Santa’s House Design
Name: ___________________

Congratulations! You have embarked upon the journey of designing and building Santa’s House!
Before you can begin construction, you will need to design the floor plan and calculate the cost of
your equipment while staying within your $20,000 budget. Follow the steps below to get started.
Good luck!

Equipment Costs:
- Fireplace / Hearth $200/cm2 - Countertop/Table/Desk $150/cm2
- Christmas Tree $50/cm2 - Sink/Bathtub/Toilet $150/cm2
- Bed $175/cm2 - Washer / Dryer $150/cm2
- Couch / Arm Chair $175/cm2 - Electric Heater/AC $125/cm2
- Refrigerator $150/cm2 - Hot Water Heater $120/cm2
- Burner Stove $125/cm2 - Closet/Storage Cabinet $75/cm2
- Dishwasher $125/cm2 - Flooring/Rug $25/cm2

Procedure:
Step 1: Research - Using the Internet, conduct research on house floor plans (Think about size,
configuration, and location of equipment, etc.). Record your ideas on the Research Notes page.

Step 2: Sketch - Draw a sketch of the floor plan of your Santa’s house using the Practice Layout
page. When determining the size and location of each piece of equipment, consider how it will be
used. For example, a closet, large enough to store winter jackets and boots, should be located near
the entrance of Santa’s home. Present your sketch to your teacher before moving onto Step 3.

Step 3: Design - Using a pencil and a ruler, draw and label each piece of equipment onto the Floor
Plan Layout page. Keep your practice sketch nearby as a reference.

Step 4: Calculate Costs – Before you finalize your design

you will need to ensure that you can afford it. To calculate
this, find the area (Length x Width) of each piece of
equipment and multiply it by the cost/cm2. For example:
Dining Table: 6cm x 3cm = 18cm2; 18cm2 x $100/cm2 =
$1,800. Use the Floor Plan Calculations page to help
organize your calculations.

Step 5: Decorate – Now it is time to color the inside and outside of Santa’s house. To make his house
look more realistic, you may wish to draw pictures of the equipment and appliances on the inside
walls (See Example Photos page).

Step 6: Construct – You are now ready to begin building! Follow the steps on the Construction
Instructions page to get started.

Floor Plan Calculations Name: __________________

Use this page to organize your calculations. While

referencing your floor plan, measure the length
and width of each piece of furniture in centimeters.
Next, multiply each item’s length by its width to
determine its area. To calculate the cost of each
item, multiply its area by its cost/cm2. The cost/cm2
of each piece of equipment can be found on the
instructions page.

Construction Instructions
Materials:
• pencil crayons • scissors
• colored markers • glue stick
• fine liner (black)

Step 1: Using pencil crayons/markers, color the outside of

Santa’s house. Add your own designs to make it unique.

Step 2: Cut out the Front, Back, Left, Right, Roof and Floor Plan
Layout pieces of Santa’s house. You may choose to cut the
windows and door to allow them to open.

Step 3: While referencing your layout, draw pictures of your

furniture and equipment on the inside walls of the house (See
Photo 3). You may also wish to outline the windows and door on
the inside to make it look more realistic.

Step 4: Place the Left, Right, Front, and Back sides of your home
face down and in their correct position relative to the Floor Plan
Layout and fold the tabs inward (See Photo 1).

Step 5: Glue the bottom tabs underneath the Floor Plan

Layout by applying glue to the opposite side of the tabs. This
ensures the tabs do not cover the floor plan (See Photo 2).

Step 6: Apply glue to the remaining tabs and stick all the
sides together (See Photo 3).

Step 7: Glue the roof onto the left side of Santa’s house (See
Photo 4). Note: The roof is open on the right side of the home
to allow people to view the interior.

Candy & Decorations: Color and cut out candy and decorations
to add to Santa’s housoe. These can be glued onto the exterior
of the house. Challenge yourself to create your own candy
and/or decorations to make your house stand out!
