SOLAR ECLIPSE
Lesson One:
What is a Solar Eclipse?
LESSON INTRODUCTION:
• Review with students why we have light during the day – the sun provides light for us.
• Tell students that a solar eclipse is coming up. When a solar eclipse occurs, the moon passes
between the earth and the sun. For just a short time, it will block the sun’s light. Today we will
learn more about solar eclipses.
TEACHER-LED DISCUSSION:
• Read Solar Eclipses to students.
• Discuss with students: This book told us about what happens during a solar eclipse. What did
you learn?
• Model it: Turn off the lights and have a student hold up the image of the earth. Have another
student shine a flashlight on the earth. They are the sun. Use an opaque plate as the moon.
Slowly pass it in front of the flashlight. What happens? What happens when the plate moves
away?
STUDENT ACTIVITY:
Students will create a model of the solar eclipse. Choose one:
OPTION 1:
• Rotating model.
OPTION 2:
• Cut and glue model.
OPTION 3:
