Module 5: Activity 1 – Getting Started in Solid Edge 3D

Publishing

Objective:
In this activity you will learn to create a very simple Solid Edge 3D Publishing
document so that we can work with the 3D tools in the Solid Edge 3D
Publishing environment.

Activity:
Step 1: Open a Solid Edge 3D Publishing model.

• Launch Solid Edge 3D Publishing and make sure that you are on the
New page.
• From the startup screen, click on the Create command while having
Blank Document highlighted.

• You are prompted to set up the page size and orientation for the new
document. Note: that you can set the selected settings as default
settings. Click OK to accept the default settings for this job.

• Observe that your Solid Edge 3D Publishing main view now displays
a single blank page. This is your first document page.

• Click on the Home tab (it should already be selected).

• Notice that the Edit Page button on the home ribbon is highlighted
indicating that we are in Page Layout Mode. In this mode, we modify
the elements on the document page.

Note: Depending on your Page Settings, you may or may not see grid lines
in your Page Layout Mode, as shown below.
Step 2: Turn on the page layout grid.

• On the Application menu, select Prepare.

• On the Prepare page, select the Page Settings option.

• On the Page Settings dialog, turn on the Display grid option.

Note: You can also use this dialog to control the grid spacing and turn on
a snap to grid option.

Step 3: Insert a 3D Model.

• From the Home tab > Insert group, click on the 3D View command.

• Observe that the mouse cursor indicates that you are ready to drag out
the view.
• Left click, hold down the mouse and drag a square about the size as
shown in the image below, and then release the mouse.

• Notice that this displays a Select Model dialog. Since there are no
existing models in the document, click on the Import Model button.
• Notice that this displays a file browsing dialog box that allows you to
select the file to import.

• Browse to your training files and click on the Worm Box

Assembly.asm.

• Click Open to begin importing this example model.

• Notice that the model is placed in a 3D View in Page Layout Mode.

The 3D view is a page element and can be positioned on the document
page as desired. This occurs in Page Layout Mode, when Edit Page
is on.
• Observe that the Edit Page button in the home ribbon is highlighted. If
it is not, click it.

• Observe the checkered overlay on the 3D view.

• Click on the 3D view. DO NOT double click. Notice that positioning

handles appear.
• Click around the center of the view and drag to move the view around
on the page.

• Click on the bottom-right handle and drag to resize the page element.

• Right click on the 3D view to bring up the right click menu. In the right-
click menu, select Position > Full Page.
• Observe that the 3D view is resized and positioned to fill the page. The
margin settings for the document may keep it from exactly filling up the
entire area.

Note: At this point, we have added a 3D model and a view of that 3D

model to our Solid Edge 3D Publishing document. We have
experimented with positioning the 3D view on the document page.
Next, we will learn how to change modes in Solid Edge 3D Publishing
so that you can work with the 3D model. Your page should look like
this:

Step 4: Interact with 3D in Solid Edge 3D Publishing.

Note: When Edit Page is turned off, indicating Interactive Mode, then the
3D view will not have an overlay. This indicates that clicking on the view
will use the active 3D tool such as rotate, pan, zoom and many other more
advanced 3D manipulation tools.

• From the Home tab, click on Edit Page to deselect it.

• Observe that the checkered overlay is removed from the 3D view. This
indicates that mouse commands will interact with the 3D, not the page
element.
• In the Viewpoint ribbon group, click on Rotate.

• Click on the 3D view with the left mouse button then hold down the
button and drag.

• Observe that the 3D model now rotates with your mouse movements.

• Release the left-mouse button. Click Home in the Viewpoint ribbon

group.

Step 5: Toggling between modes.

• Observe the state of the Edit Page button. It should still be turned off.
• Double-click on the 3D view.

• Notice that the state of the Edit Page button is now highlighted, and
the checkerboard pattern is now active.

• Now, double-click again on the 3D view.

• Notice that the mode changes back to 3D Mode.

Step 6: Save the document.

Note: Solid Edge 3D Publishing saves to its own document (QSD

file). This file format is a single compressed file that includes your
pages, setting and the imported information, in this case the 3D model.

• Choose Save from the Application menu.

• Since this is the first time saving this document, a dialog will appear
asking you for a filename.

• In the save dialog, choose a folder, and then enter my first 3D Pub
doc.qsd for the filename.
• Click Save to save your Solid Edge 3D Publishing document as a
QSD file.

• This completes the activity.

Activity Summary
In this activity you learned how to create a very simple Solid Edge 3D
Publishing document so that you could work with the 3D tools in the Solid
Edge 3D Publishing environment.
