Grammar: Adverbs of Time and Prepositions

Common Adverbs of Time

 Now: at this moment


o Example: She is studying now.
 Yesterday: the day before today'
o Example: He went to the park yesterday.
 Tomorrow: the day after today
o Example: They will travel tomorrow.
 Today: this day
o Example: I have a meeting today.
 Later: after some time
o Example: We will go shopping later.
 Soon: in a short time
o Example: She will arrive soon.
 Always: at all times
o Example: He always drinks coffee in the morning.
 Never: at no time
o Example: I have never been to Japan.
 Often: frequently
o Example: They often play tennis on weekends.
 Sometimes: occasionally
o Example: We sometimes eat out.

Prepositions of Time: "in," "on," "at"

 In: used for months, years, centuries, and long periods


o Example:
 In April, in 2023, in the 21st century
 On: used for days and dates
o Example:
 On Monday, on July 4th, on my birthday
 At: used for precise times and some expressions
o Example:
 At 3 PM, at noon, at night

Usage Examples

 I was born in 2000.


 The party is on Friday.
 We have a meeting at 9 AM.

Reading: A Busy Schedule

Read the following text and underline the adverbs of time and prepositions of
time.

This week has been very busy for Jane. Yesterday, she had a meeting with her
boss at 9 AM. She worked on her project all day. Today, she has another
meeting in the morning. Jane will visit her friend later. Tomorrow, she plans to go
shopping in the afternoon. She always buys groceries on Saturdays. Jane often
goes for a walk in the evening, but she will rest today. She hopes to finish her
work soon so she can relax at home.

Instructions: Listen to the following recording and write down the adverbs of
time and prepositions of time you hear.

(Make sure to have an audio file recorded with the following script)

"Good morning! Let me tell you about my daily routine. Every morning, I wake
up at 6 AM. I usually eat breakfast at 7 AM. Yesterday, I had pancakes. I go to
work at 8 AM. Today, I have a meeting at 10 AM. I often have lunch at 1 PM.
Later, I will go to the gym. Tomorrow, I plan to visit my parents in the afternoon. I
always read a book before bed. I hope to finish my book soon."

Conversation: Planning the Week

Practice the following dialogue with a partner.

 Student B: I have a class later. How about you?
 Student A: I have a meeting tomorrow. Do you always have class on Fridays?
 Student B: No, I sometimes have class on Fridays. What did you do yesterday?
 Student A: I visited my grandparents. I often visit them in the afternoon on Thursdays.

Speaking: Discussing Your Schedule

Instructions: In pairs, discuss your daily and weekly schedules. Use adverbs of
time and prepositions of time.

Example:

 A: I always wake up at 6 AM. How about you?


 B: I usually wake up at 7 AM. What are you doing tomorrow?
 A: I have a doctor's appointment in the afternoon.
