DATE : 05 June 2004

SUBJECT : 49th WEEKLY TOOLBOX MEETING (LOADING & UNLOADING OF MATERIALS)

INSTRUCTOR : REY G. BARRACA

A. Objective :
To remind the workers why it’s very important that they should carefully follow established safety
procedures when transporting heavy objects/materials.

B. Introduction :
We handle heavy objects/materials everyday, and these objects/materials can be as hazardous as a
sharp tool or a toxic chemical in their ability to cause severe injury, as well as the worst case scenario
is losing the load.
Back strain is the most common injury resulting from improper material handling, and another hazard
to watch out for is sharp ends and edges from steel and plastic straps which may cause lacerations.

C. Safe lifting techniques to be observe when loading and unloading of materials to prevent injury :
1. Choose a handcart that is the right size and shape for the objects/materials that you are going to
carry.
2. Place the heaviest objects/materials on the bottom.
3. Position the load over the truck’s axles so that the truck, not the handles, carries the weight.
4. Secure bulky, irregular, or fragile items to the truck.

D. Safety tips as you begin to move the object/materials to avoid possible hazards:
1. Look where you’re going
2. Make sure that you cab see over the load
3. Move slowly and cautiously
4. Avoid walking backwards
5. Be especially alert to edges of platforms and docks
6. Watch out for objects on the floor or obstruction in the way
7. Avoid pedestrians and vehicles
8. Keep the load ahead of you when you go downhill

E. Safety tips and or precautions for using the rope and strapping to secure the load:
1. Make sure the rope is in good condition before using it, inspect and test it by pulling on it.
2. Keep the rope away from corrosives like acid and other chemicals
3. To avoid the sharp edges of strapping, use safety gloves
4. Cut off loose strap ends with cutters, not clawhammer or pry bars
5.Make sure the strapping is taut but not too tight around the objects/materials
6. Don’t lift by the strap unless it’s designed for that purpose
Remember:
If we take the time to follow the safety tips and or procedures, we can avoid some of the most
common and debilitating accidents!!!!
