*** ASSIGNMENT 3 ***

Instructions
1. Clearly show all necessary working and final answers on separate sheets of paper and attach
this question paper as cover page to the answer sheets. (3 marks)
2. Late submission of assignment will be penalized.
3. Write your full name and student ID Number on the answer sheet.

QUESTION 1 (2+2 =4marks)

(a). What is the frequency of an hour hand of a wall clock?

(b). A traveling wave travels with a velocity of 20 ms-1, and the distance from a crest to the nearest
trough is 20m. Determine the period of such a wave.

QUESTION 2 (3 + 3 +3 = 9marks)

(a). The velocity of a light wave in air refractive index 1.000 is approximately 3 x 10 8 ms-1. The light is
incident at an angle of 30 with respect to the normal on the surface of quartz whose refractive index
is 1.35. Calculate the angle of refraction of the refracted ray in the second medium using Snell Law.

(b). An Ultra sound instrument is used to measure the depth of a sea berth. And echo (reflection of
sound) is detected on the screen of the instrument 2 seconds later. The depth of the sea berth is
calculated to be 200m. Calculate the speed of sound in the sea water.

(c). Suppose a ship sends out a sound wave and receives that echo after one second. If the velocity of
sound in water is 1500m/s, how deep is the water?

QUESTION 3 (2+2+2+2+2=10 marks)

For the figure below, work out the missing angles a, b, c, d and e of the light ray.

QUESTION 4 (3+3+3+3 =12 marks)

A ray of light is incident on a rectangular block of glass of index of refraction 1.450 at an angle of 40
measured with respect to the normal as shown in the figure below. The thickness of the glass is 4 cm.

(a). Using Snell’s law, find the angle of refraction, .

(b). Find the distance (length) x.
(c). Find the amount d by which the ray is deviated.
(d). Determine the angle of deviation,.

QUESTION 5 (2+2+2+2+2+2=12 marks)

Two speakers are arranged so that sound waves with the same frequency are produced and radiated through
the room. An interference pattern is created is represented in the diagram as shown below. The thick lines in
the diagram represent wave crest and the thin lines represent wave troughs. The wave fronts are 4mm apart.

(a). Calculate the difference in distance (in) from point S1 and S2 from point D.
(b). Calculate the distance (in mm) between source S1 and S2.
(c). Assuming, the representation of the waves is 1 second after a vibrator was started; calculate the
speed of the waves.
(d). From the diagram, list all the points which are constructive interference points.
(e). From the diagram, list all the points which are destructive interference points.
(f). How many antinodes can be found from the labelled points in the above diagram?
