Completing a Student Loan Review

1. Obtain Client’s NSLDS file

The NSLDS file contains all the borrower’s federal student loan information and is essential to completing a review. We recommend
having your client email the NSLDS .txt file to you BEFORE proceeding any further to ensure that you can complete the analysis. You
will not be able to proceed without an electronic version of the NSLDS file.

For instructions on how your client can obtain their NSLDS file, see below.
 NSLDS Download Guide
 NSLDS Download Video

2. Set Appointment with Client

Conduct a basic interview with your client. This can be done in person or over the phone. Instruct your client to have their most recent tax
return with them.

3. Conduct Interview and Upload NSLDS

Obtain basic information from your client and enter it into the Portal.

Please follow these instructions:

 Log in to the Portal
 Click on Student Loans tab in upper left
 Navigate to the Repayment Plan Analyzer
 Click Start New
 Complete the “Analysis” set of questions covering the following topics:
o Collection activity
o Family information
o Employment
o Income
o NSLDS upload (from Step #1 above)

4. Pay For and Download Report

1
After the data is entered in Step #3 above, pay for and download the client’s customized report detailing the client’s current loan status and
repayment options.

5. Review Report
The client’s report will contain two sections – one with instructions for you as the Attorney and one for your client. Please review both
sections to understand the client’s options and potential next steps.

6. Schedule Appointment with Client

After you have read the client report (#5 above) and are ready to discuss your client’s options with them, schedule an appointment with
your client to review the report, discuss their options and determine which repayment plan best suits their needs.

Because the client report is full of details and information (as well as disclaimers) that will instruct and guide your client on their
repayment options, we recommend that you provide a copy of the report to them. We recommend that you make sure your client has
retained your services before providing them the report.

7. Return to Portal to Complete Application

Once you and your client have determined the best course of action to take, return to the Portal and complete the client’s application.

Note: additional information about the client is needed such as their driver’s license number, references, and employer information.

8. Download the Applications

After the additional borrower information is complete (#7), download your client’s customized application materials.

9. Client Signs Application
The client should sign and date the application materials per the instructions provided when you download the applications (#8).

10. Send Application to Servicer Through Portal1

Send the client’s complete application package to the servicer through the Portal:
 Log in to the Portal
 Click on Student Loans tab in upper left
 Navigate to the Add Borrower
 Answer the questions to import and onboard your client’s file
 Upload any required documents
