TIME AND WORK

CONCEPT OF EFFICIENCY \ No. of days required to complete the work

Efficiency means rate of doing work. This means that more the Total work done 1

efficiency, less will be the number of days required to complete Work done per day 1

a certain work and less the efficiency, more will be the number 12
of days required to complete a certain work.
Aliza is twice as efficient as Binny. CONCEPT OF MAN-DAYS
⇒ Aliza does twice as much work as Binny in the same time If ‘M’ men working together can complete a work in ‘D’ days,
interval then the product of number of men (M) and number of days (D)
⇒ Aliza will require half the time as required by Binny to i.e. M × D is known as the number of MAN-DAYS.
do the same work. Number of man days to complete a specific task always
remains constant.
CONCEPT OF NEGATIVE WORK Suppose 30 persons working together for 20 days to complete
Suppose two persons A and B are working to build a wall while C is a job, then the total work done is equal to (30 × 20 = 600)
working to demolish the wall. If we consider the work as the build- man-days. If we change the number of days in which the work is
ing of the wall, then breaking the wall (by C) is negative work. to be completed, then the other factor i.e. the number of persons
The concept of negative work generally appears in the problems will change accordingly, so that the product of the factors becomes

pipes/leaks, which are working against each other.
WORK DONE
If we consider the work of filling a tank, the inlet pipe does
positive work while the outlet pipe/leaks does negative work. Consider a whole work as the unit work.

t t 23. (b) Let the inlets be A, B, C and D.
\ Whole tank would be filled in 1 ´ = h this is
3 3 A + B + C = 8.33 %
1/3 of the time taken by large pump i.e., t hour B + C + D = 6.66%
1 A + D = 5%
19. (b) A’s one day’s work = th work .
15 Thus 2A + 2B + 2C + 2D = 20%
1 and A + B + C + D = 10%
B’s one day’s work = th work . ® 10 minutes would be required to fill the tank
10
completely.
(A + B)’s one day’s work = 1 + 1 = 1 th work. 24. (b) The 32 minutes extra represents the extra time taken
15 10 6 by the pipes due to the leak.
Let A left after x days. Normal time for the pipes ® n × (1/14 + 1/16)
x = 1 ® n = 112/15 = 7 hrs 28 minutes.
\ (A + B)’s x days’ work = th work .
6 Thus, with 32 minutes extra, the pipes would take 8
x 6- x hours to fill the tank.
Remaining work = 1 - = th work.
6 6 Thus, 8(1/14 + 1/16) – 8 × (1/L) = 1 ® 8/L
6-x = 8(15/112) – 1
Now, in 5 days, work done by B = th work.
6 1/L = 15/112 – 1/8
6- x = 1/112.
\ In 1 day work done by B = th work
30 Thus, L = 112 hours.

\ 1 Man º 1.5 boys, 1 woman = 6/5 boys. afternoon
Now, 5W + 6B = 12B. So according to question, x+y=7
Required answer is calculated as follows : x+z=5
Total no. of boys reqd. = 18 × [(15/16) × (8/9)] y+z=6
= 15 boys Adding all three equations, x + y + z = 9
The number of boys already present = 12. So, d = 9 days
