 MONUMENTS AND MEMORIES
A STORY OF ISLAMIC HERITAGE
IN 622 CE, when the Prophet Muhammad [SAW]
made his escape from Makkah, the beloved city of
his birth, on his famous Hijrah to Madinah, little did the
world realise how it was going to change.
By 634 CE, a mere two years after the Prophet’s [SAW]
death, the mighty Persian Empire was submitting to
Islam.
The well-known general, Khalid bin Walid, was also
pushing the Romans out of the Levant, and envoys
were travelling as far as China. The historical lesson
is that Islam’s conquests were not merely military, but
also of hearts and minds – culturally, religiously and
intellectually.
Islam was antithetical to its age of brutal power.
Muslim armies and Muslim ambassadors were bound
by honourable rules of engagement, inspired by
a Prophetic example of God-awareness, personal
honesty, mutual respect, compassion and humility.
For when Sayyidina ‘Umar [RA], the second of the Four
Righteous Caliphs, arrived in Jerusalem in 638 CE after
‘Ubaydah bin Jarrah had defeated it, he walked into
the city wearing a tattered robe with 14 patches. And
when Sophronius, the Patriarch, offered the precincts
of the Holy Sepulcher to pray in, Sayyidina ‘Umar [RA]
refused.
The Caliph, a man of insight, said he did not want
Christianity’s biggest monument turned into a mosque.
It was Sayyidina ‘Umar [RA] who penned the ‘Umariyya
Covenant, guaranteeing the rights of non-Muslims on
the payment of the jizya tax. But not only that, asking
where the Jews were, Sayyidina ‘Umar [RA] allowed
them to return to the Holy City for the first time in 500
years. It was this ethos that would set the world alight
– not violence or oppression, but peace and justice.
Historically, Islam would have its internal challenges
– but its pillars would always remain firm – and the
message and the mission would be one of human
development. This development would be witnessed
on a scale never seen before in human history.
Caliph ‘Umar bin ‘Abd al-‘Aziz [620-780 CE]
encouraged education and the collection of Hadith
[Prophetic axioms], and set in motion an astonishing
outburst of intellectual activity that would later spread
to Muslims capitals such as Damascus and Baghdad.
The Greek philosophers and the Latin scholars would
be translated into Arabic by teams commissioned for
that very purpose. From this, arose a God-conscious
civilisation of science, physics, travel, geography,
medicine, astronomy, logic, art, mathematics,
algebra, engineering, invention, architecture,
economics and history.
For instance, Abu Firas would invent the first flying
machine. Ibn Khaldun would define history, Imam
Ghazali psychology, Ibn Battuta travel and Al-
Khwarizmi would conceptualise algorithms. Ibn Sina
would become the medical canon and Ibn Haytham
would invent optic lenses. Two-thirds of observable
stars would enjoy Arabic names.
It is interesting to note that when Baghdad had
street-lights, hospitals, irrigation canals and sewage
reticulation, the kings of Europe could not even sign
their names, and were walking in streets muddied by
refuse and human excrement.
The European renaissance only occurred after the
crusading knights returned from the Middle East,
bringing with them the banking system, proper
standards of hygiene and education. Mediaeval
Christian scholars such as Thomas Aquinas would
study at Muslim universities in Spain.
The rise of the Ottomans across Turkey and Anatolia
in the 15th century would add yet another layer
to Islam’s already rich heritage of the Ummayad,
‘Abbasid and Ayyubid dynasties, as well as the Sahel
empires, the Moghuls of India, Timur of Samarkand
and the Fatimids of Egypt, just to name a few.
Islam would also produce a multitude of heroes:
people ancient and modern, such as Sumaya bint
Khabbat al-Hibshi (Islam’s first martyr), Imam Husayn
[RA], Imam Shamil of Chechnya, Imam Mukhtar of
Libya and Shaykh ‘Izz al-din al-Qassem of Palestine.
Ibn Battuta of Tunis would become one of the
greatest travelers of the age, and the Chinese Muslim
navigator, Xheng He, would set sail with a massive
fleet and navigate the polar regions, the coastline
of Africa and America. Mansa Abu Bakr II of the Mali
Empire would land on the east coast of America in
1311, this all centuries before Diaz, Da Gama and
Columbus.
Islam was born out of diversity. The Prophetic
companions were diverse: from the Arab tribes to
those such as Bilal bin Rabah of Ethiopia, Salman al-
Farsi of Persia, ‘Abdullah bin Salam the former rabbi,
Suhayb the Roman, Mariya al-Qibtiyya the Coptic,
Jaban al-Kurdi the Kurd, Addas the Assyrian slave,
and so many others.
Without doubt, Islam is the world’s biggest growing
intersectional and multicultural faith. This is the
story of its richly textured heritage, a heritage that is
continuously renewing itself. A heritage that is built on
a proud past speeding across the modern skies like a
comet.
