HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Drafted from boys born in 1926 when the Waffen SS was facing a serious shortage of manpower, the 12th SS division was
one the few Panzer divisions close to the D-Day beaches early in June. About 20.000 strong at the beginning of the
Normandy campaign it took so much casualties that by the time the Allies had liberated Caen and started to surround the
germans around Falaise it was then down to 500 combat ready grenadiers. Under the command of Standartenfurher Kurt
"panzer" Meyer (once the commander of the SS LAH recon unit) the 12th SS was split into 2 Kampfgruppen led by Krause
and Waldmuller who took holding positions around Perrières and Epaney with the mission to slow down the Canadian and
Polish troops coming down the road from Caen. Falaise was as good as lost nevertheless every hour counted for the
Germans retreating East toward the river Seine. Meanwhile the Canadians from the South Saskatchewan supported by the
Fusiliers Sherbrook's Shermans were well decided to clear the North-West approaches of Falaise (know as "Les maisons
blanches) from the "babies division"...

Aftermath

Even with all the luck the Kamfgruppe ad-hoc rush and organized around
Falaise could have done, the tenacity of the Canadian troops spoil the front
line of the Krause and Prinz Kamfgruppen. It was infiltrated in many areas,
in some points even over 2 km deep. In the evening, almost 6 hours after the
initial lauch of the Canadian pincer to Falaise, the I Korps reported to the
5 Panzerarmme that the existing main line of resistance could no longer be
Held. In the course of the night, the Korps would withdraw to a southern
position. Only weak forces were still available for the continued defense of
the sector on both side of Falaise. The commander of the II. Panzerabteilung,
holder of the knight's Cross Sturmbannführere Karl-Heinz Prinz was killed
near Torps, 2 km west of Soulagny.
