Learning Objectives:

• Manifest deeper understanding of the


terms related to recreational activities;
• Identify the benefits of recreational
activities; and
• Participate and share relevant
experiences of recreational activities.
Overview
A review of current literature indicates that
people who participate in sports clubs and
organized recreational activities enjoy better
mental health, are more alert, and are more
resilient against the stresses of modern living.
Participation in recreational groups and
socially supported physical activity is shown
to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
Violent crime also decreases significantly
when participating in community activities
increases.
Recreation
• Latin word "recreare" to refresh
or restore.

• voluntarily chosen -restore ones


from heavy obligatory work.

• it is a natural expression of
human interest and the needs to
seek satisfaction during leisure.
Leisure
• Latin word "licere" to be
permitted freedom or
opportunity to do something of
value.
• Carlson et al. (1963) unobligated
hours available after caring for
employment or the activities
mandatory for self-maintenance.
Play
• an activity that is carried on within
leisure for purpose of pleasure,
satisfaction, and self-expression.

• done for rivalry, fulfillment, and


enjoyment.

• more of rivalry or competition


rather than recreation.
Play

• Therefore, play is a spontaneous


physical activity for children while

• recreation is a re-creative,
organized, relaxing activity for
adults
Recreation

• Anything that is stimulating and


rejuvenating for an individual.

• The idea behind these activities is


to expand the mind and body in a
positive and healthy way.
Concept and Importance of
Recreational Activities

• are designed components of


physical education.

make an individual balanced and
satisfied. These would also
enhance self-realization and
confidence.

1. Indoor Setting/Manmade Recreation

Three (3) Parts of a Day

1. Existence Time – the time we spend on our biological


needs (sleeping, eating, hygiene).

2. Subsistence Time – the time we spend for economic


purposes (studying, working, household chores).

3. Free Time – the time we spend on our wants (playing,


dancing, singing, doing physical activity, etc.).
Characteristics:

• it is an activity as opposed to idleness

• recreation occurs in leisure

• choice of activity is voluntary

• recreation provides enjoyment


Characteristics:

• satisfaction is immediate and


inherent in the activity.

• Recreation, at all best is re-creative

• Recreation should be wholesome,


constructive, and socially acceptable
Benefits of Recreation:

It relieves our
day-to-day
tension

It relaxes our Universal need

Recreation's purpose is not
to kill time, but to make
life, not to keep a person
occupied, but to keep them
refreshed; not to offer an
escape from life, but to
provide a discovery of life.
Assignment

In a minimum of 10 sentences and a maximum of 15, answer each of


the following reflective essays:

1. How does recreation help an individual in a holistic dimension?


2. What types of recreation have you already participated in? What
are the benefits you gained?
3. If you will have an opportunity to involve in just one type of
recreation, what would it be? What particular activity will you
join under your chosen recreation?
