REPORT SHEET

A. Reaction between the elements Copper and Sulfur

You have been provided with a sample of copper sulfide synthesized in the previous lab session
by reacting copper metal and sulfur powder. With a chemical test, you have to check whether the
sample is copper (I) sulfide, Cu2S, or copper (II) sulfide, CuS.
The test consists in mixing a small piece of the copper sulfide with 2 mL of 6 M NH3 in a test
tube under the fume hood. In presence of ammonia, CuS gives a blue solution while Cu 2S does
not. This is because CuS dissolves and reacts with ammonia, NH3, while Cu2S does not.

1. Does your copper sulfide sample react with NH3?

Yes, it does.

2. Suggest a possible formula for the sample of copper sulfide tested: Cu2S

3. Complete and balance the equation below that shows the reaction that led to the formation of
the sample of copper sulfide tested:

16Cu (s) + S8 (s)  8Cu2S

B. Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Add a small piece of zinc to a test tube containing 2 mL of 6 M HCl and note what happens.
4. Record your observations.
Bubbles=Hydrogen Gas formed+ Zinc dissolved.

5. Complete and balance the equation of the reaction done above:

Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq)  ZnCL2(s) + H2(g)
CHE 1401

Place a small piece of copper wire in a clean test tube; add 2 mL of 6 M HCl and note if a reaction
occurs.
6. Record your observations: No change.
7. Based on the reaction above, is Cu an active or an inactive metal? Inactive Metal.

WHILE HOLDING A CLEAN TEST TUBE IN THE FUME HOOD, place a 1-in. piece of
copper wire in it and add 1 mL of concentrated nitric acid, HNO3.

8. Record your observations:

Color changes to green+ Bubbles= gas forming.

9. Is the gas colored?

Yes, Brown.

10. Suggest a formula for the gas: NO 2

11. After the reaction has proceeded for 5 min, carefully add 5 mL of water. The solution turns
blue.
Based upon the color of the solution what substance is present in solution?
Cu (NO 3) 2

WHILE HOLDING A TEST TUBE IN THE FUME HOOD, add one or two drops of potassium
permanganate, KMnO4, solution to 1 mL of 6 M HCl.
12. Record your observations: Brown color.

13. Note the color of the evolved gas: Colorless.

14. Based on the color and odor of the gas, what is the gas? Cl 2 Gas

C. Metathesis Reactions

Place a small sample of sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, in a test tube and add several drops of 6 M HCl.
15. Record your observations: _Fizzing at the beginning, the formation of small bubbles.
CHE 1401

16. Note the odor and color of the gas that forms: Odorless, Colorless

17. What is the gas evolved ? CO2

18. Write an equation for the observed reaction:

Na2CO3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq)  2NaCl(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

To 1 mL of 0.1 M lead nitrate, Pb(NO3)2, solution in a clean test tube, add a few drops of 6 M
HCl.
19. Record your observations: Fizzing+ clear separation

20. What is the precipitate? PbCl2

21. Write an equation for the observed reaction:

Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) →PbCl2(s) + 2HNO3(aq)

To 1 mL of 0.1 M barium chloride (BaCl2) solution, add 2 drops of 1 M potassium chromate

(K2CrO4) solution.
22. Record your observations: Color changed: opaque color.

23. What is the precipitate? BaCrO4

24. Write an equation for the observed reaction:

BaCl2 (aq) + K2CrO4 (aq) →BaCrO4(s) + 2KCl(aq)

To 1 mL of 0.1 M barium chloride, BaCl2, solution add several drops of 3 M ammonium

carbonate, (NH4)2CO3, solution in a test tube.
25a. Record your observations: Fizzing, then separation of the substance+ white precipitate.

25b. What is the precipitate? BaCO3

26. Write an equation for the observed reaction:

BaCl2 (aq) + (NH4)2CO3 (aq) →BaCO3(s) + 2NH4Cl(aq)
CHE 1401

Isolate the precipitate obtained in step 25a and add to it several drops of 6 M HCl.
27. Record your observations: Precipitate floated upwards.

28. Note the odor: Faint smell.

29. What is the evolved gas? CO2

30. Write the equation of this reaction:
BaCO3 (s) + 2HCl (aq) →BaCl2(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

The chemical reaction between Iron(3) oxide and Phosphoric acid is :

→ 2FePO4(s)+ 3H2O (l)

Fe2O3 + 2H3PO4(aq)
(s)
