AKUH INTERNSHIP – INTERVIEW 2019

• Assalam o Elikum, Congratulations for making to the Interviews. Here is


an overview of the questions and scenarios in the AKUH Internship
Interview held in October 2019.
• Before beginning, I would like to tell you a few things which we were told
at time of Interview: “Out of numerous people you were invited to the
interviews makes you a winner already 😊” No matter how much anyone
tells you and guides you at the end of the day you’ll be marked on the
genuineness of your answers. The exam is Objective as well as Subjective.
The medium of exam is English preferably but you can express in Urdu as
well, whatever your comfortable in. There are total 8 stations each of
7minute. The maximum marks per question (not entire station) were 6.
There is no right or wrong answer in interactive stations, its all what you
say and how you say and defend your answer. Except for the marks you'll
be marked and commented on your personality as subjective marking
separately.
• The exam was conducted in the Sports complex. The setup would be like
expo exhibitions cubicles. 5 areas running 8 cubicles. You don’t need to
carry any instrument. Just go dressed neat and clean, wear your labcoat
pressed and clean. You can carry a stethoscope if you want to. You will be
allowed to carry your bags and water bottle inside with you. Do keep a
pen with you.
• There would be approximately 70 candidates shortlisted directly and few
on waiting list. But this changes every year depending on how many AKUH
Grads take up the job.
• One more thing, the invigilators are extremely sweet and kind. Listen to
them very carefully when they say something. If you have time left at end
do ask them if you lack or had anything missed out.

STATION 1: SKILLS
BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT
1. Take consent, explain the procedure and DO TAKE HISTORY that
includes if the patient has drunken tea or coffee before coming here.
Medications, PMHx, FHx etc.
2. Take by both methods on both arms.

STATION 2: BREACH OF CONFEDIENTIALITY


The scenario was about a Politician admitted in AKUH. Both hospital and
politician were getting accused by media for lying and faking the politician
being sick news. You decide to take a step and clear all the misconceptions
and you talk to the media which goes viral. Now you are called in by the
in charge.
1. What have you done?
2. How will you defend yours act?
3. What will you do now?
4. What advice will you give to prevent any further mishap like this from
happening?
5. If the person would be a normal man suffering from HIV and you are
asked by a reporter what would you do?
6. What advice will you give your colleagues regarding this scenario.
7. What are important characteristics of a physician?

STATION 3: ETHICS
You had ordered Xray for Patient A suspected to have Pneumonia. But
accidentally Patient B had an Xray done which came out normal and it was
unnecessary for him in the first place.
1. What has happened?
2. What will you do now?
3. What are the measures to prevent this from happening again?

STATION 4: TRIAGE
Your senior resident is busy in placing a CVP line and has called you to go down
in Special care unit where two patients have called you, one with chest
pain and other with dyspnea, hypoxia and hypotension. On your way to
special care unit you receive another call from General ward for a patient
suffering from fever for one day. You have one intern and one final year
student with you.

1. Which patient will you attend? And others will attend what? Justify.
2. How will you manage this situation?
3. Now you have reached the SCU what will you do now? Will you manage
alone?
4. The patient condition is detoriating. His saturation is going low what will
you do now?
5. What are the limitations to this scenario?

STATION 6: ETHICS
You have being approved 2weeks leave beforehand and now your senior
resident has assigned you on call in that period of time. You have decided
planned out everything and now this upsets you. Now you go and speak
with him and your resident tells you that do the job or face the
consequences.
1. What is happening here?
2. What will you do?
3. Will you agree to do the call?
4. If the senior says give me an idea and I'll wave this call off what advice
would you suggest?
5. What do you think about why is this happening with you?

STATION 7: SKILLS
BLS – CPR
1. How do you use an AED?
2. Chain of survival?

STATION 8: MEDICAL ERROR


You forgot to enter the labs at night due to which the surgery scheduled in
morning got cancelled. The senior resident is shouting at you and is harsh
at you.
1. Tell me about yourself.
2. Is the senior correct to scold you?

3. What has happened here?
4. What will you do now?
5. Will you talk to family?
6. What steps will you take to prevent this from happening in future?

• Go through all the past papers available. Don’t try to rattafy anything
just practice the skills nicely. Get a good grip on the ethics and basics of
everything.
• Stick to one video and follow that and time yourself. Watch ethics
videos on Youtube. Read the BLS - CPR Protocols, practice few questions
of ethics from google or from here:
