1857 First War of Indian Independence (also known as the Sepoy Mutiny or Indian Rebellio

1885 Formation of the Indian National Congress (INC).

1905 Partition of Bengal by the British, leading to widespread protests.

1906 Formation of the All India Muslim League.

1915 Return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa.

1916 Lucknow Pact between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League.

1919 Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Amritsar.

1920 Non-Cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.

1930 Salt March and the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

1935 Government of India Act passed, providing limited self-governance.

1942 Quit India Movement launched by the INC.

1946 Cabinet Mission sent by the British to discuss transfer of power.
