Write the independent, dependent and control variables for each problem, as well as a

hypothesis for each problem below,

1. One tank of goldfish is fed the normal amount of food once a day. A second tank
is fed twice a day. A third tank is fed four times a day during a six week study.
The fish’s weight is recorded daily. All tanks were of the same size and shape.
Dependent variable: The fish weight
Independent variable: How many times the fish are fed a day
Constant variable: The tanks size and shape.
Hypothesis: If I increase how many times goldfish are fed during the day then the
fish weight will increase.

2. You want to test which size of soccer ball is easiest to juggle with your feet. You
test a size 3, size 4 and size 5 ball of the same brand. You count the seconds the
ball stays in the air for each of the trials. You allow yourself to use both of your
feet, knees, and head to juggle the ball. Size 4 is the most common size for
soccer leagues.
Dependent variable: How much time the ball jugles
Independent variable: Size of soccer ball
Constant variable: The brand of soccer ball
Hypothesis: If I increase the ball size then it will be easier to juggle the ball and it
will last longer.

3. Galileo rolled spherical objects down inclined planes with and without friction. He
measured time for different angles of inclination. Under normal conditions there is
rolling friction between the inclined surface and the rolling object.
Dependent variable: How much time the object lasts rolling
Independent variable: Angles of inclination
Constant variable: Spherical objects
Hypothesis: If I increase the angle of inclination then the spherical object will last
less time rolling down the incline.

Snell’s Law:

1. A ray of light is traveling through air at an angle of 30° to the normal. It passes
into water and its angle becomes half the value to the normal (15°). What is the
index of refraction of water? θair=1.00
2. A beam of light going through a medium with an index of refraction of 1.14 has
an angle of incidence of 48° with another medium. If the light wave crosses into a
medium with an index of refraction of 1.36, what is the angle of refraction?
3. Find the angle of refraction if a light beam enters water at an angle of
relative to the normal. nwater=1.33 and nair=1.

3. Predict the result of iron(III) chloride FeCl3 and barium hydroxide Ba(OH)2 and
balance the equation. Indicate the precipitate.
