Reading
Read the text and answer the questions. Write M (for Maria) and G (for Grace).

Women at work
People used to think some jobs were for men and some jobs were for women. Now, anyone can do
any job they want. Maria and Grace are two women doing just that.
Maria is a boom operator, it’s a type of sound engineer. She works on a television set and uses
microphones and sound equipment. Maria loves her job and gets to meet many famous actors, but
says it is not easy because there’s only one other woman on her team. At first, the rest of the team
thought she was an actor so they didn’t talk to her. On top of that, some of them didn’t give her
opportunities to show them she could do the job. When they finally did, Maria taught them some
new ways to do things, and they helped her understand the older equipment. Today, she is the best
one on the team.
Grace is a driving instructor. Her students love her because she is calm and caring, and she enjoys
helping people pass their driving test. However, Grace didn’t always like cars. She used to ride her
bike everywhere, but when she got her first job after university, she realised it was too far to cycle.
And public transport didn’t go to that part of her town. She was determined to get her licence and
had an amazing instructor, who was a woman. The instructor was so good that Grace decided she
wanted to do the same job.

Who …
1 works with popular people in entertainment?
2 works mostly with men?
3 likes working with customers?
4 took a job doing something she wasn’t interested in before?
5 found it difficult at first to get people to accept her in her job?
