with a
smirk and an understanding wink. I returned to my daydreaming stupor, oblivious to
the events around me.
Finally, the school bell rang, signaling the time for dismissal. However, for me, it also
meant the soccer 'showdown'. My classmates and I hurriedly changed into our soccer 'kit',
which comprised our class T-shirt and school RE. shorts.
As we stepped onto the court, we heard imaginary cheers erupting from the imaginary
stands. I looked around in earnest, trying to see if we had any supporters. To my dismay,
all I saw was a small group of boys, passing the time by spouting vulgarities at one
another. I just shook my head and started doing my warm-up exercises.
Then I saw them. They entered the court like a mob, ready to kill
anyone who was in their way. I gulped in an attempt to swallow the
fear that had suddenly welled up inside me.
129
The opposition goalkeeper, seeing the opportunity, kicked the ball with a tremendous amount
of strength towards my goal post.
After some confusion on our part, we heard the dreadful word. "GOAL!" they shouted.
I sat down in despair, unable to do anything.
Much too soon, the referee's shrill whistle ended the game. I went over to our
opponents and congratulated them over the victory. They accepted my wishes graciously
and thanked us for the wonderful match.
Things had not turned out the way I expected, leaving me with a valuable lesson learnt.
"Next time, don't be so over-confident," my mother chided when I returned home.
1 managed a weak smile and went to bed.

Before I could utter word, a husky male voice cut in, "You've got the wrong number."
Then the line went dead. Mystified, 1 redialed. "I told you that you've got the wrong number,"
the same male voice snapped.
Curious, 1 stated "1 am curious how you knew I've got the wrong number. I haven't even
said anything."
" You figure it out." The phone slammed down. 1 sat there for a while, the receiver
hanging loose in my fingers. Then I called the man back.
"Well ... 1 guess you never receive any phone calls," I meekly answered.
I told him who I was and asked him about himself. I came to know that the man was a
75-year-old Jonathan Hanks. He had been living for 20 years in solitude on Long Island.
He had no family, no friends. Everyone close to him had died. We chatted for lO minutes
and I asked him if I could call him back.
"Why?" he asked.

"Will you please marry me?" he proposed. Tears dripped from my eyes. I smiled,
took the ring, put it in his right hand and signaled him to put it on for me. He was over
the moon. We hugged each other and decided to tell our parents about the good news.
We left in his red Ferrari sports car. 1 put on my safety belt while he did not.
A truck came out of nowhere and crashed into us. It happened so fast that I could only
close my eyes and when I opened them, I saw him on top me, shielding me from the
impact. He was covered with blood and was moaning painfully.
Not long afterwards, there was complete silence. A haze of fear surrounded me.
I was afraid that Hercules might die. I disengaged my safety belt and cradled his head in
my hands. I cried, stroked his hair and called his name, hoping that he would regain
consciousness. I looked at his twisted form and remembered how we met...
128
I was going to class one day when someone bumped into me, causing me to drop all
my books. He helped me to pick up the books and when we raised our heads,
our eyes met. It was love at first sight. He melted my heart with his big, round seductive
eyes and hair that was cut close to his face. He was just like Tom Cruise, perhaps a little
more good-looking. He smiled and asked for my name. We became very close friends
after a few weeks.
First Love
" Oh gosh! Look! It's Aaron," my best friend,
Ally, said as she nudged me excitedly. Aaron,
as usual, calm and composed, walked past
us without even a glance.
129
As usual, I had to do the assignment with Aaron. This time, we decided to work at his
place since he said he had all the necessary materials there.
Soon, we were busily poring over our assignment. At the end of the day, after having
completed our task, I was invited by his mother to stay for dinner. 1 gratefully accepted her
offer as 1 was really starving and exhausted after a hard day's work.
While waiting for dinner, 1 started talking to Aaron. He was not as cold as 1 thought
him out to be. Being straightforward, l asked him why he was always rather reserved.
I thought he probably trusted me enough to confide in me. He started opening up and
related many of his unhappy childhood memories to me. I then understood him better
and realized he was not that bad after all. Since then, we began to be more than friends
and often met up for a chat whenever we were free. 1 guess one thing led to another
and we started to have feelings for each other. We realized soon afterwards that, for the
first time in our lives, we were in love.
But fate was not on our side. Aaron's family had to return to England to attend to
some family business. That ended our relationship prematurely. We had only just begun
and our relationship had to be nipped in the bud.
On the day of Aaron's departure, we hugged each other tightly and cried for what
seemed like ages. We could not bear to leave each other and could not imagine what
life would be like after we separated.
It has been a year since he left. We have promised to keep in touch with each other
but I suppose we have our own lives to live and it is hard to maintain a relationship
over such a long distance. I would probably never forget Aaron because he was
after all my first love.

The sweet memories of that wonderful time keep coming back to me. I can still
remember the days when we caught a movie together, shared a meal and took a stroll on
the sandy beach. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of how she had left me.
I first saw Teri in the campus library She was sitting on the couch reading a book.
1 would not say she was pretty but she was not bad looking either. It was her eyes
that attracted me the most. She had those big round eyes one would find on a baby girl
and they looked so innocent, especially when she fixed them on me. What a girl, I thought.
One day, I had written a note asking her if we could be friends. I had asked the librarian
to pass it to her. Later that afternoon, she came up to me in the cafeteria and said 'hello'.
We began to talk.
130
Within a few weeks, we became very good friends.
We would study together during weekends and have lunch
together. I began to know more about her. She was an
orphan and had always been in the care of her
widowed uncle.
One day, I a s k e d if s h e wanted to go
to the m o v i e s with me and s h e a g r e e d .
From then on, we began our season of romance.
She would write sweet nothings and drop them
into my bag and I would occasionally give her
some flowers or small gifts. We ended each day
by saying good night over the phone. During the
weekends, we would go to the beach in the evening
and sit on the sand. She liked the stars and
we would lie on the sand, look at the stars and chat.
We talked about everything, from schoolwork to our
childhood and even our future.
There was once when I went to her house on her birthday. She was then at the office.
With the help of the key that was under the mat, I got into the flat and started to decorate
her room with pictures of us and big h e a r t - s h a p e d p o s t e r s with the w o r d s ,
"Happy Birthday". The present was placed on her bed. It was a ring. When she came
home, she was moved to tears. She saw the ring and told me to put it on her finger.
We got registered the very next day
Then something happened that destroyed everything. I could still remember the date
clearly: it was the 16th of June. Teri had suddenly fainted. She was taken to the hospital
immediately. Doctors said that she had contracted a disease that was very rare.
It had caused the brain to fail. No cure was available. I cried bitterly when I heard the
news. How could this be? Why can't the person be me? Why must it be Teri?
Six months later, Teri was still in a coma. Her uncle decided to take her off the life
support machine.
It has been five years since Teri died. I still cannot forget her and the wonderful times
we once had together.
131
earlier and the entire world was jubilant. Whether we had
seen the last of the aliens was of course still an unanswered
question.
"Do you think there are any survivors? " Jack half whispered
as he edged closer to the gaping entrance of the craft.
He then took a peek inside and froze. In a moment, his
screams pierced the still night air. From my vantage
point, I could s e e something glinting inside the craft.
An illuminating flash of lightning in the heavens enabled me
to see four tentacles from within reaching out to grab a horrified Jack and pull him inside.
I watched helplessly as he struggled to free himself from the grip but it was useless. I was
horrified to see him being swallowed into the yawning and cavernous spacecraft.
Petrified, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I could still hear Jack's cries but was
determined to keep going. I knew I was no match for the monster. Finally when the noise
subsided I came to a halt. It had begun to drizzle.
Huffing, I looked about. Shadowy trees surrounded me, offering no solace. Besides
my own breathing and the patter of rain, I could hear nothing. The rain increased in
intensity. Visibility diminished rapidly. I was startled when I heard the rustling of leaves
behind me. I whirled around and scanned the undergrowth. Nothing. My heart started to
beat at a frightening pace.
Then I had the shock of my life. A long black claw landed on and scarred my left
cheek, drawing blood. Pushing the creature away I started to run but soon slipped and fell
in a heap, thanks to the slippery ground. Groggy with the impact, I looked in the direction
of the approaching footfalls. In spite of the deluge, I managed to spot a large diamond
shaped head and a thin torso closing in on me. The body was jet-black in color and four
octopus-like tentacles, each about four feet long, extended from its body. Before I knew it,
it wrapped its steely tentacles around me. Two cold, unblinking eyes stared at me as I
struggled to break free.
The harder I tried, the more tightly it held me. Frantically I reached for my Swiss Army
Knife which was hanging loosely from my belt. I started to stab it with as much violence as
I could muster. Its tentacles continued to tighten their grip. I repeatedly thrust the blade
into the creature in desperation, half awaiting the inevitable. I was quickly running out of
132
breath and feeling spasms of pain. Suddenly, the tentacles got limp and my attacker
collapsed. Silent stillness followed.
The creature lay motionlessly on the soggy earth. I picked myself up and kicked
the body of the lifeless alien. 1 noticed that the knife had plunged between its eyes. It had
to be where the alien's nerve center was. By chance, 1 had hit the right spot!
I turned to find myself facing a uniformed policeman. Nodding, I fell on his shoulders in
relief.
Later, I learnt that it was Jack's screams that had alerted the police. They managed
to get to the spacecraft rather quickly and before long, a search team was out on my
trail. The alien's body and the remains of the flying saucer were later taken to the SETl
laboratories in the United States for research. As a result of all this, I had become a
celebrity. My picture was in the papers, the local television and even CNN. As for my best
friend Jack, he was not to be found.

Tragedy at
Denver International Airport
At 12.32 p.m. local time, regular television programming was interrupted by a 'Breaking
News' report. Curious, I increased the volume of my Panasonic television. The screen
displayed the photograph of a United Airlines airliner. The face of the newscaster,
Terry Brown, came on the screen.
As the passenger list was being displayed, I saw my mother's name. I closed my
eyes and did a double take, just to make sure that I was not hallucinating. Indeed I
w a s not, for as sure as day,
her name was there to stay.
Frantically, I r e a c h e d for
the p h o n e and dialed my
mother's number. Nobody
answered. Panicked and
distressed, I rushed to my car
and s p e d off to Denver
International Airport s o m e 3
kilometers north.
133
Apparently, the news had reached far and wide. The crowd at the airport was proof of
that. I made my way to the Information Counter and told the lady about my problem.
She directed me to the United Airlines terminal that was close by. As I made my way there,
I saw the ill-fated plane sitting on the runway in the distance, a twisted clump of metal.
"Nobody could have survived that," I conceded. "Not even Paula Simone."
Upon reaching my destination, l realized that a large group of people had already
gathered. Most were teary-eyed as they just stood there, overcome with grief. A few
airline officials were bustling about. Some were engaged in patient conversation with
bereaved and sometimes irate relatives of those on board the ill-fated flight.
A pang of regret, sadness and nervousness shot through me as 1 again read the name
of my mother on the overhead screen. Although l was not quite sure of her presence on
the plane, 1 was preparing myself to accept that possibility. I staggered and slumped onto
a cushioned chair in despair. If only I had told her how much 1 loved her. If only ...
Blinking back tears, 1 watched the monitor in dismay, looking at the details of the
passengers. Yes, Paula Simone's address was that of my mother! 1 felt like someone had
punched me hard in the face. As my last glimmer of hope faded away I suddenly broke
into sporadic sobs. The floodgates of sorrow had suddenly burst open.
Not knowing what else to do, I slid into my car and drove home. I reached my house
shortly afterwards. As 1 opened the door, the silence of the house was shattered. It was
the shrill and persistent ringing of the telephone.
This had better be an important call because I was in no mood for casual conversation.
I picked up the receiver and mumbled something in a daze, but when I heard the voice on
the line, I gasped.
" Hello my child. I know what you are thinking. Don't worry. I am safe. By God's grace,
I have missed the plane. Little had I known this would happen -"
Elated, I cried warm tears of joy. Never was there a sweeter sound in the world, balm
to my troubled spirit. My happiness knew no bounds. After all, that person w a s
my mother.

Ke Mercu Kejayaan Lukisan Hidup
Bayangkan Mulanya,
Kita dibawa arus kegelapan Dari zaman leluhur
Dalam kehidupan Tanpa pendidikan...
Meraba-raba bagaikan Titisan peluh hasilnya
Si buta kehilangan Timbunan kerja harian
Tanpa mengenal haluan Mencari sesuap nasi
Dan pendirian Demi meneruskan keturunan...
Hingga terjerumus ke badai
Kemodenan Hasilnya,
Yang berbau maksiat, gejala Lahir silaturahim sebuah keluarga
Penipuan dan bermacam penyakit Dunia kemodenan
Tukaran fungsi minda
Renungkan Akal diutamakan
Jika anak-anak kita Tanpa ia, entahlah....
Dibesarkan tanpa mengenal
Alif, ba ta jauh sekali Dalam hati kecilku
Hingga ditertawakan bangsa-bangsa Lama mengidamkan kesenangan
Lain yang mengherdik Sungguhnya ada....
Anak Melayu lembab Teringin sekali melihat si anak
Dan hilaian tawa mereka masih Menggengam segulung sijil
Kedengaran hingga kini Dirantai reben merah
Jasa budinya ingin dibalas
Ketahuilah
Ilmu ibarat pelita Buktikanlah,
Menyinari hakikat Biar ajal kelak
Daripada tipu helah dunia Jasad ditinggalkan
Mendorong anak-anak bangsa Nama jadi sebutan
Ke mercu kejayaan
Menginsafi yang jahil
Mengiktirafkan bangsa Suzana Kosnan 4N2
Memajukan dunia
Sedangkan nabi
Seorang mulia yang
Tiada membuat kesilapan
Belajar
Apakah lagi kita umatnya
Yang terlalu kerap tersilap
Ilmu ibarat mutiara
Nilainya tiada terkira
Sehinggakan
Tiada ilmu tiada masyarakat
Tanpa bahasa siapalah bangsa

Sahabat Pantun
Kehadiranmu sehangat mentari Computer
Sentuhanmu dingin bak salji
Aku bersyukur ke atas Illahi Komputer kini sungguh canggih,
Kerna dipertemukan denganmu yang Di sekolah ada pejabat juga;
satu Ada yang telah mula ketagih,
Dengan bermain komputer sahaja.
Kau teguh di sisi
Bagaikan si matahari Lebah sedang membuat sarang,
Menyinar kegelapan Sarang dibuat dengan gigih;
Tanpa sokonganmu
Rebahlah diri ini Kegunaan CD-ROM memanglah wajar,
Tanpa gurauanmu Ada Matematik dan ada Melayu;
Memudahkan cara menimba ilmu.
Kaulah pertama
Kaulah sahabat Pergi ke sana menaiki sampan;
Pertalian ini tidak akan tergugat Tetapi juga melalaikan remaja;
Inilah yang dinamakan persahabatan. Boleh mendapat banyak kenalan,
Baik Melayu mahupun Cina.

Berinteraksi dengan rakan sebaya,
Internet terdapat banyak infomasi,
Tetapi juga mendatangkan bahaya.

Cherrina
begitu kukuh. Jam dinding menunjukkan hampir pukul sebelas malam. A k u merenung
jauh. Angin m a l a m membelai mesra rambutku. Suasanan di luar begitu suram, sesuram
hatiku di saat itu. Fikiranku terus melayang, terkenang kembali saat-saat manis bersama
kakakku, Cherrina. Cherrina merupakan anak tunggal di dalam keluarganya. Ketika umurnya
pasaran bagaikan pisang g o r e n g panas. Filem-filem y a n g dibintangi juga mendapat
sambutan hangat daripada penggemar-penggemar filem. Tatkala itu, tidak hairanlah jika
wajahnya sering menghiasi dada-dada akhbar dan majalah-majalah setempat. N a m u n
Setiap lagu-
lagunya mengandungi pengajaran sama ada tersurat m a h u p u n tersirat.
A k u d a n Cherrina b a n y a k m e n g h a b i s k a n masa
bersama. Di masa lapangnya, kami sering ke taman
riadah bermain badminton, hoki dan macam-macam
lagi. Setidak-tidaknya, kami pasti akan berlegar-legar
di pusat-pusat membeli-belah dan m e r a m b u dengan
tidak t e n t u a r a h n y a . Kata o r a n g , k a m i u m p a m a
belangkas y a n g asyik berkepit sahaja. Pernah juga
b e b e r a p a kali aku diajaknya keluar bersama-sama
dengan Yusry. Tetapi, ajakan itu selalu sahaja aku tolak
kerana tidak m a h u 'mengacau daun'. A k u tidak pernah
bayangkan hidup tanpa Cherrina di sampingku. Ada
137
walaupun hanya seminggu, rasanya setahun lamanya.
Wajahnya pula kelihatan pucat sementara selera makannya semakin
tertutup, membuatkan badannya teramat susut. Sudah berapa kali aku cuba bertanya
tentang kesihatanya.
Cherrina rebah ketika sedang membuat persembahan.
Kami sekeluarga bergegas ke hospital.
Setibanya di hospital, Yusry mengatakan bahawa kakakku masih lagi berada di wad
kecemasan. Kami menanti dengan penuh debaran. Apabila doktor keluar daripada wad
tersebut, kami berlari mendapatkan doktor itu. Namun, beliau hanya ingin berbicara dengan
mama dan papa di pejabatnya. Aku semakin gementar. Yusry kelihatan mundar-mandir
tak tentu halanya.
"Mama, Papa, kenapa dengan kakak? Apa doktor kata tadi? Cakaplah mama, papa.
bilik doktor. Aku inginkan kepastian sambil menarik-narik lengan baju mama.
Muka mama kelihatan pucat, badannya longlai. Papa kelihatan tenang sahaja. Namun
Dua tiga hari lagi sihatlah dia, ia
sayang", kata papa sambil mengurut-ngurut rambutku.
Tetapi setelah
Yusry memberi kata-kata yang sama, kebimbanganku mulai reda. Kami tidak dibenarkan
melihat kakak. Kakak perlu banyak berehat kata doktor. Kami pun pulang. Setibanya di
rumah, papa memapah mama ke bilik. Aku kasihan melihat mama. Papa menyuruhku
masuk ke bilik dan berehat.
Aku meluru masuk ke bilikku. Terasa haus pula tekakku. Aku pun keluar untuk
mendapatkan air.
"Leukimia bang..
sebesar ruang tamu, terdapat
sebuah kolam kecil. Ikan-ikan
berwarna-warni dapat kelihatan
dan sekali-sekala, air akan
terpancut keluar dari mulut
sebuah tugu. Lampu di bilik
itu pula b e r w a r n a biru
menyebabkan bilik itu kelihatan
biru daripada sinaran cahaya.
139
Dalam mahligai impianku ini terdapat empat bilik. Sebuah daripadanya menpunyai
berandah yang menghadap ke lautan yang luas. Dari berandah inilah dapat kulihat terbitnya
matahari dan langit yang kebiru-biruan. Apabila matahari terbenam, pandangan itu juga
sungguh menakjubkan.
baru disepuh.
"Kalau bukan aku, siapa lagi?
koyongnya, aku teringat sesuatu... Pernah suatu masa dahulu aku mengajak Nurul datang
Aku bingung! Betulkah itu
Nuruljannah yang pernah aku kenali dulu? Aku teramat sekali ingin ke bilik Nurul...tetapi
aku ...aku berasa takut. Entahlah mengapa. Tetapi aku ingin cuba melupakan segala-
galanya.
gading dilarik memberikan senyuman tawar, sambil dia berkata-kata, "Sofia, terimalah rantai
ini sebagai tanda persahabatan kita."

Keupayaan Singapura Menjadi
Negara Yang Menarik Minat
Pelancong
Setiap tahun, beribu-ribu pelancong melancong ke Singapura. Mereka melancong ke
sini kerana Singapura m e m p u n y a i reputasi sebagai salah sebuah negeri di Asia y a n g agak
bersih dan m e m p u n y a i banyak tempat rekreasi.
Singapura. Apabila pelancong datang dan mereka dapati jangka masa tinggal y a n g
m e n g g e m b i r a k a n , mereka akan m e n g g a l a k a n k a w a n mereka s u p a y a m e l a n c o n g k e
Singapura.
Aku merenung jauh menyaksikan awan-gemawan menelan cahaya mentari, menunjukkan
suasana senja.
"Zura dah lama sampai?" Soal Nidzam sambil melemparkan senyumannya yang tidak
gagal menampilkan lesung pipitnya itu. Aku tersenyum menikmati wajah yang tampan itu.
143
"Baru juga, Zam," jawabku dengan mesra. Sejurus kemudian beliau mempelawaku
"Zam, sebenarnya...Zura ingin menghentikan perhubungan kita.
menghentikan segala kata-kataku.
"Apa semua ni, Zura? Semudah itu sahaja? Menjalinkan hubungan selama tujuh tahun
dan begitu mudah Zura ingin menghancurkannya kerana seorang insan lain?" soal Nidzam.
"Zam tak faham persaan Zura. Zura ingin hidup mulakan hidup baru. Zura tak boleh
meneruskan hubungan kita. Jangan paksa Zura, Zam. Bertepuk sebelah tangan takkan
berbunyi. Maafkan Zura, Zam," aku meneruskan.
Sejurus
kemudian, aku mengangkat gagang telefon untuk mengucapkan salam perpisahan terakhir
kepada teman karibku, Surya.
"Hello. Surya. Zura di sini. Aku akan berangkat pagi esok. Aku harap segala kesilapanku
akan kau maafkan. Hanya kau saja yang tahu tentang penyakitku, Surya," aku berkata
dalam tangisan.
"Kau insan yang baik, Zura. Aku akan selalu mendoakan kepulanganmu. Terima kasih
Surya.
144
telah ku sayangi dan masih menyayangi. Pada mulanya, aku gembira melihat wajahnya
tetapi malangnya belaiu berpegang erat bersama Surya. Air mata tidak mampu aku hindari
dari mengalir.
'Zura, maafkan Nidzam. Kalau Zam tahu keadaan sebenar takkan Zam teruskan
pertunangan ini dengan Surya," aku mendengar penjelasannya.
"Zura, maafkan Surya kerana melalukan semua ini. Aku terlambat memberitahu Nidzam
tentang keadaanmu," jelas Surya.
"Aku senang atas kebahagian yang kamu berdua kecapi. Tahniah."
memberitahu Nidzam tentang keadaanku.
145
ke hospital. Ayah telah diberitahu dengan segera. Dia juga dalam
perjalanan ke sana. Melihat ibu masih menitiskan air matanya
walaupun aku telah memujuknya berulang-ulang kali, aku terbayang-
bayang bagaimana pula perasaan ayah bila tiba di hospital kelak.
"Moga kita bertemu suatu hari nanti, abang," bisik hati kecilku.
menghantar maklumat-maklumat penting kepada s e s e b u a h
