Land Use and Land Cover
A map is a symbolic representation of selected characteristics of a place, usually drawn on a flat
surface. Maps present information about the world in a simple, visual way. They teach about the
world by showing sizes and shapes of countries, locations of features, and distances between
places. Commonly, 1:15840 scale is used for field mapping and 1:31680 is for publication. A
map usually has a legend which gives the scale of the map and explains what the various
symbols represent.

Land cover and land use has become crucial basis work to carry the prediction to the dynamical
change of land use, prevention to natural disaster, environment prediction, land management and
planning. With rapid development of remote sensing technology, land-cover or land-use
classification has become the most credible, rapid and effective measure to monitor the condition
and changing of land-cover or land-use in the global surface.

Land cover and land use are two different concepts in its intrinsic signification. Land cover
emphasize particularly on its nature, properties and it is the synthetically reflection of various
elements in global surface covered with natural body or manual construction. Land cover
consists of roofs, pavement, grass and trees. However, land use is defined as the man’s activity
and the various use which carried on land. Land use could be described as urban use, residential
use etc.

The map is representing a particular area of Kustia Sadar Upazila. The map is showing the land
use and land cover of this area. As we know, land cover is the physical cover observed on the
earth surface, whether vegetation, urban infrastructure, water, bare soil or other; it does not
describe the use of land. As this map is representing an urban area the vegetation cover is very
low here. This map shows only one pond in this locality. The urban infrastructures, park or the
bare soil is land cover.

Land use involves the management and modification of natural environment or wilderness into
built environment such as settlements and semi-natural habitats such as arable fields, pastures,
and managed woods. There are many types of land use:

• Recreational - fun, non-essentials like parks.

• Transport - roads, railways, and airports.
• Agricultural - farmland.
• Residential - housing.
• Commercial - businesses and factories.

The map is showing different types of land use and cover. For urbanization and over population,
the rate of agricultural land cover is decreasing. As it is an urban area map, the residential area,
market, transport and recreational land use are prominent here. We can easily gain a basic
knowledge about land cover and land use of a particular area from a map. It’s a very effective
way to show a lot of information through a visual representation.
