KELSOL® 15-173
(formerly LINAQUA 15-173)
Product Code:15173-00
Water-Soluble Oil
DESCRIPTION
®
KELSOL 15-173 is a chemically modified, linseed oil supplied in butoxy ethanol. It contains no water as supplied,
but can be diluted with water without the addition of a neutralizer. The coupler solvent is lost by evaporation
during drying, forming a continuous, water-resistant film.

APPLICATIONS

• Opaque and semi-transparent stains

• Additive for latex paints
• Printing inks
• Artists colors
• Plywood marking paints

FEATURES

• Durability of linseed oil

• Reduction with water only
• Compatible with mineral spirits and light viscosity oil, e.g., Superior Linseed Oil
• Freeze-thaw stability

FORMULATING NOTES

DRIERS – Once the water and coupling agent have evaporated, VISCOSITY REDUCTION – When KELSOL® is diluted with water, the
KELSOL® dries by oxidation and polymerization in the same manner initial result is a gradual increase in viscosity, reaching a maximum at
as linseed oil. Extensive drier studies in KELSOL®, over several approximately 50% to 55% solids, followed by a steady reduction in
years, have established the following recommended drier viscosity on continued dilution. Refer to the viscosity reduction curve
combinations calculated on KELSOL® solids: included.

(1) 0.06% Cobalt Naphthenate It is not necessary to use distilled water in KELSOL® formulations.
0.02% Manganese Naphthenate Regular tap water is entirely satisfactory. When reduced with water
(2) 0.035% Cobalt Octoate to 25% to 40% solids, the mixture will have a pH of about 5 to 6.
0.5% Zirconium Naphthenate

Cobalt drier acts more as a through drier in KELSOL® systems and Typical Viscosity Reduction
relatively high levels are recommended. Small amounts of manga-
nese stabilize the dry. Zirconium drier and/or lead pigments (when
permitted by regulation) improve the through cure, particularly at 10
lower temperatures.

Viscosity - Stokes
The driers should be incorporated into the KELSOL® before
reduction with water. A convenient method is to mix the driers into a
portion of the KELSOL® before thinning with water.

STORAGE – KELSOL , as shipped at 85% solids, does not contain
any water and is non-corrosive. KELSOL® can be easily stored in
tanks or regular drums and handled like regular linseed oils. The low
viscosity and non-foaming characteristics of KELSOL® make bulk
handling very convenient. The high solids content of KELSOL® 0.1
eliminates the need for paying excessive freight charges on water
80 60 30
that can be far more easily added in the paint manufacturer’s own
plant. Since the viscosity of KELSOL® is low, G – K on the Gardner- Percent Solids by Weight
Holdt scale, there is no need for reducing it with water prior to
formulation. If KELSOL® is reduced with water, it must then be stored
in a fiberglass, stainless steel, or Monel lined storage tank.
