IMPACTS OF GOOD FAMILY ORIENTATION IN CHARACTER BUILDING

AMONG GRADE 10 STUDENTS IN BOLINAO INTEGRATED SCHOOL

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Family is the fundamental and important structure of the society that has an important

role in one's life and in the society. The importance of the family as a social structure is

something unmistakable. Family is the single most important influence in a child's life. From

their first moments of life, children depend on parents and family to protect them and provide

for their needs. Parents and family form a child's first relationships. Parents are child's first

teachers and act as role models in how to act and how to experience the world around them.

Although affected by society and peers, children are more influenced by the family.

According to Kimble BA (2015) the relationship of parents with children or parenting

style serves multiple purposes. Moral and psychological training, identification, growth and

development of children's talents, skills, familiarizing with the rules and norms of the society

from the perspective of parents are among these purposes.

Children can achieve well at school when their family and friends take an interest in their

school and schoolwork. The family background of the student is the most important factor that

affects the student’s academic performance. In addition, Hussain (2017) noted that secondary

school students in public schools often come from economically poor and average income

families. These families face many problems causing emotional effects among their children.

They have poor academic performance.

Filipinos have been culturally described as polite, cheerful, responsive, easily offended,

nosy, garrulous, blunt, hospitable, feisty, irreverent, good-natured, smart, funny, gregarious,

pleasant, compassionate, easy to laugh, gracious, friendly, relaxed, fun-loving, sensitive and

accommodating according to Jeffrey Hays (2008). Butin contrast, Angela Santossaid to her

article that the values of today’s youth are very different from those of the older generation.

Nowadays, a lot of youths are affected by peer pressure, the misguidance of parents, and family

crises, leading to their inappropriate behavior.

M.F Radwan on his article “How parenting style affects your child’s personality” stated

that parents’ parenting style and the way they deal with their child affects the child’s personality

a lot. Baumrind (1971) has been credited for defining three specific parenting styles. These are

authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive styles of parenting.

According also to Baumrind(1991), parenting styles are important in socializing the

children. That’s why in parenting a child it should be done with selflessness and great love. Do

not overly control the children because it leads to a stubbornness of the child. In addition, it is

important to have good family orientation in building the character of a child positively.

This study tackles the impacts of parenting style to student’s character building. It will

help the parents to understand more about their children.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains the related literature and studies both foreign and local sources

contain information about good family orientation. The relevant literature and studies helped

researchers to provide the needed information in understanding the study.

2.1 Foreign Studies

Parents have an important role in identifying children’s talent and guiding them. Mutual

understanding and close relationships between parents and children are recommended.

Childhood education not only affects the achievement and happiness at the individual

level but also shapes the labor force quality and capacity of innovation (Heckman 2011) to

determine the potentiality of the development of a nation.

Families affect children’s learning behaviors and academic achievement in important

ways, as they are the primary and most significant environments that the children are exposed to.

Coleman’s report (1966) shows that families may play even more important roles in a student’s

academic achievement than schools and communities.

The equality of compulsory education should not only be reflected on its equal

opportunities of school entering, but also its independence of family background.

6

IN BOLINAO INTEGRATED SCHOOL2020

2.2 Foreign Literature

Parenting is a special way of sacrificing and learning how to love. According to Nicky

Lee to his book “The Parenting Book”(2009) children bring an awesome responsibility. Parents

are entrusted with the task, with all their potential to do well. They disturb parent’s sleep; they

interfere with plans; they stir up dormant and unresolved passions. Children are teaching them.

They teach parents what sacrifice is all about. Parents are forced to change, to grow up, to look at

the needs of another, to develop patience, to deal with a child’s insecurities, to become more

whole.

According to Siegelin his book “The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to

Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your

Family Thrive”(2011) as children develop, their brains mirror or reflect their parent's brain. In

other words, the parent's growth and development affects the child's brain. In short, it is very

important to teach the child properly through the parents’ actions. Siegel also said to his

work “Parenting From the Inside Out”(2003) that when parents don’t take responsibility for

their child, they miss an opportunity not only to become better parents but also to continue their

development.

“The way kids learn to make good decisions is by making decisions, not by following directions”

Alfie Kohn from his book “Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to

Love and Reason”(2005). Kids learn by their own mistakes and also by their experiences not by

terror and dictator.

2.3 LOCAL RELATED LITERATURE

It is known that Filipinos center their lives on their families (Miralao,1997). Filipinos feel

obligated to help their families and this influences them to study harder. It eagers them to

dedicate their efforts to succeed in their educational endeavors for the sake of their family, most

particularly their parents. Students reported being motivated for their family; another said good

academic performance is an act of gratitude for the family's support. This highly suggests that

there is a possibility for Filipino students to do well in school because of their family (Bernardo

et al. 2008).

Research Methodology

In this chapter the researcher discussed the methodology and the procedure engaged in

the study. It involves the research design, participants, data gathering instrument, sampling

technique, data gathering procedure.

3.1 Research Design

Qualitative research approach was used for this study, where the results are presented and

interpret through words. The data collected are presented in the form of tables with narrative

explanation.

3.2 Participants

The target population for this research are the Grade 10 students of Bolinao

Integrated School. A study may entail a large population which cannot all be studied. So, the

sample of this study stood at 169 grade 10 students of Bolinao Integrated School in the

Municipality of Bolinao, based on the stratified random sampling.. All the 6 sections from Grade

10 of Bolinao Integrated School will be the focus of the study. It is because we see them as more

capable of answering the survey as a grade 10 students. The formula was shown below:

3.3 Instrumentation

In conducting this research, the researchers used questionnaire as tool to gathered data

and information needed. The questionnaire made is in matrix type of questionnaire. For the

questionnaire, Likert scale was used to achieve the core objective of the study. The researchers

used the matrix type of questionnaire to avoid bias that are from opinionated answer. The

researchers considered the participant’s gender, age, grade and section.

3.4 Statistical Tool

In describing the profile of the participants in terms of age, sex, and grade and section to

determine the frequency counts and percentage, this study used the following formula:

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

1. Ask for approval. The researchers asked for approval from their respective teachers who

are in charge of the thesis. It was to know whether or not the study will be accepted. They

checked if there were further corrections and revisions to be made before the conducting of

research.

2. Make questionnaire. When the study was approved, the researchers started working on

their questionnaire basing their questions on the problem or theories they have found. The

researchers used related questions to be able to achieve the respective goal of their study.

3. Distributing. After the questionnaire has been made, the researchers distributed the

questionnaire to each section in the Grade 10 level. The number of students chosen in each class

was stratified random sampling method.

4. Analyze data. The researchers collected the questionnaire distributedfrom the Grade 10

respondents. Each questionnaire was checked by the researchers and have the data gathered.

Also, they analyzed the results and had the answers.

Conclusion

The purpose of the study is to give the result of the impacts of the good family orientation in

character building among Grade 10 students in Bolinao Integrated School. Based on the findings

of the study the majority is the students answer sometimes that their family busy at wok. So that,

this is why student have a bad side.

Recommendation

Parents: Parents also need to make time for their children to make sure that they will feel

prioritize. Parents should discipline their children in an authoritative style so that their children

will become more obedient and cooperative. On the other hand, parents should also limit

themselves from being super strict because their children might feel choked and manipulated.

Students: Students should not feel deprived by their family’s situation, instead use it as an

inspiration especially when it comes to their studies. Students must not adapt what their family

members do like vices or other bad things but instead the role model to their family

Teachers: Teacher should not be serious all the time when teaching so that students will not feel

pressured. Teachers should be understanding, especially to those students that have family

problems and need to be comfort. In this way teachers and students will feel more comfortable to

each other.

Peers and Friends: Friends should always be understanding, because aside from family,

relationship with friends also affects the character building of the students. Friends should

always emerge them to become a better person instead of influencing than bad things, because

true friends don’t tolerate wrong things.
