she was piloting, crashing into Hauser Reservoir.
A boater recreating on the lake dove in to the very
cold water to try to save her, risking his own life, to no
avail. Her body was recovered by search and rescue by 5
p.m.
Cause of the Horse Gulch fire that was reported
at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday? Carelessness by some
idiots that didn’t put out a camp fire or were shooting
off fireworks or a combination of both. And it cost one
life so far (and we pray she will be the only one), as the
fire has consumed 1,000 acres so far and homes have
been evacuated.
Aaron Flint had Lewis and Clark County Sheriff
Leo Dutton on Montana Talks this morning in the 8:00
hour. Sheriff Dutton explained the tragedy and said
they are going to try their best to track down who is
responsible the careless camp fire.
In other Montana Talks news, in the 9:00 hour
there was an interview with Chris Gomer of the Bureau
of Reclamation discussing the St. Mary canal siphon’s
catastrophic failure.
We’re sure Aaron will have the audio with Sheriff
Dutton and the St. Mary failure posted today, also
his talk with Tim Sheehy in the earlier morning hour
about the tragic loss of the pilot.

In the 1970 movie “Patton”
General Patton, portrayed by George
C. Scott, and his entourage are in a
building when the German Luftwaffe
makes a strafing run at the compound
that contains the men and equipment
of Patton’s third army.
My dear friend’s dad and my
growing up neighbor, Sgt. Paul
Stazen, was stationed there. As the
scene continues, the strafing run
forces the officers inside the building
to take cover as quickly as possible.
The military strategists hide under
what they can find.
As the assault continues, General
Patton crawls out from beneath a
heavy table that he was under and
yells that it was enough, and he then
jumps out of a window and lands on
alive. As you can see, canopy on the plane is open
and Baggett raising his pistol to shoot!
a large vehicle in the compound and
immediately grabs his .380 caliber
Colt Pocket Pistol that he had for
personal protection, that most all
were issued.
General Macarthur had and preferred
a 7.65mm or 32ACP Colt Pocket
pistol.
General Patton jumps down
into the courtyard and yells at the
German Luftwaffe planes “Come on
you bastards, take a shot at me, right
in the nose.”!
Patton/Scott, then raises his small
caliber pistol and begins emptying
his pistol at the planes strafing the
area. We do not really know if the
Lieutenant General hit the planes or
if he actually brought one down. But
that is movie history and brings up
to attention as to how many enemy
planes were ever brought down in any
wars.
Well… there is one incident well
reported of an amazing Lieutenant
who actually did it but not from
the ground. It is well documented
and even denied by the Japanese
government as to not embarrass
them.
Owen Baggett was a “butter bar”
or a 2nd Lieutenant, who graduated
from college where he was a drum
major.
Kinda like Senator Jon Testor, the
music teacher, turned politician…
Unlike Testor, Baggett enlisted in
the Army Air Forces and graduated
from pilot training on July 26,
1942, at the New Columbus Army
Flying School and was immediately
transferred to British India where
Baggett’s squadron, part of the 7th
Bombardment Group, was ordered to
destroy a bridge at Pyinmana, Burma.
He was flying the B-24 Liberator,
similar to my Uncle Will’s plane where
Uncle Will was a B-24 waist gunner in

the Solomon Islands and the Coral Sea.
Before reaching their target, the 12 B-24s of 7th Bomber
Group were intercepted by 13 Ki-43 Japanese fighter
planes.
Quoting the report:
Owen Baggett’s plane was severely damaged and
was set on fire by several hits to the fuel tanks. The crew
was forced to bail out, escaping the crippled B-24 only
seconds before it exploded. The Japanese pilots then began
attacking U.S. airmen as they parachuted to earth. Two
of the crewmen were killed in the air, though contrary to
some reports that the pilot, Lloyd K. Jensen (1920–1994)
was “summarily executed”, Jensen did survive the war.
Baggett, who had been wounded, decided to play dead,
hoping the enemy pilots would ignore him. Nevertheless,
one Ki-43 flew close to Baggett and slowed to make sure.
Baggett saw the pilot open his canopy and decided to take
a chance. He drew his .45 caliber M1911 pistol and fired
four shots at the pilot. He then watched as the plane stalled
and plunged toward the ground. Baggett landed and was
immediately captured by Japanese soldiers on the ground.
He remained a prisoner of the Japanese for the rest of the
war. Baggett and 37 other POWs were liberated at the
war’s end by eight OSS agents.
Amazing shooting from the lines of a dangling
parachute to hit a flying airplane! But it gets even better
than that! You see, the Japanese military claimed that the
incident did not happen as reported but that the Japanese
pilot recovered control of the plane and returned it to his
base.
Well… not really.
Actually the young lieutenant’s 45 was true on target
and Owen actually hit the enemy pilot in the head while
dangling from his parachute and the Japanese Zero
crashed into the field. Baggett was captured and taken to a
POW camp, where he was surprisingly received and feted
as a hero by the Japanese camp commander, a colonel, for
his fine shooting at the Zero!
This is an example of the Japanese military’s peculiar
Bushido code, which placed great emphasis on honor and
valor in battle.
After the war, Baggett returned to the United States
and settled in Texas, where he lived a quiet life with
his family. He died in 2006 at the age of 85. Baggett’s
heroism in shooting down a Japanese Zero with his Colt
.45 while hanging from an open parachute will always
be remembered as an inspiring example of courage and
determination.
So you see, this is an example of a man, a 2nd
Lieutenant who came out of nowhere and had to depart
his plane before it crashed and yet still had the strength
and foresight to defend his right and yours to live as an
American and free.
Freedom is not free.
Lt. Gen Harold Moore while addressing his men in
“Nam:
1. Three strikes and you’re not out. War is a battle of wills.
And the battle isn’t over until you stop fighting. Life kind
of works the same way.
2. There’s always one more thing you can do to influence
any situation in your favor, and after that, there’s one more
thing. Never give up, never surrender, and never stop
fighting. There are always options.
3. Trust your instincts. You’re worked hard, trained hard,
and studied hard. When all else fails, trust your gut. It’s
ready. Your subconscious knows and sees more than you
can, especially in the heat of battle. Trust it.
Lieutenant Owen Baggett did just that to the max and
more.
And so it goes.
