CHAPTER TWO

2.0 TASK 2: LAMINATING OF FIBERGLASS

Laminating: Laminating involves bonding multiple layers of materials

together using an adhesive or resin. The layers, also known as lamina, can be

made from different materials such as fabrics, composites, or core materials

like foam or balsa wood. The laminating process results in a stronger and

more durable material with enhanced structural properties. Laminating is

used in industries such as construction, automotive, aerospace, and marine to

produce components like hulls, decks, and structural panels.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass is a composite material made from extremely fine

glass fibers combined with a resin, typically epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester.

The resin is applied to the glass fibers, and the mixture is then cured to

create a strong, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant material. Fiberglass is

widely used in boatbuilding, automotive, aerospace, and industrial

applications due to its strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and ease of

shaping.

In summary, laminating and fiberglass processes offer manufacturers a way

to create high-performance materials for various industries by combining

multiple layers of materials or using glass fibers with resin. These processes

13
result in strong, lightweight, and versatile components for applications such

as automotive parts, boat hulls, and aerospace structures.

2.1 METHOD

 Prepare the mold or surface: Make sure the surface you are working

on is clean and free of any debris or contaminants. If you're using a

mold, apply a release agent to ensure the laminate doesn't stick.

 Cut the fiberglass cloth: Lay out the fiberglass cloth and cut it to the

desired shape and size, leaving an extra inch or two on each side to

allow for overlap.

 Mix the resin and hardener: Follow the manufacturer's instructions

for mixing the resin and hardener. Be sure to measure and mix

accurately to ensure proper curing. If using polyester or vinyl ester

resin, add the appropriate catalyst.

 Wet out the fiberglass cloth: Pour a small amount of mixed resin

onto the fiberglass cloth and spread it evenly using a brush or roller.

Make sure to saturate the cloth but avoid excessive resin buildup.

 Apply additional layers: If desired, add more layers of fiberglass

cloth to create a stronger laminate. Apply resin between each layer

and ensure proper alignment and overlap.

14
 Remove air bubbles: Use a roller or brush to gently work out any

trapped air bubbles between the layers.

 Allow for curing: Leave the laminate to cure according to the resin

manufacturer's recommendations. This may take several hours or

overnight, depending on the resin type and ambient temperature.

 Trim and sand: Once the laminate is cured, trim any excess material

using a utility knife or scissors, and then sand the edges for a smooth

finish.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 the use of Lathe machine

lathe machine is a versatile and widely used machine tool that rotates a

workpiece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, drilling,

sanding, and knurling. The primary function of a lathe is to remove material

from the workpiece to achieve the desired shape and size.

16
3.2 METHOD

 Safety First: Put on appropriate personal protective equipment, such

as safety goggles, gloves, and ear protection. Ensure the work area is

clean and free of any obstacles.

 Prepare the Workpiece: Select the appropriate workpiece material

and size for your project. Ensure that the workpiece is securely

mounted on the lathe using the appropriate chuck, collet, or faceplate.

 Choose the Right Tools: Determine the type of cutting tools needed

for the desired operation, such as turning, facing, or threading. Ensure

the tools are sharp, clean, and properly secured in the toolpost.

 Set the Machine Speed: Adjust the spindle speed according to the

workpiece material and the desired operation. Consult the machine

manual or a reference guide for recommended speeds.

 Perform Facing: To create a flat surface on the end or face of the

workpiece, move the cutting tool perpendicular to the workpiece axis

using the cross-slide and carriage handwheels.

 Perform Turning: To reduce the diameter or create a cylindrical

shape, move the cutting tool parallel to the workpiece axis using the

carriage handwheel, ensuring a consistent depth of cut.

17
 Perform Drilling: To create a hole in the center or offset from the

center of a cylindrical workpiece, mount a drill bit in the tailstock and

feed it into the rotating workpiece using the tailstock handwheel.

 Perform Boring: To enlarge an existing hole or create an internal

cylindrical shape, mount a boring bar with a cutting tool in the

toolpost and feed it into the hole using the cross-slide and carriage

handwheels.

 Perform Threading: To cut external or internal threads, mount a

threading tool with the desired profile in the toolpost. Set the lathe to a

slow speed and engage the half-nut to advance the tool along the

workpiece at the appropriate pitch.

 Perform Knurling: To create a grip-enhancing pattern on the

workpiece surface, press a knurling tool with the desired pattern

against the rotating workpiece.

 Parting-off: To separate the workpiece into two or more pieces,

mount a parting tool in the toolpost and feed it perpendicular to the

workpiece axis until it cuts through.

 Clean Up: After completing the desired operations, turn off the lathe,

remove the workpiece, and clean up any debris or coolant on the

machine and surrounding area.
