INTRODUCTION: FORCE, MOTION, AND ENERGY

We have trees, mountain streams, sunlight and other natural resources. We live in a wonderful world.
The Supreme Being created a perfectly beautiful place or us.

But what have we done? We are slowly destroying this world every time we litter on the street,
cut a tree and pollute the air and the bodies of water. However, Mother Earth can only tolerate to a
certain extent. Typhoons, earthquakes and tornadoes occur in succession, affecting more people th an
ever. Maybe Mother Earth is getting even with us. So, we must do something to protect the environment.
This unit introduces some basic concepts in physics that will help you analyze, prevent, adapt or
mitigate environmental problem that are effects of h uman activities. Chapter 1 explains the motion of
bodies using Newton’s laws of Motion, Chapter 2 discusses work, energy and power. Chapter 3 explores

light and sound waves. Chapter 4 discusses the different effects of heat on a body and Chapter 5 gives an
explanation of the behavior of the different circuit elements.
In the end of this quarter, you will look to nature for inspiration in how nature heals so, you too can
find sustainable solutions to save Earth and leave behind a livable planet for future generation. As you go
along to this module, you will encounter the question , “How do basic concepts in physics beneficial to
human and environment?”
At the end of this module, you will be able to grasp ideas and information that you will remember
even if you have left school. You will also create a device known as the Newton’s cradle that can be
explained with some of the fundamental principles of physics and mechanics. Instructional worksheets
are designed to build up your knowledge, understanding, skills, and ability to transfer learning. This

ways or situations can each Newton’s law of Motion be proved to be useful. Then make a generalization
about the laws of motion in all situations. Write this in the fourth row of the table. Finally, answer the question in

“What makes Newton’s laws of Motion relevant and useful?”

You have heard adults say “I am so tired from working on the computer all day!” or “All the
paperwork I had to today
do drained my energy”. Are these claims rooted on scientific reasoning? In
the scientific sense, when is work really done? Does the amount of work that one can do relate to one’s
power and energy? How can you do a lot of work?
Find out as we journey
in this lesson and discover the relationship of work, power and energy. Are
you excited? If yes, proceed to the next activity!

Lesson 3 : Light, Sound and Waves

Our world is filled with images and sounds. When you tap a solid object like your shoes, chair, bottle, etc.
you would hear a distinct sound. Why is this so? When you talk, you can feel something vibrating inside of you.
Have you ever wondered how we are a ble to produce a sound? On the other hand, when we look at
something, we see different colors as well as the objects shape. When you look at the sky in the morning it is blue,
when we look at it in during sunset it is red. Why is this so? You’ve used your sense of hearing and sight, how
about if you use your

sense of touch? Why can feel that something is hot? Or cold?

The sound that you hear, the light that makes you see different colors and the heat that you feel are effects of
the movement of parti cles and energy.

In this lesson, you will find out about the interplay of motion of particles and energy that produces
sound, light and heat. You will learn a lot of wonderful things, are you excited? If yes, let’s begin the
exploration.
Activity 11: Speed of Sound
Why does sound travel faster in summer than in winter?

Direction: Open and watch the given link for the video to answer this activity, You could also read and analyze
the characteristics and propagation of sound on pages 55-60. In this activity, you will going to explain the effect
