PQC 1
Introduction
Concrete classified as "pavement quality” (PQC) is mostly used for building
highways, roads and runway pavements to take heavy loads.. It is distinct from regular
conventional concrete in that it contains aggregate with a size of 31.5 mm. It works well
for high-traffic volumes and is mostly used for building national highways.

Materials Required in Pavement Quality Concrete

A
✓ Cement- OPC 43 Grade (Ordinary Portland Cement) : IS : 8112 G
G
OPC 53 Grade : IS : 12269 R
E
PSC (Portland Slag Cement) : IS : 455 G
A
PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) : IS : 1489 Part-I T
E
Composite Cement (blended with granulated stag & fly ash IS: 16415
Fibres
(Preference shall be to use atleast the 43 grade grade or higher)
✓ Fly Ash
✓ Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag
✓ Silica Fume- up to '10% by weight of OPC
✓ Chemical Admixtures
✓ Fibres- can be utilized to lessen shrinkage cracking and
post-cracking, as well as reduce bleeding of water .
✓ Aggregates-Coarse aggregates in pavement concrete should not be larger than
31.5 mm. Fine aggregates should be made out of clean natural sand, crushed stone
sand, or a combination of the two.The aggregate Los Angeles Abrasion Test
value should not exceed 35%.

PQC 2
✓ Water-used for mixing and curing should be clean and free from any
substances harmful to the finished concrete.

Properties of Pavement Quality Concrete

• Strength: has a high compressive strength varying from 25 to 50 MPa allowing it
to bear the weight put on by the vehicles.
• Durability: is resistant to degradation brought on by abrasion, chemical attack,
and freeze-thaw cycles, among other environmental variables.
• Skid Resistance: are engineered to give cars enough skid resistance, especially in
wet weather, to reduce the chance of collisions.
• Workability:For adequate compaction and finishing, PQC must be sufficiently
workable during placement. The pavement's uniformity in concrete characteristics
is ensured by consistency in workability.
• Temperature Stability:Throughout a broad temperature range, including
extremely hot and cold temperatures, PQC retains its structural integrity and
functional characteristics.
• Resistance to Cracking:PQC is made to withstand cracking, which can be
brought on by temperature changes, shrinkage, or structural overloading. To lessen
cracking tendencies, reinforcement or crack control joints may be used.

Manufacture of Pavement Quality Concrete

• All integrated materials must be chosen, tested, and accepted for PQC.
• Mixture Design for Acceptance, Trials, and PQC, etc.
• Concrete batching
• Mixing
• Transportation and Placement
• Finishing, and Curing.

Challenges
• Cost Considerations: striking a balance between the requirement for
high-performance PQC and financial limitations, especially in large-scale
infrastructure projects where life-cycle and initial construction costs need to be
carefully considered.

• Sustainability: Implementing sustainable techniques in PQC building and upkeep,

such as cutting energy and carbon emissions, maximizing material use, and
encouraging resource recycling and reuse.

• Quality Control: Ensuring consistent quality control and assurance throughout the
PQC construction process, including material selection, mixing, placement, curing,
and testing, to meet project specifications and performance requirements.

Case Studies
In just one day, an NHAI contractor set a world record for
the most Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) laid on a 2,580
meter long, four-lane highway. The contractor, Patel
Infrastructure Limited, has achieved a feat that has been
acknowledged by the Golden Book of World Records and
the India Book of Records.
The record was created as part of the greenfield 8-lane
Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai expressway project, and it was
Mumbai-Delhi Expressway
completed using the largest fully automated, state-of-the-art
concrete paver machine in the world.

Sheikh Zayed Road is a key arterial route that is well-

known for its extensive usage of PQC pavements. The
route connects the area's main cities and tourist
destinations and plays a vital role in transportation.
PQC pavements on Sheikh Zayed Road have proven to
be very resilient to extreme heat, large traffic volumes,
and sporadic sandstorms, which has improved traffic

Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, United Arab Emirates flow and overall infrastructure resilience.
