u This day is observed on 2nd December
every year in remembrance of the people
who passed away in the Bhopal Gas
Tragedy, 1984.

u The Bhopal Gas Tragedy took place in


Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on 2nd and 3rd
December, 1984. This devastating chemical
leak was said to be one of the worst
industrial disasters of all time.

u Approximately 45 tons of methyl isocyanate


escaped from an insecticide plant from the
Union Carbide Corporation’s Indian

Arshia Sattar Conferred With French Honour/अ"श$या स)ार को

u Renowned author and translator Arshia Sattar has added another feather to her
cap, being honored with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the
French government.

u Notable among her works are translations of epics like


the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, as well as tales from Kathasaritsagara.

u “The Mahabharata for Children” earning her the Sahitya Akademi Prize for
Children’s Literature in 2022.

u Previous recipients of the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters include
luminaries like Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Richa Chadha, Raghu Rai,
Ebrahim Alkazi, Habib Tanveer, and Upamanyu Chatterjee.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Kissinger passed

Henry Kissinger, former United States
Secretary of State and Nobel Peace Prize
winner, died aged 100.

Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace


Prize in 1973 for his role in the Paris Peace
Accords.

Kissinger was appointed National Security


Advisor in 1969, and he became Secretary of
State in 1973. He held this position until 1977.

u HDFC Life, one of India’s leading insurers, has officially set a new
Guinness World Records title for creating the largest online selfie
mosaic made from 19,097 photos clicked by individuals for the
‘Insure India’ campaign.

u HDFC Life launched the ‘Insure India’ campaign with the aim of
raising awareness about the significance of life insurance
among the Indian population.

u HDFC Life’s larger industry vision, aiming to ensure ‘Life insurance


for all‘ by the year 2047.
Modi Govt Plans 7 New Bills For Winter Session
Narendra Modi government planning to introduce seven new
Bills alongside addressing 11 pending bills.

The Winter Session of Parliament begins on December 4 and will


continue till December 22.

The proposed legislations cover a diverse range of topics, from


establishing a Central Tribal University in Telangana to providing
women’s quota in Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry
Assemblies.

Central University (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

This move reflects the government’s commitment to education


and inclusivity.
u Another noteworthy initiative is The Jammu and Kashmir
Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to
implement a 33% quota for women in the Jammu and Kashmir
Assembly

u The government also plans to bring a bill to increase the strength


of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly from 107 to 114.

u The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aims


to provide a 33% women’s quota in the Puducherry Assembly.
The National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions)
Second Amendment Bill, 2023, seeks to extend the validity of
existing laws, offering protection against punitive action for
certain forms of unauthorized development in the national
capital.

In an effort to enhance safety regulations, the Boilers Bill, 2023, will


revisit a 1923 law related to the safety of life and property.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha


Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill that seek to replace the
Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the
Indian Evidence Act respectively have also been listed for
consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha.

Three Anti-Submarine Warfare Ships For Indian Navy Launched

u CSL, Kochi, launched the first three ships of the Indian Navy's
ASW Shallow Water Craft project – Mahe, Malva, and Mangrol.

u The ships were launched with invocations of the Atharvaveda.

u The contract for the construction of eight ASW SWC ships


between the Ministry of Defense and Cochin Shipyard Limited
was signed on 30 April 2019.
u The ASW SWC ships are 78 meters long and have a
displacement of approximately 900 tonnes with a maximum
speed of 25 knots.

u The simultaneous launch of three ships of the same class


highlights Indian progress in indigenous shipbuilding towards
'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.

the Expo 2030 world fair.

This will be a big event to be held in the


Gulf countries after the Football World
Cup in Qatar last year.

Bengaluru to Get India’s Largest Circular Railway: 287-km

u Bengaluru plans to establish a 287-km circular railway, with the
aim of becoming the country's largest suburban network by
potentially surpassing Chennai's 235.5-km circular railway.

u Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed this ambitious


project

u Vaishnaw also highlighted the significance of the Bengaluru


suburban project, which is being implemented by the Rail
Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Ltd. (K-RIDE),
a joint venture established by the Karnataka government (51
percent share) and the Ministry of Railways (49 percent).
Fattah 2 : Hypersonic Weapon
Iran recently unveiled its new and improved hypersonic
weapon, the Fattah-2.

Fattah 2 means conqueror in Farsi, is a hypersonic ballistic


missile.

It was developed by Iran. It is a new version of its first


domestically made hypersonic ballistic missile named
‘Fattah’.

It uses a liquid-fuel rocket propellant.

The precision-guided two-stage missile can hit targets


within a range of 1500 kilometres with a velocity of Mach
15 (fifteen times the speed of sound i.e., 18522 km/hr).
u It can make quick turns to avoid defence systems.

u Hypersonic Missile is a weapon system that flies at least at the


speed of Mac 5, i.e., five times the speed of sound.

u These missiles are extremely fast and far harder for surface-to-air
missile defence systems to target.
Golan Heights : India vote In UN General Assembly
India has voted in favour of a draft
resolution in the UN General
Assembly that expressed deep
concern over Israel not withdrawing
from the Golan Heights.
