Quarter 2-Module 4:
Use Personal Pronouns
in Sentences

MARCELA O. BAYAS
Developer
Department of Education. Schools Division of BenguetWHAT I
NEED TO KNOW

This module is designed to make learning in English meaningful and

enjoyable for the Grade 4 learners. It is about the use of personal
pronouns in sentences.

In this learning material, there are activities that may need the
guidance of the parents/guardians or siblings to help the pupil do the
activities. It is important to read and understand the instructions in every
activity.

The learners are expected to be able to:

1. Identify personal pronouns

2. Use personal pronouns in sentences

2
WHAT I KNOW

This pre-assessment activity will tell how much you already know
about the topic. Answer it with your best.

Circle the pronoun in each sentence. Write “O” if the pronoun is an

object and “S” if the pronoun is a subject.

_______ 2. Laura called me last night.

_______ 3. We are late again!

_______ 10. The teacher gave him the answer.

3
WHAT’S IN

Let’s have a brief review of what you have learned when you were
in the 3rd grade about pronouns. We will be learning more about it later.

Pronouns are words used in place of nouns in sentences.

Study these sentences.

1. The blind man was waiting for Jesus.

He was waiting for him.
2. Jesus told the blind man to go to the spring.
He told him to go to the spring.
3. The blind man asked help from the people.
He asked help from them.

What did you observe? What word is used to replace the nouns in
each sentence? (Answer: He) The word he is used to replace the noun in
the sentence.

When writing, we use pronouns to avoid repeating the same nouns.

Let us read the sentences below. What noun does each underlined
pronoun replace?

1. The zookeeper takes care of several animals

He comes early to check on their food for the day.
Answer: _______________________________
2. Lily Garcia trains elephants.
Ms. Garcia teaches them to ride carts in the circus.
Answer: _______________________________

4
WHAT’S NEW

A. Rewrite the paragraph by replacing the underlined nouns with

pronouns.

Mother went to the grocery one day. The saleslady smiled at

Mother in welcome. Mr. Reynoso asked what mother needs. Mr.
Reynoso said that Mr. Reynoso and the saleslady are willing to help
mother. Mother said, Mother wants to buy some fresh milk. “Fresh
milk is healthier than softdrinks,” said Mr. Reynoso. The saleslady
went inside the store. The saleslady came back with a box of fresh
milk.

B. The following exercise will help you gain greater understanding

about how pronouns work. Choose the best answer in the box to
complete each sentence.

He It Them She They

1. The people joined the peace rally. __________ went around the town
plaza.
2. Melissa isn’t an architect; __________ is an engineer.
3. My doctor was born in Germany. __________ teaches language
lessons in his spare time.
4. Anton has a pet bird. He feeds __________ with ripe bananas.
5. Our friends are athletes. All of __________ are either strong, fast, or
both.

5
WHAT IS IT

There are different kinds of pronouns, but, in this lesson, we are

going to look specifically at personal pronouns.

Personal pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. They
are used instead of the names of people, places, or things.

Not only do personal pronouns help a writer to keep their writing

interesting, but they also give information about the noun they are
replacing to include how many, whether a person is male or female, and
who is writing the sentence. Here's a chart of all the personal pronouns:

Person Number Subject Object

First person Singular I Me
(the speaker) Plural We Us

Second person Singular You You

(spoken to) Plural You You

Third person Singular He, she, it Him, her, it

(spoken about) Plural They Them

Personal pronouns may take on various forms depending on number

(singular or plural for the most part). They may also take different forms
depending on case, gender, or formality. It is important to note that
personal pronouns may refer to objects, animals, or people.

Personal pronouns provide us with the following information:

➢ The person – Who is speaking?

➢ The number – Is the pronoun plural or singular?
➢ The gender – Is the pronoun feminine, masculine, or neuter?

6
In the following examples, personal pronouns are underlined.

1) Manny asked if he could join the badminton club.

Note: The word “he” is an example of a personal pronoun. He is
third person (because he is the person being spoken about),
singular, and masculine.
2) We would love playing tumbang preso.
Note: The word “we” is another example of a personal pronoun.
We is first person (because we are speaking as a group), plural,
and neuter.
3) Come look at my cat! He has climbed to the top of that tree.
Note: The word “he” is used here to refer to the cat. You may be
confused why the pronoun “it” was not used. This could happen
since the speaker knew the gender of the cat.
4) They walk to school everyday.
5) You need to stop lying.

Personal pronouns can be either subjects or objects in a sentence.

The pronouns I, he, she, it, we, you and they are used to replace
the subject in a sentence. These are called subject pronouns.

I I love the book “Charlotte’s Web.”

You You will enjoy the dialog between the spider and the pig
in the story.
He He listened attentively while Mae read the story.
She She likes to read the “Pea and the Princess.”
It It was a book written by a young girl.
They They had a role play of the animal farm.
We We helped them decorate the stage for the play.

7
The pronouns me, us, you, him, her, it and them are used as an
object pronoun. Object pronouns follow the verb or preposition. They
receive the action of the verb, answer the question “to whom” or act as an
object of preposition.

me The teacher asked me to write about a giraffe.

you What did the teacher tell you?
him Greg showed him a picture of giraffe in Africa.
her Elsie gave her a book on female giraffes.
it The hunter fed it with leaves of shrubs and trees.
them The giraffes run after them.
us The librarian told us that giraffes have the same number
of bones as any other mammal.

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference between subject

and object pronouns. It can be helpful to remember that a subject is what
a sentence is about, while an object is affected by the action of the subject.

Study these sentences. Take note how the underlined pronouns

are used in the sentence.

1. She is my mother. My teacher wrote her a letter.

➢ She is the subject pronoun.
➢ Her is an object pronoun. It refers to mother.
2. He is my brother. He lives in Davao. My uncle visits him often.
➢ He is the subject pronoun.
➢ Him is the object pronoun. It refers to brother.
3. My pet dog can bark. My cousin gave it to me.
➢ It is an object pronoun. It refers to the noun dog.
