The Delhi High Court has ordered all pol-
ice stations in the Capital not to wait for
24 hours to initiate investigation into cas-
es regarding missing children. The inqui-
ry should begin as soon as a complaint is
received, the court directed the Delhi
Police Commissioner in its July 9 order.
“There is no scope for any speculation
or conjecture that the child may return
home in 24 hours and hence the police
can wait. In fact, the first 24-hour period
is the crucial period when steps for trac-

to a positive outcome,” the court said
while hearing a plea filed by a city resi-

Ashwani Mahajan, eco-

convener of the SJM, who
attended the June 20 meet-

economic measures were
needed to cope with the
human cost of AI. “We are
not against the adoption of
cutting-edge technology in-
cluding AI, but it is a fact
that in the short run, this
will lead to loss of employ-
ment among certain sec-
tions of employees, and a
‘robot tax’, as it’s being
termed, can be used for
creating a fund that would
help these workers upskill
and adapt to new technol-
ogies,” he said.

On job creation
Apart from the ‘robot tax’,
some concerns raised dur-
ing the Lok Sabha poll
campaign are also reflect-
ed in the SJM’s wishlist.
With unemployment being
a major theme during the
campaign, the SJM has sug-
gested that industries be
incentivised to create more
jobs through tax measures.
With regard to food in-
flation, it proposed that
small farmers be given sub-
sidies for micro-irrigation
projects that they can start
on their lands to increase
productivity.
On the issue of housing
for all, the SJM suggested
that a wealth tax be im-
posed on those holding
“vacant land”, in order to
“discourage unnecessary
land holding on the pretext
of future requirements”.
