10.0 ROAD, RAILROAD AND WATERWAY CROSSINGS

10.1 A foreign pipeline shall be crossed under the bottom unless the operator
approves a top crossing and minimum cover requirements are maintained. See
Appendix B, Figure 1 for a typical foreign line crossing drawing.
10.2 The minimum clearance between lines or underground structures shall be 305
millimeter (12 inches)
10.3 Cathodic test leads shall be installed on the pipeline, and if approved by Burren
Resources Petroleum Limited on the foreign pipeline.
10.4 Overhead power lines, buried power and communications cables, road and
railroad crossing shall be as near to a right angle as possible. When crossing
above power or communication cables, sandbags or other support structures
shall be placed to prevent pipeline weight bearing on the cable.
10.5 Road or railroad crossing shall be uncased except for the following:
10.5.1 When casing is required by regulation on the property owner.
10.5.2 When casing is deemed necessary due to rocky terrain, wide crossing,
etc.
10.6 Casing for road crossing shall be two pipe sizes larger than the pipeline and be a
minimum of 35,000 psi yield strength.
10.7 Casing insulators shall be installed as shown on the typical Cased Highway
Crossing, Appendix B, figures 3 and 4. Alternatively, concrete coated pipe may
be used.
10.8 Each end of the casing shall have a seal, insulator, and vent pipe. The vent pipe
shall have a vent cap or a 180° return fitting.
10.9 For road and railroad crossing in low lying, wet areas the casing shall have two
vents installed with one the vents located in the bottom of casing as shown
Appendix B, figure 4.
10.10 The minimum cover requirements for uncased and cased road and railroad crossing shall be as
follows:
Uncased Cased
meter (ft) meter (ft)
Under railroad tracks 1.53 (6) 1.68 (5.5)
Under highway surface 1.22 (4) 1.22 (4)
Under all other surfaces within ROW or from bottom of ditch 0.91 (3) 0.91 (3)

Note: The minimum cover shall be 1.22 meter (4 ft) for pipeline transporting LPG
or the other highly volatile liquids.

10.11 Pipeline crossing highways and railroads shall be cased if combined stress on
the pipeline caused by external compression and internal pressure is equal or
higher than the maximum allowable stresses for operating conditions. Casing

shall extend beyond the toe of the road ditch back slopes and shall be installed
bare.
10.12 Vents shall be installed at each end of a cased crossing. Contractor shall cut vent
holes in casing pipe prior to installing carrier pipe. Vent pipe above ground shall
be painted in accordance with Burren Resources Petroleum Limited
Specification.
10.13 A vent cap fabricated from the vent pipe shall be installed on all casing vents and
a pipeline marker sign shall be bolted to vent cap using drilled and tapper holes
provided in vent cap.

10.14 UNCASED ROAD CROSSINGS

10.14.1 Uncased road or railroad crossing shall be design with a maximum 0.5
design factor.
10.14.2 When uncased crossing are made where drainage ditches are present
the pipe shall be protected by one of the following:
o A precast concrete slab on a 152.4 millimeter (6 inches) dirt pad over
the top of the pipe.
o A 609 millimeter (24 inches) split steel pipe on a 1.83 meter (6 feet)
dirt pad with sandbags over the top of the pipe.
10.14.3 Boring
Where possible, the crossings of uncased roads shall be installed
through the road bed by boring.
10.14.4 Open Cut
Where boring by conventional methods is rendered impossible, pipeline
shall be layed on an open crossing trench throughout the road.
Immediately following the installation of crossing, the trench shall be
backfilled as required by Burren Resources Petroleum Limited. Backfills
of road crossings shall be tamped in 152 millimeters (6 inches) layers.
The top 152 millimeters (6 inches) of backfill shall be material of the
same type as the original road surface. The road shall be restored to
the satisfaction of Burren Resources Petroleum Limited.

10.15 RIVER, WATERWAY STREAM & SWAMP CROSSINGS

10.15.1 Waterway crossing shall be constructed in accordance with all
applicable permits.
10.15.2 Waterway crossing shall be ditched or directionally bored at right angles
to the stream. Elevated crossing shall not be considered without
approval by Burren Resources Petroleum Limited. See Appendix B,
Figure 5 and 6 for typical waterway crossing.
10.15.3 Ditching
Boring

The right–of–way shall be extended to the minimum width required for

construction and ditching operations. The ditch shall be excavated by
dragline, dredge or other suitable and approved means. The pipe may
be pulled or floated into the ditch. Equipment and methods as required
shall be used to keep the ditch in conformity with the established survey
line regardless of the depth of excavation and the type of soil or rock
encountered. Unless specified otherwise, river crossings shall be
installed with a minimum 1219 millimeters (48 inches) of cover over the
pipe in normal soil, and a minimum of 457 millimeters (18 inches) of
cover over the pipe in solid rock. A minimum 610 millimeters (24 inches)
of cover over concrete weights is required in normal soil.
Where rock is encountered, the top of the concrete weights may not be
higher than the bottom of the river. Cover shall be measured from the
top of the pipe and concrete weights to the original ground elevation.

10.16 ANCHORING
Unless continuous concrete–weight coating is specified, concrete bolt–on or set–
on lights shall be furnished and installed by Contractor on marine installations,
rivers, swamps or poor drainage areas. The pipe shall be wrapped with 6.35
millimeters (¼ inch) thick rock shield before installing the weights. After protective
coating and concrete river weights have been applied, wooden strips shall be
installed between bolt–on weights and steel cable clamped to each weight to
prevent damage to the coating while the pipe is being pulled across the river or
stream.

10.17 CLEAN–UP
The banks of all streams and rivers shall be restored to their original or better
condition. When required, the banks shall also be properly rip–rapped with sacks
filled with soil, sand, or other suitable material and properly seeded. The beds of
all rivers shall be restored to their original elevations and grade, and spoil, debris,
and other obstructions interfering with normal water flow shall be removed from
the crossing. Spoil removed from the ditch shall be kept within the limits of the
right–of–way and other areas provided for construction. These areas shall be
properly cleaned up by Contractor following the backfilling operation.

10.18 EXISTING PIPELINE CROSSINGS

The proposed pipeline(s) shall cross under all foreign pipelines and shall have at
least 305 millimeters (12 inches) of clearance between the bottom of the foreign
pipeline and the top pipeline. If the depth of the existing pipeline makes it
impractical to cross under the pipeline, the proposed pipeline(s) shall cross over
the top of the existing pipeline provided that Burren Resources Petroleum Limited
approval has been previously obtained.

* All underground facilities such as communication or power cables,

drain tiles, irrigation lines, etc., shall have 305 millimeters (12 inches) minimum
clearance. When crossing communication or power cables, sandbags or other
support structures shall be placed to prevent pipeline weight from being placed
on the cable. Cable crossings should be made at a 90° angle.
