Mixture Purification
Problem:
How can we separate mixtures?
Objectives:
To purify three components from given mixture
Research:
Summary about how petroleum is obtained, properties of this mixture, and methods to
separate the compounds
The most common physical properties used to describe petroleum are density,
viscosity, and boiling point ranges. The density of crude oils is usually expressed
as API (American Petroleum Institute) gravity, which is inversely related to
specific density.
Results:
b. c. d.
Analysis:
Based on your results, explain why the mixture separate with the steps we follow and
write the name of each separation method.
The first two separation methods were crystallization and sublimation. In the
crystallization, some part of the mixture become crystals. It happened because
of the heat, and the water in the cap of the beaker. The second method of
separation was the sublimation, the solid components became gas. The third
separation method was filtration, we used filter paper so the liquids could
separate from the solids. Finally, we used evaporation to take out all the water
that was on the substance. We evaporated it with heat.
Conclusions:
My hypothesis (was/was not) supported. I predict
that_____________________________
we needed to use different methods to separate the substance
a. And it did
because____________________________________________________
there were different components
b. But what really happened
was__________________________________________
