Why is it called the Dead Sea?

Despite its name, the Dead Sea is actually not a sea, but a hypersaline lake. Why is it called the
Dead Sea? Because no life forms (plants or living creatures) could survive in its waters, although it does
contain microbial life.

Why do humans float in the dead sea?

1. Due to the high salinity of the Dead Sea.

- The Dead Sea is the most saline lake in the world. The salinity is due to the accumulation of
salt flowing into it from different water bodies and due to the lack of a drainage system the
salt gets deposited there.
- The Dead Sea has a salinity of 34 percent while Earth's oceans have an average salinity of 3.5
percent.
- The higher the salt, the greater in density the water becomes.
- The density of water is the weight of the water per its unit volume.
- Because a person’s body weight is lighter than the density of the saltwater in the Dead Sea,
this increases your buoyancy.
2. Buoyant force is the net upward force on any object in any fluid. If the buoyant force is greater
than the object's weight, the object will rise to the surface and float. If the buoyant force is less
than the object's weight, the object will sink.
- The buoyant force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. The greater the density of
the fluid, the less fluid that is needed to be displaced to have the weight of the object be
supported and to float.
- Buoyant force is directly proportional to the density of the liquid displaced. So, greater the
density of the liquid, greater is the buoyant force due to the liquid.
