QUESTION 3
Objective: Predicting reaction direction and calculating equilibrium concentrations.

In one experiment, the chemist mixed 1.72 mol SO2, 0.66 mol O2 and 0.24 mol SO3 in 2.0 L
flask at 500 ºC. At this temperature, the Kc= 0.036.
SO2(g) + O2(g) ⇌ SO3(g)

i) Balance the reaction.

ii) Write the equilibrium expression of the above reaction.
iii) Predict the direction will the reaction proceed to reach equilibrium.
iv) If [SO2] = 0.90 M at equilibrium, calculate the equilibrium concentration of other
substances.

QUESTION 4
Objective: Predicting the effect of concentration/temperature/pressure/volume on the
equilibrium position.
One way of preparing hydrogen is by the decomposition of water.

2H2O(g) ⇌ 2H2(g) + O2(g) ΔHº = 484 kJ

i) Predict the decomposition of water will be favorable at high or low temperatures. Explain
your answer.
ii) Determine whether the decomposition of water is a physical or chemical change. Explain
your answer.

QUESTION 6
Objective: Preparing a buffer solution by showing their calculation.
Calculate the volume of glacial acetic acid (d= 1.06 g/mL, mw: 60.05 g/mol) and weight of
potassium acetate (mw: 98.14 g/mol) required to prepare 5 L of 0.2 M acetate buffer with pH=
5.0, pKa= 4.77. Explain how you are going to prepare the buffer.
