Technical Information

Problems on Oil Mist Detectors,

VISATRON VN 115/87
VN 116/87
VN 215/87

blinking LED Nr.14,

indicating suction pressure in measuring head too low

The described problems should be able to be fixed by following the given hints below.
As a standard remedy please execute the steps described in detectors manual page
5.01 – 5.06. If this does not help please go ahead with the following:

1) The fresh air bores for flow control are blocked

Remedy: - open the inspection cover of the measuring head
- Press cleaning pin contained in the service box into the left or
right fresh air bore, respectively.
The bores can be seen from the side of the scavenging air
chamber.
- close the inspection cover

Use the needle in Service

box for cleaning the bore

Caution: max.
11mm

2) The flexible bellows underneath the measuring head are cracked, see below

Please check for cracks in the rubber. If so, replace the 2 pieces by new ones from the
service box.

Check for
cracks

3) The pressure reducer cannot be opened enough anymore due to old membrane
inside. Check whether a turn on adjustment screw has an influence to the vacuum
pressure, measured with the U-tube manometer on detectors measuring head .
Remedy: order replacement pressure reducer, express delivery.

False Oil Mist Alarms with engine stop/slow down due to Humidity Problem:

Beside the previous described problem with LED No. 14, in some rare cases under
heavy circumstances humidity can lead to malfunctions of the Oil Mist detector, e.g.
false high Oil Mist Alarms. This can happen, when a water drop is passing through the
detector’s light measuring track, releasing an Alarm.
To fix the humidity problem, Schaller Automation offers as an option a measuring head
heating element for an easy modification of existing Oil Mist detectors.
The external heating element can be easily installed within 10 min. by the crew
themselves. Location is on top of the measuring head, heating up directly the area
around the detectors infrared light measuring track, avoiding the optical system to be
disturbed by condensed water. Electrical connection value will not change as the
electrical value is identical with the standard heating element. Only the heating element
location is different.
