VERSIONS OF ROUTERS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer
networks.
Routers keep networks up and running. They analyze the data that is sent over
networks,change how it is packaged, and then send it to another network or over a
different type of network.

The versions include:

1. Virtual
Virtual routers are pieces of software that allow computers and servers to operate like
routers. They share data packets just as physical routers do. They can offer more
flexibility than physical devices since they can be scaled as the business grows.
2. Core
These wired or wireless routers distribute data packets within networks, but not
between multiple networks. They are designed to become the backbone of your
network and do the heavy lifting of data transfer, which is why they are usually high-
performance.
3. Edge
This is a wired or wireless router that distributes data packets between one or more
networks but not within a network. As their name indicates, edge routers are placed at
the edge or boundary of networks, and typically connect to Internet service
providers(ISPs) or other organizations’ networks.
4. Wired
A wired router links directly to a device over a wired link. Usually, they have a port
that links to the internet to communicate with the modem. The wired router will attach
to computers and other devices to transmit information through another port or ports.
5. Wireless
Wireless routers create a wireless signal in your home or office. So any PC within
range or wireless routers can connect to it and use your internet. In order to secure
your wireless routers, you simply need to come secure it with a password or get your
IP address.
6. Broadband
They can be used to connect computers or to connect to the internet. If you connect to
the internet through phone and using Voice over IP technology(VOIP) then you need
broadband router. These are often a special type of modem that will have both
Ethernet and phone jacks.
