INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Students are increasingly utilizing social media, where Facebook, Instagram,

Twitter, and Snapchat are the leading platforms. These platforms offer unique

properties such as instant messaging, photo sharing and video content sharing, and

reputation tagging, among others, which keep the students engaged for exceptionally

long period of time. In such a scenario, many see the adoption levels among students

as contributing to their fail in their academic responsibilities.

According to studies, social media is highly associated with poor academic

performance among students. The need for distraction while in schools, classrooms,

and libraries increases the need for prolonged contact with peers and irrelevant

persons over the social network. This exposure causes frequent reminders and

notifications that reduce the student’s focus and actual operational time.

Moreover, social networks can negatively influence young people’s study routines

as well as their time management abilities. If social media is used excessively, it can

cause a student to procrastinate endlessly, leading him to prefer socializing with

friends and spending time on Facebook to working on his academic tasks. This, in

turn, may lead to ineffective time management and a lack of sound study plans.

Ultimately, his academic standing would be affected, and he may become a poor

performing student.

There are significant research studies that have found or suggested that social

media impacts academic performance, but more localized investigations on how

social media affects the academic performance of Grade 11 students in the Data

Center College of the Philippines Bangued are still in demand. A study of this kind

will help us understand the unique situations and problems that our students pass

through with regard to using social media and focus on their academic performance.

This study is specially beneficial to the educators and parents as well as the students

themselves.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

One significant issue was deciding between connection and causation. In looking

at how social media exposure affects one’s grades, trying to show some cause and

effect relationship turned out to be hard because of several other factors not taken into

statement. Students’ academic success may be influenced by their personal

motivation, individual study habits and external factors such as social media use and

other activities. The reason for whatever change in academic performance should not

be confined specifically to time spent on social media alone because there is a

possibility that such changes came due to personal motivation among other external

forces apart from social media. The findings of this research paper on Grade 11

students who study at Data Center college of the Philippines Bangued will have no

justification without solving this issue.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to Arnado, R., O., et al. (2023) most of the student used social media

for 5 hours and 85-89 has the commonly GPA of the respondent, students mainly used

social media for entertainment followed by academic, informativeness, and

socialization, there is no significant relationship between social media networking

sites usage and students’ academic performance, which conclude that social

networking sites usage and students’ academic performance does not correlate to each

other.

As stated by Abusama, H., P., et al. (2021) 80% of students used social media in

terms of doing research work, 90% in terms of doing assignment or project, and 80%

in terms of studying. Students’ time spent on social media is 1-6 hours, and academic

performance in terms of GPA is 90-93. It was also revealed that there is a significant

relationship between time spent on social media and academic performance in terms

of GPA and a significant relationship between usage of social media and academic

performance in terms of GPA.

Alsamarai, S., et al. (2019) stated that time waste, cause of distraction and reduced

command over language as the most responsible factors for social media to affect the

students’ academic performance. However, the research found no significance in the

variable of reduction in real human contract.

The data gathering of the study is divided into four stages. The first stage is to

formulate guide questions. The researchers formulated the guide questions and sought

the research adviser for the validation the said questions. For the second stage, the

researchers interviewed six (6) student of Data Center college of the Philippines

Bangued who served as the respondents of the said study. For the third stage, it will

be gathering the data on the said guide questions. The fourth and final stage will be

done by interpreting and analyzing the gathered data from respondents.

DISCUSSION

The results of the study conducted in Data Center college of the Philippines

Bangued has revealed some useful understandings about social media exposure and

academic performance relationships. The results suggest that there is a direct

connection between time spent on social media sites and academic success. In

particular, students showed Lack of Concentration in class if they were busy in

excessive use of social media to connect with their friends currently whereby the

study showed that these same individuals are likely to be out of focus. Additionally,

the study shows how social media can affect study habits, time management, and

general concentration in academic works.

In this research paper, we aim to find out how exposure in social media affects the

success of a student in school. Distraction in a particular social media platform,

concentration reduction and interrupted reading schedule have been identified as the

greatest contributors that make academic failures related with high usage levels within

the learning grounds. The study also indicated that there are certain actions which

students do on their social media profiles that correspond with lack of Concentration

involved students to limit their online use.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this study’s results indicate important issues raised concerning

responsible social media usage among the 11th graders studying at Data Center college

of the Philippines Bangued that could help them outstanding academically. The

results show that students need time management strategies by learning how to

develop effective studying habits while considering the amount of time set aside for

academic purposes by social network sites. Teachers and parents have critical parts in

guiding young people toward good digital practices and supporting the creation of a

learning space that minimizes the distractions brought in by social media.

We can take measures based on the results of this research in order to help eleven

graders use their social media in a way that ensures that we are able to do control is

exercised over it. Improved performance at school as well as general health can only

be achieved when they give more attention to reading while at the same time see to its

responsible use of social media. This research helps us learn more about how social

media affects academic results in a general sense. Furthermore, it is a basis for

upcoming research attempts in this important part.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In the light of discussion and conclusion, the researchers recommended the following:

1. Educate the grade 11 students in DCCP on how overusing social media

negatively/positively impacts academic performance.

2. Students should limit their social media use and make strategies that they can

use to control their use of social media and put their school work first.

3. Ask the parents to make a limit on the use of social media while studying

helps in minimizing distractions and improve the focus of students.

4. Parents should keep a close eye on their children’s use of social media

platform especially for senior high school students.
