HYDROPONICS

SIX BASIC TYPES OF HYDROPONICS SYSTEM

SIX BASIC TYPES OF HYDROPONICS SYSTEM

Over time the basic models have evolved and resulted in hundreds of different
variations.
1. WICK SYSTEM
2. WATER CULTURE
3. EBB AND FLOW ( FLOOD AND DRAIN SYSTEM)
4. DRIP METHOD
5. NUTRIENT FILM TECHNIQUE (NFT)
6. AEROPONIC
WICK SYSTEM
• Passive with no moving
parts
• Simplest type of
hydroponics
• Nutrient solution is drawn
into the growing medium
from the reservoir with a
wick
WICK SYSTEM
• Growing media: perlite,
coco fiber and
vermiculite
• SELF WATERING
• Many options: from pop
bottles up to 5 gallon
buckets and beyond
WATER
CULTURE
• Is best active system to use.
• A Styrofoam platform
floating on the nutrient
solutions holds the plants.
• Oxygen is supplied to the
roots of the plants through
a bubbling air stone that is
attached to the air pump
WATER
CULTURE
• Most often used for leafy
vegetables such as
lettuce that requires fast
growth and ample water.
• It is not suitable for most
other plants that require
the longer growing
period.
EBB AND
FLOW
• Flood and drain system
• Nutrient solution is temporarily
and regularly flooded into
the grow tray using a
submerged pump connected
to a timer.
• When the timer is off, the
solution flows back into the
reservoir
EBB AND
FLOW
• Plants can dry out cycle
• Types of growing media such as
rockwool, perlite, gravel or grow
rocks can be used.
• It is advisable to use medium with
greater water retention abilities
such as rockwool as the incidence
of root dehydration during
power outages is lessened.
DRIP METHOD
RECOVERY SYSTEM NON-RECOVERY
• Where the excess (drained off) nutrient solution • does not collect or recycle the excess
is recovered in a reservoir and then recycled. nutrient solution.
• This system uses a less expensive (and less • It needs to be more precise than the former

due to the recycling process.
DRIP METHOD
This means that it uses a
pump to feed your plants
with nutrients and water
regularly. It is also called
trickle, or micro irrigation
system.
NUTRIENT FILM
TECHNIQUE
(NFT)
• Most popular
• Also known as GUTTER
HYDROPONICS
• Nutrient solution washed onto
plant roots
• Reservoir contains nutrient
solution which is pumped
through the system using a
water pump
NUTRIENT FILM
TECHNIQUE
(NFT)
• Does not use growing medium
• Instead the plants is
supported by a basket and
the roots dangle in the
nutrient solution
• There is a constant flow of
nutrient solution which means
a timer is not required for the
submersible pump
NUTRIENT FILM
TECHNIQUE
(NFT)
• The nutrient solution is pumped into the
growing tray using a tube it flows over
the roots of the plants, and then drains
back into the reservoir.
• This is an inexpensive method as it
does not require the expense of
replacing the growing medium for each
successive crop.
• Roots dry out rapidly however during
power outages or equipment failure
when the supply nutrient solution is
interrupted.
AEROPONIC
SYSTEM
• probably the most high-tech type of
hydroponic gardening.
• Like the previous system, the plants are
suspended in the air. The root system is
periodically (every few minutes) misted with
the nutrient solution using a timer and
nutrient pump on a short cycle for a few
seconds at a time.
• Due to root exposure in this system the
roots can dry out rapidly during power
outages or equipment failure.
AEROPONIC
SYSTEM
• Nutrient solution sprayed or
misted onto roots in growing
chambers where roots are
suspended in air.
• Used in many grow tower
commercial systems.
• Nutrient solution can be in a
grow chamber or outside.

MAINTENANCE
• Check your pH levels at least every other day to maintain
proper growing environments for your plant.
• Watch plants for changes. If leaves turn yellow, adjust/
increase fertilizer.
• Keep lights in good working order.
• Clean tank at least once every 3 weeks, to keep algae
growth to a minimum
