CHAPTER 5: THE CULTURAL CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY
1. This essay will require that you conduct an interview. You need to find a likely subject
(friend, classmate, roommate, etc.) and through the interview try to discover how your
interviewee came to be the person he or she is. You should try to determine the social or
individual features that the person considers most important in defining herself or himself
(and those features that the person thinks others use, if there is a difference), whatever rites of
passage that he or she thinks were significant for him or her, and the ways that the person
maintains his or her identity vis-à-vis others. You might also want to ask about instances of
conflict or misunderstanding that arose because of a disagreement about social identity, and
the outcome of that disagreement.
2. On a day-to-day basis, we all work very hard to convey to others what we want them to
think of us. In effect, we are managing our identities by such things as the clothes we wear,
the way we act, the gifts we give, and so on. Your task in this essay is to examine the way
that you go about managing your own identity. How, for example, do you convey your
gender role to others? How do you create and maintain links with people through gift-
giving? How do you communicate to people that they play some sort of special role in your
life? You might want to keep an “identity diary” for a few days, carefully noting the things
that you do to establish your place in society in the minds of others, as well as in your own
mind.
3. We learned in Chapter 5 that societies mark changes in identity in a variety of ways. One
of the most important transitions is from childhood to adulthood. In your essay, you are to
investigate the transition to adulthood in Canadian society. You may focus on girls becoming
women, or boys becoming men, or both. How is this transition marked in Canadian society
through changes in social, legal, and other rights? Are there particular rites of passage that
are common to the transition?
