Riverbanks are part of public spaces. A good public space is a place
where social activities, economy, and inter-cultural mixing occur. That is because there are social activities and interactions between humans within the public space. Riverbanks are one of the public spaces that can be utilized by the surrounding community for recreation, and can even be utilized to support their daily activities such as commercial activity which is trading. But often the river banks are neglected. Residents did not manage the riverbanks to be better and did not utilized the area as much as possible. This happens on the riverbanks of the Ciliwung River on Jl. Pembangunan I, which river banks that should be made into public spaces and supporters of commercial activity even got neglected by citizens. It then makes the riverbanks become slumy and unorganized. So the authors formulate several questions such as, How to design a qualified public space in a riverbank? What does the public space require to support the community's commercial activities? According to Carmona (2008), public space has an important role for society one of them is improving the economy of citizens. The existence of public space will increase the social activities and interactions which will then increase the commercial values in the region. In addition there are several criterias that can be achieved in creating a qualified public spaces such as Comfort, Relaxation, Passive Engagement, Active Engagement, and Discovery. This research is conducted qualitatively, that is by data collecting technique obtained from literatures study and observations. The literatures study was used to derive theoretical conclusions used as parameters for designing public spaces that support social activities and social interactions. Observations were conducted based on literature studies and analyzing the study sites. The conclusion of this research is in designing green open spaces by rivers that can be used as public spaces that support the commercial activities of the citizens, that must be able to meet elemem of buildings, landscape, infrastructure and uses must meet the criteria of comfort, activity, access, and sociability. By fulfilling the elements and criteria will be able to create a quality and successful public space. References : 12 (1936 – 2017) Keywords : Riverbanks, Open Space, Commmercial Activity.
