Tenses of Verbs
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What is It

Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences

Using the Perfect Tenses of Verbs
Read the following sentences taken from the short dialogue you have just read.

1. I have finished answering all the activities since yesterday.

2. The pandemic had happened after the Taal volcano erupted.
3. We shall have seen the Taal volcano with our relatives by the end of this pandemic.

The underlined verb in each sentence is in perfect tense. The perfect tense of the verb
shows an action already completed. The word perfect literally means made complete or
completely done. The perfect tense of the verb is formed by the appropriate tense of the verb
to have plus the past participle of the verb.

The present perfect tense shows an action that began in some past time and
continuously happening in the present time. The auxiliary verb has or have is used together
with the past participle of the verb. The time expressions commonly used to denote such
action or condition are since + the time reference and for + the time reference.
TIME EXPRESSION
examples:
The lady has worn her face mask since she entered the bank.

has (for singular subject) + worn (past participle of wear) is used to

indicate the present perfect tense.

TIME EXPRESSION

The children have stayed home for almost a year now.

have (for plural subject) + stayed (past participle of stay) is used to

indicate the present perfect tense.

The past perfect tense shows an action that has been completed before another past
action has begun. It shows which of the two past actions happened first. The auxiliary verb
had together with the past participle of the verb is used to state the first action whereas the
past form of the verb is used to state the second past action. The time expressions before +
the time reference, after + the time reference, or when + the time reference is used to state
which of the two actions happened first.

5
TIME EXPRESSION
example:
The doctor had seen her swab test result before she came.

FIRST ACTION: had + seen (past participle of see) is used to indicate

the past perfect tense.
SECOND ACTION: came (past form of come)

The future perfect tense shows an action that started in the past and to be completed
in some future time. The auxiliary verbs will have (for common subjects) or shall have (for the
pronouns I and We) together with the past participle of the verb is used to agree with the time
expression by + the time reference.

TIME EXPRESSION
examples:
My mother will have known her health status by tomorrow morning.

will have (for common subject) + known (past participle of know) is

used to indicate the future perfect tense.

TIME EXPRESSION
