AIM: Study and Identify Types of Switches.

OBJECTIVES:

 To study about Switches.

 To identify types of switches.

THEORY: (Stick all photos and write in file pages)

The switch is used to make circuit “ON” and “OFF”.

In electronics circuits following types of switches are used.
 Toggle switch.
 Push button switch.
 DIP switch.
 Membrane switch.

Toggle switch.

A toggle switch is a type of

electrical switch that is actuated by
moving a lever back and forth to
open or close an electrical
circuit.

Figure 1

Types of Toggle switches

Single pole single throw (SPST)
These toggle switches make or break the
connection of a single conductor in a single branch
circuit. This switch type typically has two terminals
Figure 2 and is referred to as a single-pole switch.
Single pole double throw (SPDT) These toggle
switches make or break the connection of a single
conductor with either of two other single
conductors.
These switches usually have three terminals and
Figure 3
are commonly used in pairs.

Double pole single throw (DPST). These toggle
switches make or break the connection of two
circuit conductors in a single branch circuit. They
usually have four terminals.

Double pole double throw (DPDT). These

toggle switches make or break the connection of
two conductors to two separate circuits. They
usually have six terminals

Toggle switch Applications

 Switching circuits in telecommunication, industrial and commercial

equipment.
 Switching headlights
 The main switch for Air-conditioner
 Industrial equipment such as packaging machines, conveyors, etc.

Push Button switch.

A push button switch is a mechanical device used to control an electrical

circuit in which the operator manually presses a button to actuate an
internal switching mechanism.

Types of Push Button Switches

Push Button Non latching Switches: The switch function only

continues for as long as the operator is pushing the button.
Normally open (NO) Push button
A push switch allows current to flow only when the
button is pressed. This is the switch used to operate
a doorbell.
Normally close (NO) Push button
This type of push switch is normally closed (on), it is
open (off) only when the button is pressed.

Push Button latching Switches
A latching push button switch remains its position until pressed. It will not
return to its original state until pressed again. They are known as
maintained contact switches.
Push to ON latching switch.

When the switch is pressed contact 1 & 3 are

connected to each other until the switched is
pressed again.
Push to OFF latching switch.

When the switch is pressed contact 1 & 3 are

disconnected from each other until the switched is
pressed again.

Push Button switch Applications

 Vending machines
 Portable equipment
 Household appliances
 Power tools
 Consumer electronics and industrial controls.

DIP switches:

A DIP switch is a dual in-line package switch, meaning that it consists of a

series of switches in a single unit. It is an electromechanical device
requiring a user to manually move the actuator so that a different
electronic circuit is activated or deactivated. It is Commonly mounted on
a PCB or breadboard.

Types of DIP Switches

(i) Slide type DIP switches.

(ii) Piano type DIP switches.
(iii) Rotary type DIP switches.

Slide type DIP switches
They are standard toggle switches.

Each switch has two positions - either closed

or open (also on/off) and therefore operates
as an SPST switch. Any DIP switch can be
configured as normally open (NO) or
normally closed (NC). Normally open
switches complete the circuit when actuated,
Figure 8
while normally closed switches break the
circuit when actuated.

Piano type DIP switches

They are similar to slide DIP switches.
However, instead of lying horizontal, with a
forward and backward motion to move the
actuator, piano DIP switches are vertical,
requiring an up and down action.

Figure 9
Rotary type DIP switches

They toggle position as the user turns in a

circular motion. The amount of rotation
determines the output of the switch. A
rotary DIP switch with four output pins can
produce up to 16 different output
configurations in binary code.

DIP Switch Applications

 Programming garage door openers.

 Programming remote controls.
 Configuration of options on PC expansion cards or motherboards.
 Adding new items to an IoT network through easy user
configuration.

Membrane Switches:

Figure 11

Membrane switches are a type of human-machine interface characterized

by being constructed from several layers of plastic films or other flexible
materials.

Its main parts are an overlay containing the graphic elements; a circuit
that includes the conductive tracks, metal domes and terminals; and a
spacer that maintains a break between the switch contacts.

Applications of Membrane Switches

 Microwave oven panel

 Air conditioner control panel
 TV remote control etc.
CONCLUSION

Questions:

1. Classify push button switches.
