• Diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ, và hành động này đã hoàn toàn kết
thúc.
Ví dụ: Anthony finished his homework an hour ago.
• Diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra nhiều lần trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: Michael and I dated for three years before breaking up.
• Diễn tả 1 hành động xen vào 1 hành động khác trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: While I was washing dishes, the phone rang.
• Sử dụng trong câu điều kiện loại 2.
