1 Overview
This printer is a tandem type LED electrophotographic A3 color page printer having four tandemly
arranged color image drum cartridges in it.
The printer converts single-color images extracted from original computer text and graphics images
into optical pulses to write them on the surfaces of its optical drums. Dry toner in the printer
selectively adheres to, and forms toner images on, the surfaces. After the toner images on the drums
are directly transferred to paper, the fuser of the printer fuses the toner images into place for the toner
images to be printed on the printer.
The light sources of this printer are light-emitting diode (LED) arrays.
1.1 Scope of Application
Terms
The process control part controls the printing operations performed by the
electrophotographic process of the printer. The PUCU performs the control of the entire
functions of the printer, such as issuing the printer’s internal timing signals to monitor the
printer’s paper path status to print the images.
(4) SEF (Short Edge Feed) and LEF (Long Edge Feed)
The SEF of this printer means that the printer feeds paper in portrait orientation, and its LEF
means that it feeds paper in landscape orientation.

sizes and types supported by the standard auto feeder tray (the 1st tray) of the printer. The
minimum paper size supported by the MPT is 64 x 90 mm in SEF orientation. The MPT
can be loaded with 100 sheets of standard paper (70 kg, 82 g/m2) (or 10-mm thick or thinner
other-than-that paper). The MPT has no paper out sensors, paper amount indicators,
paper near-end sensors or auto paper size detection equipment.
Banner paper (Width: 210mm, 297mm, Length:431.8mm~1320.8mm, Thickness:71~110kg
(83~128g/m2) should be fed page by page.
Note 1: Paper that has been stored in an appropriate temperature and humidity should be
used for the MPT.
Note 2: The manual-feed guide of the MPT should be adjusted so as that there is no space
between it and the paper for which it is used, and should not be so strongly pressed
against the paper as to curve the paper.
Note 3: More than one sheet of paper should be loaded in the MPT so as not to lie beyond
the arrow () marked on the manual-feed guide of the MPT.
Note 4: The MPT should not be loaded with paper sheets different in size, quality or weight
at a time.
Note 5: Before paper is added to the MPT, paper should be removed from the tray, and
thoroughly jogged together with the paper. Paper added to the MPT should be
loaded together with paper remaining in the tray.
Note 6: Warps of postcards or envelopes can cause improper insertion of them from the
MPT. Non-warped postcards should be used for the MPT. Warping of postcards
and envelopes should be corrected to within 2 mm to be used for the MPT.
Note 7: JIS Chou #3, Kaku #3 and envelopes should be loaded in LEF orientation in the
MPT, with their flaps unfolded. JIS Kaku #2, Kaku #3 and C4 envelopes should be
loaded in SEF orientation in it, with their flaps unfolded. Other envelopes should
be loaded in LEF orientation in it, with their flaps strongly folded so as not to bulge.
Note 8: Envelopes with folds on its glued joint(s) fed last from the MPT may be inserted
improperly from the MPT. Such folds should be corrected before the envelopes
are used for the MPT.
Note 9: Anything except paper should not be put on the MPT, and the MPT should not be
pressed, or applied with forced force, from above.
Note 10: The transparencies should be printed the A4 SEF and fed page by page.

6 Fonts
6.1 PCL Roman Font
6.1.1 Font Typs
The font is roughly divided into two types: Bitmap Font and Scalable Font (Outline Font).
(1) Bitmap Font
Bitmap Font is a character image that is digitized as is, into a bitmap pattern.
When enlarged, it looks jagged at the curves.
Portrait fonts can be rotated 90 degrees. In other words, Portrait, Landscape,
Reverse Portrait, and Reverse Landscape can be printed using the same character
pattern.
(2) Scalable Font
Scalable Font is a result of digitizing the coordinate positions of the outline
of a character image based on a certain mathematical formula.
A character image is generated by converting a scalable font to a bit-mapped
Pattern by the dedicated rasterizer before printing.
Scalable fonts, as their name suggests, can be freely enlarged/reduced
vertically or horizontally, and the curves do not look jagged. They can be
rotated at any angles and also flipped (mirror imaged).
Rasterization requires a longer processing time; thus, the characters converted
to bitmapped patterns are registered in the Cache memory.
6.1.2 Rasterizer
The rasterizer is a module that reads scalable font data and generates a bit-mapped pattern or
outline information according to the parameters such as scaling rates, rotational angles, etc. This
device uses Monotype Imaging-made UFST 5.0.
* Different versions of Font Rasterizer are used by PostScript Emulation and the other PDLs.
Bit-mapped patterns, generated by the rasterizer, are registered in the cache, and when the same
character of the same attributes is used next time, its corresponding bit-mapped pattern is copied
from the cache without using the raterizer. It not only registers scalable fonts but also stores the
bitmap fonts that are modified, for example, rotated.

And, they cannot be selected by Pitch or Point, rather selected by Symbol Set Code.
For Landscape, Reverse Portrait, and Reverse Landscape orientations, Portrait fonts are rotated
