Topic: Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable

Sub-topic: Differentiates between equations and inequalities.

OBJECTIVES
a Differentiate equations from inequalities
b. Determine whether a mathematical sentence is an equation or an
inequalities
c. Apply the concepts of equations and inequalities in real life situations.

Equation – a mathematical sentence indicating that two expressions are equal. The symbol
“ = “ is used to denote equality.
Inequality – a mathematical sentence indicating that two expressions are not equal. The
relation symbols <, >, ≤, ≥, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ≠ are used to denote inequality.

Directions: : Tell whether the given is an equation or an inequality. Choose for

equation and choose if it is inequality .

1. 12 =12 6. x- 4 > 9
2. -5 < 5 7. x - 10 ≠ x +10
3. (8x+4) – 5 ≥ 8𝑥(4 − 5) 8. ab > a+b
4. 3x – 9 = 6 9. 7(7) = 7²
5. 0 > -3 10. X ≥ 5

Directions: Place the symbol <, >, or = inside the heart to make each
sentence true.

1. 10 - 10 6. 3+2 2+3
2. 5³ 3(5) 7. (12 – 8) + 9 12 (-8+9)

3. -3 + 4² 5² - 12 8. 3 (-2) -2(3)

4. 9 + (- 5) 2² 9. 3(x+4) 3x+4

5. (5 + 4) 2 5(4 + 2) 10. 6(3) 24

Directions: Determine whether each of the following is an equation or an

inequality.

1. 2x = 12 6.3(5x-7) ≤ 24

2. 5xy – 3 = 27 7. 3xy + 6 ≥ 56

3. x+4 = 4 + x 8.-4x(x-2) = -60

4. 2(x+3) < 15 9.3x² - 7x ≠ 16

𝑥 2 3
5. -8 > 5 10 8 + 4 = 1

A. Directions: Tell whether the given is an equation or an inequality.

1. x>24 6.(2+5)9 =2(5+9)

2. 2x+ 6 = 10 7.5(x+4) > x +4
3. 3(3)≤ 9 8.x + 3x = 8
4. 22 – x > 12 9.4x + 2x ≥ 7𝑥 − 𝑥
6𝑥
5. 6x - 8 = 22 10. 2 = 8𝑥 − 5𝑥
