PRACTICAL 5 (4.5 hours)

WORK :
TITLE: SINGLE-PHASE INVERTER

CLO 2: Construct converters circuits and make observation on displayed waveforms using
appropriate methods and equipments. (P4,PLO5)
EQUIPMENT: 1. MATLAB
2. SIMULINK
3. Notebook

SAFETY At the end of the session, students will be able to:-

PRECAUTION: i. Create the circuit of single-phase half bridge inverter and single-phase bridge
inverter using a MATLAB simulink. ii. Explain the operation of single-
phase half bridge inverter and single-phase bridge inverter. iii.
Determine the voltage output (Vo) waveform. iv. Measure and calculate
the output voltage (Vo).

THEORY: DC-to-AC converters are known as inverters. The function of an inverter is to

change a dc input voltage to a symmetrical ac output voltage of desired
magnitude and frequency. The output voltage could be fixed or variable at
a fixed or variable frequency. Each type can be use controlled turn on and
turn off devices implement by using a BJTs, MOSFETs, IGBTs, MCTs,
GTOs and SCRs.

A. Single-phase Half Bridge Inverter

The principle of single-phase half bridge inverters can be explained

with Figure 1(a). The inverter circuit consists of two choppers. When only
S1 is turned on for a time T/2, the instantaneous voltage across the load vO
is VS/2. If thyristor S2 only is turned on for a time T/2, −VS/2 appears
across the load. The waveform for the output voltage is shown in Figure 1
(b).

The RMS voltage output; Vo = Vs / 2

B. Single-phase Bridge Inverter

A single-phase bridge inverter is shown in Figure 2 (a). It consists of

four
choppers. When thyristors S1 and S2 are turned on simultaneously, the
input voltage VS appears across the load. If thyristors S3 and S4 are turned
on at the same time, the voltage across the load is reversed and is −VS.
The waveform for the output voltage is shown in Figure 2 (b).

The rms output voltage; Vo = Vs

Note. The peak reverse blocking voltage of each transistor and the quality
of output for half-bridge and full-bridge inverters are the same. However, for
full-bridge inverters, the output is four times higher and the fundamental
component is twice that of half-bridge inverters.

1. Open MATLAB and type Simulink in the MATLAB command

command window or click on the
Simulink button located on the MATLAB toolbar.

2. A new window should open and this window is the Simulink Model Library. Click File
> New > Model > Untitle workspace > File > Save > name your file.

3. On the model sheet, create and complete the single phase half bridge inverter
schematic circuit as shown in Figure 3.
4. Find the components below in the Simulink Library Browser. Double-click
components and set the following parameters:
