WRITING
PART 1
1 (sample answer)

Dear Mrs Simpson,

It’s really exciting to hear we’re going to have a speaker coming to college. I think it will be very useful.
I would like to listen to a famous sports person talking. A lot of students play different sports and most people watch it
on TV, so that would be good for everyone, I think. I would really like to ask about the training they have to do to be the
best.
While they’re here, the college basketball teams could play a game for the sports person to watch! I’m sure they’d enjoy
that.
I hope you like my ideas. Thanks.

PART 2
2 (sample answer)

There are so many different instruments around the world. In my country, the guitar is very popular because if you can
play it, you can play along to pop songs. It’s also a good instrument to take somewhere like the beach or a campsite,
and everyone can sing together. It’s quite easy to play, especially compared to a violin or a trumpet, which both take far
more practice.
There are many advantages to playing an instrument. It’s relaxing as you don’t think about work when you’re playing
music. And who knows … if you’re lucky, you might be good enough to become famous!

3 (sample answer)

Alex heard a strange noise in the street and went to see what it was. She glanced around, but there was nothing there.
‘Strange,’ she thought. Then she noticed people pointing at the sky above her house.
To her surprise, she saw a huge balloon with a basket containing two worried-looking people. Alex watched nervously
as it just missed the top of her house. She ran back inside and out of her back door just as the balloon was landing in
her garden!
The people explained they had a problem with their equipment and asked to fix it in Alex’s garden. ‘No problem!’ she
replied. And once they’d repaired the balloon, they took her for a ride to say thank you. She couldn’t believe her luck!
