• Explain the meaning of human rights


• Highlight the rights of a citizen of a country
• Mention forms of human rights abuse
• State the effects of human rights abuse
• Enumerate ways of preventing human rights abuse

MEANING OF HUMAN RIGHTS:


Human Rights are the benefits and privileges which one is entitled to enjoy or
receive as a bona-fide member of the country.

RIGHTS OF A CITIZEN OF A COUNTRY: The following are rights and


privileges of citizens of a country.

• Right to life
• Right to dignity of human person
• Right to personal liberty
• Right to fair hearing
• Right to private and family life
• Right to freedom of movement
• Right to education
• Right to use of social amenities provided by government
• Right to freedom of thought

FORMS OF HUMAN RIGHT ABUSE: Human rights can be abused in the


following ways
• Prevention of citizen from joining any religion of his/her choice
• Wrong arrest and detention of citizens
• Deprivation of eligible voters from voting
• Denying of citizens from legal services (fair hearing in court)
• Torture and inhuman treatment of law enforcement agencies like police,
Army, Navy, Customs, EFCC, ICPC etc.

EFFECTS OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE: The following could be the effects of


human rights abuse

• It leads to the inclusion of wrong people in government


• It brings about rebelling or revolting against the government in power
• It will result to the creation of political, social and economic instability in
the country.
• There will be destruction of lives and properties
• It Puts the government in a bad-light
• It brings fear to the citizens of the nation (Fear of the unknown)
• Relocation of citizens to other countries

WAYS OF PREVENTING HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE: The following ways can be


useful in the prevention of Human rights abuse

• There should be the conduction of Mass Education where every one will
be enlightened or thought about the subject-matter

• Rule of law: Everyone should adhere strictly to the observation of the


rule of law.

• Independent Judiciary: The judiciary should be independent and be free


from external interference.

• Human Rights Activist: The activities of some human rights organization


and personnels should be encouraged so as to put a stop to the menace

• Entrenchment of fundamental human rights in the constitution: The


rights of humans should be entrenched and included in the constitution.

• Legal aids: There should be provision of legal aids to the less privilege who
may not be able to speak for or fight for their rights.

• Democracy: The practices and principles of democracy should be highly


upheld.
