Lesson 1
Putting Things Together
 Addition means putting things together.

There are 6 apples in a basket. Anna puts 4 more apples.

If we add all the apples together, we get

+ =

10 apples

We write it as 6 + 4 = 10.
6 and 4 are the addends.
10 is the sum.

Something extra!

In words: 4 more than 6 is 10

Or 6 plus 4 is 10.
Meaning: 4 added to 6 is equal to 10

Addition on the Number Line

When we jump forward, we get greater
number. It is the same as adding numbers on
the number line.
For example: 5 + 3 = ___
Jump up to 5. Take 3 steps forward. You
reach 7. So, 5 + 3 = 8. 5 plus 3 equals 8.

Math Focus
 Addition means the process of putting
things together.
MATHEMATICS LEVEL-1 Page 2

ADDITION BY COUNTING FORWARD

There are 8 fish in one basket and 4 fish in another basket. How many
fish has John aught in all?

To get the total number of fish, we add 8 and 4.

We can add 8 and 4 by counting forward.

Count after 8 9 10 11 12

So, 8 + 4 = 12.

Here are other examples.

So, 6 + 9 = 15

2. 8 + 3 = ___

8 9 10 11

So, 8 + 3 = 11.

Math Focus
 There are many one- digit addends that can be added to give the sums up
to 18.
 We can easily find the sum of two addends with sums up to 18 using the
counting forward method. First, think of the bigger number then count on
the steps specified by the smaller number.
 We can also use the number bond principle to add numbers easily.

Lesson 3
Mental Addition
Adding Out Order of 10

There are many special ways to add numbers. One of the easiest ways to do
that is called the mental addition. Let us study how 3 or more numbers are
added with sums of 10.

Mrs. Reyes family spent their weekend at a zoo. She told her children to
count the number of animals found in the zoo. The youngest child said, there
were 7 crocodiles, 8 giraffes, and 3 elephants. How many animals did the
youngest kid count?

To solve this problem, we will add.

MATHEMATICS LEVEL-1 Page 15

PENIEL LEARNING CENTER

When adding, we can check the combinations of 10, even if we have to add
the numbers without following the exact order of numbers. We can see that
numbers that add to 10 are the easiest and quickest to work with.

These are the combinations or pair of numbers that will give us the sum of
10.

1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 +7, 4 + 6, and 5 +5

Let us solve the problem using the given trick.

Example 1. Add: 7 + 8 + 3

Step 1. Look for pairs that will give us the sum of 10.

7 + 3 = 10. Then add 8.

Therefore, the sum is 18.

Example 2. Find the sum 6 + 9 + 1 + 4.

Step 1. Look at the numbers 6 and 4; they will give 10.

Step 2. Look at 9 and 1; they will also give the sum of 10.

Hence,

6 + 4 = 10.

9 + 1 = 10.

Think: 10 + 10 = 20

Therefore, the answer is 20.

Math Focus
It is easier to add 3 or more 1 – digit numbers if we first look

for the pair of numbers, which gives the sum of 10.
